Monday, May 10, 2021 - The 2016 Carter Weitz is a lovely wine. This could have easily be a pop an pour experience, but I allowed the wine to breath for a couple of hours and that was beneficial. When I pop the cork there was thick purple saturation/ build-up on the cork… Good sign? In the glass intensely rich purple crimson color with an attractive violet/ floral bouquet. On the palate, dark ripe yet elegant berry fruit and good energy. Blue and blackberry fruit, dark cherry and cassis. This wine is full bodied with lovely extraction yet elegance and focus. This Weitz may be the best vintages yet from Carter Cellars and a few years in the bottle has benefit this wine. 96+ Points.

5/11/2021 8:45:00 PM - Nice review and couldn’t agree more Yack Man. I think I bought 2 bottles direct from the winery, and then after having it, subsequently bought 11 more on the secondary. This and the ‘15 are great, along with the QPR, but the ‘16 is just stellar.

6/1/2021 5:32:00 PM - FYI, I spoke with a boutique wine store owner over the weekend who did a barrel tasting review recently of the 2019 Carter cabs. Supposedly much better than the 2018 vintage (although the 2018 vintage needs time) - apparently more reminiscent of the 2016 vintage in regards to quality and youthful approachability

6/1/2021 5:47:00 PM - Thanks Badmonkey projection, We didn't make it up to Napa this weekend (too many tourist)n not to mention the wine was just bottled the middle of last week and bottle shock may have been an issue. We will probably visit in the middle of this month.

6/1/2021 7:49:00 PM - I haven’t had the most recent vintage of Maybach Materium (18) in light of the price point and I regret not buying at least a bottle. I’ve had previous vintages and it is clearly very high quality. However, in my opinion good vintages of the Weitz and Materium aren’t far off - although I would give the Materium an edge but it also my understanding that Maybach gets the prime blocks. The 16 Weitz was tremendous in my opinion and I’m betting the 19 vintage could be as good in light of what I’m hearing - at least I hope so.
