December 3, 2018 - Keller Abtserde Study (plus a few more): Served double-blindish (capsule was exposed to reveal VDP logo) in a Zalto universal. Root / 1024 hPa.
Color is a rusty ruby with a deeper core. Slightly bricking at the rim. The nose here is a little confounding at first. Initially was unsure if there was some brett here or an intense sulfur reduction. Ultimately, this turned out to be mostly reduction as it blew off after 20 minutes or so. Nose is bright with cherry pie and pomegranate juice, but becomes muddle by a distinct oak presence that shows more as wood than baking spice. The palate here is incredibly lean with more of the tart cherry and pomegranate from the nose, with a touch of sous bois as well. More oak. Incredibly tart acidity as well, I was surprised to see so much tannin which led me to place this wine as significantly younger. As a whole, an interesting wine that shows a lot of potential from the region as things continue to warm up and as wine making techniques move away from such overt oak use. -

December 3, 2018 - Abts E® study (Chicago, IL): #41-09, 14% abv. (Note that the label doesn't denote the 'S' -- this is the basic, QbA Spätburgunder, which doesn't seem to have a listing on CT.) Served double blind, though the bottle shape and the VDP eagle on the capsule made it clear this was Germany. Touch of reduction, as well as some weird natural wine smells on the nose. Perhaps a touch dirty, and a bit of oak here as well. The palate is surprisingly lean, mean, and green, with plenty of bitter and astringent tannins. Somehow it occurred to no one to guess Keller on this.

September 4, 2016 - Much better than expected. Could be 93 in a few years. Light red colour, cherry and rose petal nose, surprisingly strong and bold on the palate, again cherry notes and a little bit blueberry. Long finish of almost 50 seconds. Next one next year.

May 14, 2016 - HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/13/2016-5/14/2016 (Chicago, IL): Very nice and light nose, with pretty tart red fruit as well as a beautiful floral lift. The palate though is a bit abbreviated, and shows mostly the tartness of the fruit. There are some dried herbs on the palate, as well as a nice touch of minerality. Perhaps tilting a bit acidic, this is still a very nice expression of pinot.

March 31, 2013 - A private lunch (Restaurant Vendôme ***, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany): Excellent core of ripe fruit, cream; rosehip and undergrowth indicate some development, nice spicy warmth from the oak; lovely sweetness in the attack, refreshing but silky and elegant, nice weight, much softer and with less minerality than an equivalent Burgundy would have but very charming and balanced; very good length.
