  • 2001 Château Lynch-Moussas

Drinking amazingly well. Aromas of plum, violet blackcurrant and tobacco blossom out of the glass. Flavors are textbook elegant, aged Bordeaux, with abundant fruit (red morphing to black plum), tobacco, some light library/leather sofa development, and some largely integrated oak. Juicy acidity, resolved tannins and maybe just a hint of horse saddle. Maybe more Margaux than Pauillac if one were guessing. Enough body to carry through a satisfying finish, but svelte by today’s standards. Terrific value, as I paid $42 a couple years ago.

  • 2015 Ferraton Père & Fils Cornas Les Grands Muriers

Was hoping for a wild and unhinged Cornas, and while there’s definitely some good feral gaminess, there’s also a slick of wood gloss that dampens the enjoyment. Dark black fruits, game and pepper, licorice and some espresso notes. Definitely broader in scale than the Desire Lines Shake Ridge served alongside, and definitely shows the warm year.

  • 2019 Desire Lines Syrah Shake Ridge

Already drinking well (with a 3 hour decant) at this young stage. Elegant florals and red fruit on the nose, very civilized. Tangy red cherry and pomegranate fruit, perfectly ripe and suffused with dusty, chalky minerals that reminds me of Bedrock, but with a more slender frame. Tons of depth. Not a huge amount of herbaceousness, and only a little bit iron inflected. Finish is long, clean, and with a subtle build up of chalky tannins. Not for those who want massive wildness in their Syrah but a really approachable and refined style.
