This really packs a punch. It's tightly wound, spicy and powerful. It will be interesting to see how it matures over time. Its alcohol content of 15.5% is not noticeable from taste but does fatigue the palate over time. The 2020 doesn't possess the elegance that I associate with Janasse Chaupin, but I have a strange feeling that it may surprise us over time. I'm letting the rest of my bottles rest for at least another five years.

Frankly, this is very 2012, but in a good way. Expressive and autumnal on the nose with depths of dried black cherries, cloves, allspice and hints of split pine, all lifted by mentholated herbs. It's silky, nearly fleshy in feel, with ultra-ripe strawberry and blueberry compote balanced by zesty acidity under an air of violet pastile. A bit of heat pokes out, yet I find it forgivable, as the 2012 finishes remarkably fresh yet long, leaving salted licorice and hints of balsamic spice to fade slowly. I don't see this getting any better with time. Drink up.

The 2020 Clos de la Roche is youthfully understated, with a nuanced blend of cinnamon sticks and rosehips. Soothingly round and pure in style, this boasts masses of tart red berry fruits complicated by savory herbs, all offset by a twang of sour citrus. It finishes long and staining but only lightly structured, leaving a cheek-puckering concentration and hints of licorice.

1/24/2020 5:31:00 AM - Just got word from Vinous about the appointment to the Editor's post. Congratulations! Look forward to your reviews, particularly on the Brunelli.
1/23/2020 10:45:00 AM - Have loved reading your notes here and at Morrell since I got Cellar Tracker and now can't wait to read your notes at VM! Congrats!
9/26/2019 6:06:00 PM - Hey E, 10/28/19 tasting event in Florham Pk NJ put on by Gary's Wine...kind of ridiculous, like a kid in candy store each year can only try 30 out of hundreds of wines, extremely well put together event and all goes to charity.
6/19/2019 6:41:00 PM - Hi Eric, I've seen that you've had the opportunity to try some KMV wines from the North Fork of LI. I've never seen those around to try or purchase, but I'd love the opportunity to sample some of their wines. Is there any way you can point me in the right direction? I'm out on the North Fork several times a year. Thank you!
1/12/2015 8:36:00 AM - Hi Erik! This is Luis from Spain, a new member of Cellar Tracker. Are you a Rioja Wine lover? If you feel like it, I could send you some samples of Marques del Puerto Gran Reserva 2004, recently rated with a 92 by WE, how is that sounds? For the sake of clarity I am an Export Manager working for this winery (and a wine lover!!!). My email is l.guemes@mbrizard.com
11/16/2014 12:22:00 PM - @jerwin1943, thanks for the heads up. We hope to head up there again in the last spring of 2015 and I'll seek this spot out. Thanks!
11/2/2014 5:53:00 AM - Eric- a year or so ago you contacted me for Vermont restaurant recommendations near Woodstock. We just came back from a few days in the area and I would strongly recommend Osteria Pane e Salute http://www.osteriapaneesalute.com/
They measure up very well with the better dining establishments we experienced in Tuscany and Sicily.
Congrats on your new association with Morrell.
9/3/2013 10:11:00 AM - Hi Eric
Thanks for your comment about the Barolo. Your observation about how they can "sleep" for a decade is fascinating. I'll try to find some older ones to test that theory.
8/12/2013 6:45:00 PM - Eric; I was on the fence about buying 2005 Tenute Dettori until I read your review. Your tasting notes were quite helpful. Only one that let it breathe for so long. People do not realize how much time some wines need in order to open. Thank you
1/27/2013 5:05:00 PM - Eric - I saw that you posted in the past months on the WineTalk forum, interested in Oregon pinots. I enjoy your comments on Baroli! If you come out to Oregon, a great hotel to consider is the Allison Inn, in Newberg, right in the heart of the wine growing area. A major plus is the fabulous restaurant at the hotel - Jory. The chef there spent some time at El Bulli, and the sommeliers - Tom and Ken have great suggestions. Best part about it is that you can retire to your room and not worry about driving. As for Portland wine shops, you might like Vinopolis and E&R Wine Shop, as well as Eric @ Sec Wines. - Chaz
7/8/2012 1:18:00 PM - Eric-I noticed your comment on my TN of the 2008 Chidaine Les Tuffeaux. We would be delighted to have you and your wife stop for lunch the next time you are visiting VT. We are only 10 minutes off I91 exit 1. I am sure we can find something very interesting to open.
7/31/2011 1:49:00 PM - I don't have tasting notes written because I tasted them at a standing tasting but the 2009 Elio Grasso, Dolcetto d'Alba dei Grassi and 2009 Guido Porro Dolcetto were serious standouts for 2009.
7/24/2011 12:40:00 PM - Hi Eric-I am looking for a summer everyday red to go with lighter pasta dishes with marinara sauce. I'm considering a case of the 2009 Cavallotto Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot and read your TN. Any other Dolcetto that you would recommend over this?
Jim
