2020 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée ChaupinGrenache more |
4/13/2024 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThis really packs a punch. It's tightly wound, spicy and powerful. It will be interesting to see how it matures over time. Its alcohol content of 15.5% is not noticeable from taste but does fatigue the palate over time. The 2020 doesn't possess the elegance that I associate with Janasse Chaupin, but I have a strange feeling that it may surprise us over time. I'm letting the rest of my bottles rest for at least another five years. |

2012 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Auguste FavierRed Rhone Blend more |
11/1/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRFrankly, this is very 2012, but in a good way. Expressive and autumnal on the nose with depths of dried black cherries, cloves, allspice and hints of split pine, all lifted by mentholated herbs. It's silky, nearly fleshy in feel, with ultra-ripe strawberry and blueberry compote balanced by zesty acidity under an air of violet pastile. A bit of heat pokes out, yet I find it forgivable, as the 2012 finishes remarkably fresh yet long, leaving salted licorice and hints of balsamic spice to fade slowly. I don't see this getting any better with time. Drink up. |

2020 00 Wines Clos de la RocheClos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
9/29/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThe 2020 Clos de la Roche is youthfully understated, with a nuanced blend of cinnamon sticks and rosehips. Soothingly round and pure in style, this boasts masses of tart red berry fruits complicated by savory herbs, all offset by a twang of sour citrus. It finishes long and staining but only lightly structured, leaving a cheek-puckering concentration and hints of licorice. |

2020 00 Wines Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des VergelessesPinot Noir more |
9/29/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThe 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Ile des Vergelesses is remarkably pretty and perfumed with vivid strawberries complicated by savory herbs. It’s round and lifted in style with crunchy red berry fruits and a subtle mineral staining that slowly builds. The 2020 is long and potent, with a gentle tug of fine tannins and a licorice tinge that slowly fades. Already a pleasure to taste, this should be even better in two to three years time. |

2014 Carlisle Petite Sirah Palisades VineyardNapa Valley more |
9/19/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThis is a pleasure bomb yet harmonious from start to finish. The 2014 Petite Sirah from Palisades Vineyard wafts up with an intense yet utterly seductive bouquet of blueberry compote, violet pastille, cool mint and a dusting of cocoa. Powerful and large-scaled yet immaculately balanced, this impresses further with its racy and mouthwatering personality, guided by zesty acidity that enlivens the tart wild berry fruits and sour citrus tones that tease the palate with cheek-picking tension. These tannins are perfectly formed, round and sweet, as the 2014 drinks beautifully already, yet in no fear of decline with a long and potent finale featuring raspberry preserves, sage and dark chocolate. |

2016 Peter Lauer Kupp Riesling Faß 18 Großes GewächsMosel Saar Ruwer more |
9/15/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThis is a total mineral and acid bomb. Masses of slate and limestone, cooling smoke, lime zest, chlorophyll, sage and Granny Smith apple keep the 2016 Kupp Riesling Faß 18 Großes Gewächs is a total seductress to this Reisling lover. It blends mineral and acid tension with ripe green melon and penetrating citrus over a dense wave of oily textures, and yet this remains perfectly fresh and lively throughout. If you can call it a finish, the finish is remarkably fresh with a liquid stone quality with nuances of mint, sage, and kiwi throughout, as the mouth is left thirsting for more. The 2016 is incredible today, but this wine still has years of evolution in store for patient collectors. Check in now only if you have multiple bottles. 4 people found this helpful, do you? 2022 Huia Sauvignon BlancMarlborough more |
9/8/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRA bit subtle yet crisp and refreshing, the 2022 Huia Sauvignon Blanc excels with its green apple, lime and sweet smoke profile. I might not pick it out as New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc blind, but I also wouldn't pass up on a refill. |

2020 Podere Prospero Bolgheri RossoSuperTuscan Blend more |
8/30/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRMint leaf and pine give way to red currants and sweet smoke as the cool-toned 2020 Podere Prospero Bolgheri Rosso evolves in the glass. Soft yet focused, this possesses brilliant acidity and tart wild berry fruits that are expertly framed by hints of sour citrus as subtle grippy tannins emerge toward the close. It's structured yet fresh, tapering off with a savory herbal tinge as the cheeks pucker with youthful tension. It was very nice tonight but likely better in three to five years. |

2022 Saint Clair Family Estate Sauvignon Blanc Dillons PointMarlborough more |
8/27/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThis is a bit muted on the nose yet very pretty with gooseberry, mint and sweet peas. A vivid burst of grapefruit juice splashes across the palate, tongue-curling lemon rind, and a hint of savory herbs, all nicely motivated by juicy acidity. This tapers off potent with intense citrus concentration, remarkably fresh, yet full of cheek-puckering tension. At this price, I'd certainly buy again, yet maybe a smaller glass is in order (tasted in Zalto Bordeaux) |

2017 Kelley Fox Wines Pinot Noir Maresh VineyardDundee Hills more |
8/22/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRA stoney mix of crushed rocks, chalk, and white smoke opens the stage for dried strawberries and minty herbs through its seductive bouquet. Rich yet pliant and juicy, this excels with its zesty acidity and fleshy wild berry fruits. A caking of minerality mingles with edgy tannins, the only sign of a warm year, as the 2017 finishes remarkably fresh yet potent and long with a bump of sour citrus that carries it home. What a gorgeous wine! Drinking beautifully now but with many years of positive development. |

2021 Babich Sauvignon Blanc Marlboroughmore |
8/20/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRA great QPR, with a stereotypical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc nose of intense grapefruit, lemon rinds, wild herbs and wet stone. This balances richness with zesty acidity and sweet fruit in a way that seduces the senses. It finishes fresh and clean, puckering the cheeks with a citrusy concentration that lingers on. Frankly, I'm at least in for another six bottles at this price point. It's a crowd-pleaser. |

2022 Te Mata Estate Sauvignon BlancHawke's Bay more |
8/20/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRText-book New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 Te Mata delivers pungent grapefruit and herbs without becoming candied or phenolic. Silky and energetic, with a salty mineral core and ripe citrus fruit to balance, this is a total pleasure on the palate. It leaves a cheek-puckering twang that keeps the taster looking back to the glass, finishing fresh, vibrant and cooling the senses. I wouldn't rush out for another bottle, but I would know that this would put a smile on the faces of just about everyone at a summer BBQ. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 2022 Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon BlancMarlborough more |
8/20/2023 - Eric Guido Does not like this wine: NRI didn't have as good of an experience as other tasters here, as my 2022 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc came across as lacking energy and with an unsavory richness that left me with a feeling that the wine was disjointed. Typical Sauv Blanc aromatics yet lacking vibrancy. Ultimately, only half of the bottle was drunk, and the rest lingered in the fridge for days. I have another bottle that will hopefully redeem the Dog Point, but I'm hesitant to open it. |

2022 Loveblock Vintners Ltd Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valleymore |
8/20/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThe 2022 Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc is delicate and refined, demanding a smaller bulbed glass, as I typically like larger glasses, but that takes away from the nuanced aromas here. Lemon zesty, kiwi and a spritz of grapefruit combine with hints of sweet spice. It's soft textured, with suggestions of liquid stone or slate giving way to sour melon. This leaves a citrusy concentration while leaving the palate perfectly reset for another sip. Well done, but look elsewhere if you want a big and spicy New Zealand Sauv Blanc. |

8/2/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRNuanced and delicate nose with ripe pit fruits and sweet florals. Opulent and rich on that palate with a great acid and saline balance. The 2020 tapers off with hints of vanilla bean and ripe nectarine. Very nice. |

2018 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-MontrachetChardonnay more |
7/30/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRI loved this wine at half the current rate. Now. It's simply a solid-performing white Burgundy that has become far overpriced. |

2017 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-MontrachetChardonnay more |
6/28/2023 - Eric Guido wrote: NRI was hoping for much more complexity, acidity and minerality. In the end, at the price point, this was a letdown. Sorry to say, but I'm thinking it's more of a vintage thing than producer. |

2013 Tiberio Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Fonte Canalemore |
6/13/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThe 2013 Fonte Canale has really come to life since my last experience with it in 2020. Today, this is smoky and mineral intense with crushed oyster shells, caraway and lemon oils contrasting young peach, mango and dusty florals. Its textures are soft, yet the impact is enormous, as stimulating acidity and tart orchard fruits assault the senses, evolving into an almost salt-and-white pepper savoriness. Perfectly refined and crisply refreshing, like liquid limestone. At ten years old, the 2013 still comes across as a teenager, with edgy elbows and knees, yet luminescent and wildly attractive. It's incredible that this was only her second commercial release of Fonte Canale. Magic juice, and with many years of evolution in store!!! |

2018 Domaine des Tours Vaucluse ClairetteClairette Blanche more |
5/8/2023 - Eric Guido wrote: NRSitting in a Zalto Bordeaux glass, with lots of air--the 2018 Reserve is simply stunning. It's delicate on the nose and makes you work hard, but once you do, Wow. Chamomile, crushed apples, mint leaf, wet stone, and sweet smoke seduce the senses. Stunning acidity, riveting minerality, and perfectly ripe stone fruits inform its juicy performance on the palate. the 2018 cleans up beautifully, crisp and refreshing, yet potent and almost chewy. What a presence!!! it's both sweetly satisfying yet full of energy and tension. |

2006 Luca Roagna / Nero di Wongraven Barolo UnioneNebbiolo more |
3/1/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRThe 2006 resonates in the glass with a blend of tobacco, black cherries and spice. This is soft textured with textbook Roagna acidity and gripping minerality. It finishes medium in length with nuances of licorice and citrus that linger. More depth would be preferred, but just looking at this label is so much fun. |

2018 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Rocche dell'AnnunziataNebbiolo more |
2/4/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRLa Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata was a highlight of my recent flight of 2018s, lifting from the glass with vivid black cherries complemented by autumnal spices and hints of shaved cedar. This is lifted and juicy in feel, with bright red berries and crisp acidity that adds energy throughout as rosy inner florals form toward the close. Nuances of licorice and balsam herbs linger through the long and lightly structured finale. This is a remarkably pretty expression of Rocche dell’Annunziata, which is refined for three years in large casks. |

2018 Elio Altare Barolo UnoperunoNebbiolo more |
2/4/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRLa Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Unoperuno is dusty and floral in the glass, mixing dried strawberries with roses and sweet smoke. This flows across the palate like pure silk, cool-toned and incredibly fresh, with tart wild berry fruits and inner violet florals that cascade throughout. The 2018 finishes gracefully and hauntingly long with nuances of dried blueberry that linger on and on. The Unoperuno could use some cellaring to help its aromatics to blossom. Otherwise, it’s an incredibly charming wine. Unoperuno, a blend of Altare’s vineyards, translates to “one by one”; it’s a Barolo that is produced through hand sorting where each berry is destemmed by hand. What a beauty. |

2018 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto CampèNebbiolo more |
2/4/2023 - Eric Guido wrote: NRLa Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): Dark and moody in the glass, the 2018 Barolo Campe opens up with a blend of wild herbal tones and dried cherries. It’s softly textured, with masses of minerality up front contrasting a core of tarry blackberry and plum. This finishes with a hulking structure, a bit dried out and long, with grippy tannins that saturate as hints of black licorice slowly fade. |

2018 Luciano Sandrone Barolo AlesteNebbiolo more |
2/4/2023 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NRLa Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Aleste wafts up with a darkly alluring bouquet of crushed black currants offset by lifting hints of cedar and mint. This is a soft-textured yet cool-toned effort, with tart wild berry fruits motivated by brisk acidity. It finishes grippy and full of tension with a reverberation of raspberry under an air of inner rose. |
