July 26, 2013 - I've stopped with the points, but I would give this as high or nearly as high a rating as I did before. I expected it would need a little time to open up, so I popped it 1/2 an hour before our guests arrived. By the time we started dinner, we were nearly running out. Nick and Margaret both exclaimed, "Wow!" upon sipping. Nose was a little weak to start, but gained depth, with same aromas noted a year ago. Entry was silky smooth, luscious without overextraction. Although Roar uses a fair bit of new oak, the touch is light, adding just a hint of weight and sweetness. The umami has never really developed, but there's a nice, subdued layer of minerality.

May 27, 2013 - This was an alcoholic fruit bomb that had zero structure. Big mid palate with a red fruit liquor profile going on and very hot on the finish. I think it's time to start stocking up on Oregon Pinots.....

March 30, 2012 - 92 might be a tad generous. Or it might not. What's a point to a wine like this? As the "appellation" bottling for Roar, one of my favorite Pinot producers, I don't expect it to wow me quite like the SVDs. But of course those involve blending from very distinct blocks, too. I decided to make Friday rotisserie chicken a little special this week, and, as the appellation wine, I thought this would be ready a little earlier. Not wrong. Luscious without being overbearing or tarted up, subtle without losing impact. Aromas of baking spices, a little sandalwood, dried cherries, a hint of pomegranate, dark soil; flavors unfolded very slowly, with riper but not cloying cherries, a bit of rock, a little hint of future mushroominess. At 14/9% ABV, not even a bit hot. Food friendly with enough acid, but I was deep into the bottle before I had dinner ready. Going to wait a little while to drink the next one, but it's spot on now and I don't think it'll get a lot better, just different.

June 17, 2011 - Fragrant nose, cherry and earth on palate. Long finish. Still tannic and might be still better in a few years. Paired nicely with Wendy's sautéed duck.
