Thursday, May 20, 2010 - What a wine! I have been exploring 2006 left bank recently and within the last month have had Lafite, Mouton, and Montrose. And now this. Trust me, it takes no back seat to the Firsts and, in fact, I thought there was more to the P-C/more potential too, than there was in the Lafite. For 1/10th the price! Clearly it was better than the Montrose and the only reason I would give Mouton a slight nod over it, was for that wine's remarkable level of fruit purity.... P-C pretty much matched the Power of Mouton, but the Mouton was just so pure. The P-C was revealing black fruits, earth/mineral/smoke. Serious tannin presence, yet the ripe fruit competed and made it, all in all, quite drinkable. The tannins on the finish were drier, yet the sweet fruit continued to linger long on the finish. I haven't cracked any of my 2005 yet, so for me this was the greatest Pontet-Canet I have ever had.
