2014 Château Brane-Cantenac

Community Tasting Note

Does not like this wine:

Friday, February 23, 2024 - No sediment in the bottle, bright ruby color.

Bright violets, dark chocolate, cherries, and raspberries on the nose. Faint nose of mushroom to start, forest floor, then moss.

Long length of flavor, but not a very pleasant flavor. Tart under ripe cherry on the pallet. Medium tannins. slightly tart cherry, followed by leather, the ending is tart and the aftertaste tightens the pallet.

It got better and less tart after 90 minutes of decanting, but we finished the bottle so I cant tell you the flavor change after the first 90 minutes.

6/10 - wildly underwhelming for a second growth Bordeaux.

2/23/2024 6:35:00 PM - Sounds like bottle variation or a bad bottle.Your score is the lowest by far. Did you get the Lilac/Lavendar floral notes? I’ll try another soon.

2/24/2024 8:30:00 AM - 60points on the CT scale is damn near undrinkable. That right?

2/24/2024 9:05:00 AM - Everyone agrees that 100 pts is a perfect wine, but not one agrees what an entirely average wine should score. 50 pts. seems like an obvious choice, but Robert Parker said his scale began at 50 and in practice 87 seems like average for most people.

2/24/2024 10:23:00 AM - Using the CT FAQ an average wine is 75. Below 70 is "avoid". Based on the note above I would have expected a rating in the 80's. It would be quite a fiasco for a classified growth bdx to release a wine that would score in the 60's on the CT scale (which is adapted from RP). I would argue a score in the 80's from a 2nd growth is very disappointing.

I only posted because the note described an experience below expectations but a score that is generally not how the community scores wines

I would agree that I tend to rate "average" wines ~85.

2/24/2024 10:31:00 AM - I’ve had 2 bottles so far and I scored both 92 pts. A score of 60 is a severely flawed or terrible wine. This is not what I’ve experienced here. I’ll try another soon.
