95 Points

Sunday, April 5, 2020 - Another stunner from probably the best vintage ever. It has all the traits of this fine vintage: the pure blue and black fruit, the superb freshness and a great balance. Points deducted as it showed some hints of alcohol at times on the nose and as it is quite bold (more so than a bottle a year ago). But overall great to drink and an even greater promise. Ranks almost on par with the Clos St. Jean Deus Ex Machina (96 pts) and a tad behind the Barroche Pure (98 pts) and the Usseglio Deux Freres (97). Out of the 13 vintages of Clos des Papes I‘ve had so far, this is my clear #1.

On the nose ripe dark and blue fruit, some red fruit hints, crushed wet slate. Sweet and inviting with a hint of alcohol showing here and there but not disturbing too much. Sensational on the palate with lots of blue, black and red fruit, yes ripe but so fresh and pure. Some earthy and mineral aromas as well as spices also noticeable. Superb freshness, just a perfect acidity, mountains of fine tannins, superb length, good to very good complexity and very high precision.

TN: No decant needed in this early fruit phase.
