This is the last of 8 bottles I bought in 2010 in a Carrefour supermarket discounted from 65,00 to 48,00€ (try finding a bottle of a recent vintage at this price!). My experiences were mixed: a few bottles tasted soon after purchase were hard as nails, and more impressive rather then really tasty. Following bottles seemed to soften a bit but remained very closed and unyielding. Fortunately this last bottle is the best of them all: a very impressive opaque color with little evolution, still slightly closed on the nose but with an authentic Pauillac bouquet strongly dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon (approx.62% with 32% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) with cassis, tobacco, graphite and underbrush and weighty on the palate with a lot of tannines and nice acidity. It still lacks charm and generosity, but this can be expected in this (in my opinion) rather mediocre and hard vintage. I was refilling my cellar when they came on the market and bought far to much wines of this vintage based on the positive comments of some critics. Maybe my score is too conservative for the moment and might increase with a few points after several years of cellaring, but I am not sure at all.

I am often disappointed with Pontet Canet and this time was no different. Read some nice reviews so I bought a couple bottles. Decanted around an hour and drank slow. Nose was very nice. Typical Paulliac with cassis, graphite and some black fruits. Palate was almost dead. Nothing in the middle and kind of aggressive acid on the finish. Maybe needs more time? Feel like this wine is over hyped, commanding almost second growth money, but I am usually not impressed. I actually like 06 Bordeaux but not this one.
Best showing of 2006 PC in years but still not a great wine. Strong cassis taste but a little linear, shortish blackcurrant finish. Lacks length and complexity

Agree with Reeseling. In a nice spot now with plush texture and nice fruit. However, secondary and tertiary flavors are absent. Very drinkable and well balanced.
Writing from memory… purchased in Strasbourg 5 minutes before the shop closed. This is a big, massive, dense, powerful wine which I could not believe already has 18 years under its belt. Definitely drinkable but quite tannic and primary but some secondary floral notes are starting to peak through. One of the longest finishes I have ever experienced on a wine. This is wonderful stuff and has a long life ahead of it.
This needs one or two hours of air, but showed like a lovely, cool yet densely fruited, Bordeaux with elegantly used oak, graphite, cigar box, good acidity.

Showing very well. Decanted for 2 hours and served with rib roast. Cedar, earth, graphite, some mint on the nose. Beautifully balanced - medium + acidity. Tannins refined. long finish.

Some Pauillac characteristic but not showing much depth. The moderate tannins may resolve in a few years but secondary/tertiary development may never happen. My remaining six bottles will be opened one per year. Hopefully will be pleasantly surprised.
OMG #105 (Ann Arbor, MI): Dark and brooding. I sensed this was in an in-between spot where primary fruit is receeding yet tannins haven't budged much. Demands either a ribeye steak or 10 more years.

**Based on the price paid, I want to slap this wine...I thought the stinginess was from something really great, like youth! Then I let it do its thing for over 8 hours. Guess what? It was bluffing the whole time...
Before I blame this on 06, I reminded myself of some the really good wines in 06 (Smith Haut Lafitte comes to mind for sure)...and before I give this a numeric slap upside the head, I will try another soon. Just doesnt add up, but I think that PC has gone so far into the ripe side of the style that some of these vintages just don't have balance.
This wine lacked balance from the get go and never fell into place. Crunchy, tight, yet out of whack and lacking development. The best part was towards the end when the cedar started appearing and I could smell some tobacco down wind. I'll chalk this up to not being my stye and will not score...
Good luck with yours...I am no hater of 06, but this was very un-06
Three years since my last. No sign of aging in the color. Shy on aromas. Similar notes of black currant and graphite. Still a little grip. Clean. The vintage shows in the short finish. Not quite as good as the last bottle. This was a relative bit of a disappointment. 88
Dekantert. Knusktørr åpning, fortsetter, men etterhvert viser frukten seg. Taninene er hele tiden i overkant tyderliger. Alt roer seg ned dag 2. Ikke like stort fokus, men absolutt pen.

Cassis and a little forest floor on the nose. Well integrated tannins. Good freshness on the midpalate and crunchy fruit. More classical and balanced rather than exuberant. It was very nice although not that exciting.

(Opened on my son's 10th bday.) Despite decanting for 5 hours, it was still fairly primary in its high acidity, strong tannins, and plenty of somewhat integrated wood. Years away from its peak.
High acid and high tannin wine, notes of chocolate and green pepper, very herbaceous, we had it decanted for about an hour, but even with aeration the wine remained tightly wound, a little unbalanced acid wise.

At the 3½-hr decanter mark, black cherries, blackberries, licorice, bell pepper, pencil lead, and vanilla are all prominent. Very smooth and silky, too, but the tannins are a bit dry still. While no problem opening this wine now, with a long decant, it seems to possess all the components for further upside in time. The bottle I had 3 years ago was 92, but today 93-94, with potential for 95 down the road. As per my prior review, really wish I'd bought a case en primeur, instead of a half case.

Deep ruby color Intense fully developed primary, secundaire and tertiair flavours. Black fruit blackberry, black cherry, liquorice, oak ceder, toast, vanille, leather, mushroom, nutmeg, cloves, black pepper. Long finish, medium+ acidity, dry, high tannins, but soft and pleasant , medium alcohol. This wine is outstanding, ready to drink now and further AGRO get will not make this wine much better.

Dark cassis and berries. Mid to full bodied. I didn’t find the age was as pronounced as other CT notes seem to have. Nicely balanced and enjoyable to drink. Questionable QPR.

First bottle of a half case stored since release. Low to mid-neck fill and moderate sediment when decanting the wine. Dark opaque purple. Initially, the nose and palate of the wine was muted, with prominent tannins on the finish. It was a bit concerning. But at three hours in the decanter, the wine opens gloriously--gorgeous perfumed dark fruit, cedar, mineral with distinct graphite notes, spice and floral nuances. This is great, profound wine. It is still young and will benefit from additional cellaring. It would be an unfortunate waste to drink this wine at this stage without a long decant. Next bottle in a few years if I can keep my hands off it.
Pontet-Canet shows all the characteritics of solid wine-making. 2006 however is a difficult year for Pauillac. In the nose it shows its style but in the mouth ageing is very present. I’m a fan of Pontet-Canet but this one is now ‘beyond expectation’…
Drank this tonight as a vertical 2006, 2009 & 2016. All three opened with a similiar nose. The 06 and 09 were great from the start and the 09 kept getting better and better as the night went on. It took the 16 about 3 hours to come around and is going to be great someday, it still needs 4-6 years to really hit its stride. The 06 after an hour was spectacular, just not quite as good as the other two. Definitely worth drinking now if you’re holding bottles.
Soft tannins, fruit definitely pushing through with that classic Bordeaux earth below, spices and graphite. Decanted an hour or so and it opened up some over time, could have decanted longer. Quite enjoyable.
The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, blueberry, black currant (cassis), prune, plum, forest floor, mushroom, toast, coffee, oak, black pepper, tobacco, meaty and chocolate. The body is medium/full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

PnP after open 90 minutes. Body is medium, tannins still very present. Boysenberry, cherry, cedar, anise. This wine will age for a very long time and eventually become a classic claret. Today it’s 90pts, probably higher if had with a fatty ribeye. Best days are ahead, but may not show for 10 more years.

Bought as a pre-arrival and properly stored, this 3L bottle was the hit of a 12 person NYE dinner party. I am so grateful for the CT community who advised to allow for a 2 hour decant. I pulled the cork and poured half of the wine into my biggest decanter at 6:30pm, and, boy, was I worried. The nose was absolutely terrible. However, when I tasted it at 9pm, everything was fabulous. Paired with a rib roast and creamed spinach, the wine was singing and so were the guests!

What a wine, I just had a 2005 Lynch Bages and this is way better. I really enjoyed it. Plenty of fruit with great nose appeal and has some time to improve over a couple more years. Sad this one is my only 2006 but I will find another and stash it away for about 5 years and will probably enjoy it some more.

I have been patient with this wine, after several disappointing bottles, and have documented much of the process in these notes. This was thin and acidic after a 4 hour decant and a promising bouquet in the decanter. Not nuch structure in the glass, Insubstantial mouthfeel, little on the palate, best feature the nose. I have one left, and am in no hurry to open it.

very dark and opaque in the glass, the nose is redolent of red and black fruit with whiffs of herbs, graphite, and earth. in the mouth it is still very tight, with the tannins yielding little of their grip for quite some time. once the fruit emerges it grows in concentration and goes into a rather long finish with a surprising sweet aftertaste.
First from a case of half bottles. I had tasted this once before at the chateau in 2018 and it was tannic and tight at that time. It doesn't seem to have budged much. Brooding, burly, and showing very primary fruit, I'm not sure when this wine will become civilized. There seems to be something interesting hiding beneath the surface but I tasted the half bottle over three days and it never really opened up. Will wait 4 or 5 years for my next try and hoping others out there have better luck than I did. No score given as I would rate in mid 80s based on this experience.
So primary on the nose, with bluberries and graphite
Mouth very dark, high acidity and not so much power to counter balance. A lot of cherry and cedar. Fortunately, the tannins still present restore the balance. Very stony final.
A good one

Beautiful nose, fruit and earthy, followed by elegant smooth left bank 2006 with relative high acidity. Lack of power and length was prominent. No difference between first day (2 hours in decanter) and 2nd day.

Felt this was drinking better than the various notes below would imply. Dark fruit, tannin, tar, still pretty primary, great nose chewy yet silky, and it opened up over the 2-3 hours after decanting. Maybe not profound but still excellent.

This is a good food wine at this stage from PNP. Tannins & Acidity offer great counterparts to fatty foods such as steak. After about 2 hours in the decanter it becomes a bit faded & one dimensional. Not sure if more time in the bottle will better incorporate the wine, I would like to think so.
In the company of a distinguished vertical at Cassis, where Pontet-Canet 2006/08/16 was served - I found the 2006 to display a strong beautiful nose.
However, the aromas were somewhat bettered by the floral nose of the 2008, with lots of blueberries and some hints of minerality too.
Super soft and silky on the palate, and pronounced luscious graphite notes (I love fresh pencil shavings!). The palate is best described as strong, with nice complexity and initially smooth tannins.
However, after the 2nd pour, it kind of went down-hill, tannins seemed to become remarkably heavier. Did this wine go into a closed state? The finish remained medium to long in length.
Somm Justin Ho (Cassis) reminded us that 2006 was a rainy year - In fact, 2006 Bordeaux wine is often described as an interesting vintage.
The winter was wet and cold, the summer months were hot and dry, but then things changed.. August onwards, it became cool and wet. This was followed by a short burst of heat in early Sept, but by the time it was harvesting time, it never stopped raining.
How did Pontet-Canet salvage the harvest? With a lot of hard work! After going through the unsettled weather in Aug 2006, the hot dry conditions in early Sept gave hope for what is described as an almost-ripe grape harvest.
Then the storms of 10th Sept 2016 came, which forced the Pontet-Canet pickers to harvest a little earlier then expected; In fact on 19th Sept for the Merlot grapes.
When the unpredictable hot and dry weather returned, it was decided that a break is taken, and leaves were removed from all of their Cab Sauv vines. This attention to detail allowed the grapes to benefit from those few days of sunshine to refine their tannins!
Whilst "only" being designated a 5th growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification, Pontet-Canet is widely regarded as a very high quality winemaker and far exceeds that classification. In fact, many would describe PC as one of the top wines in all Bordeaux, I agree!
PC is located in the north side of Pauillac on the left bank of Bordeaux, and is opposite Chateau Mouton Rothschild aka "Mouton". Soil here is gravel over a clay and limestone subsoil, with average vines a rather young 35 years old.
Overall PC make some of my favourite left bank wines, in fact I have more bottles of PC then any other Bordeaux or other wines in my collection!
Wayyyy tooo young! Tannins are still sharp as a Swiss Army Knive… Fruity, super promising palate - but the f*** tannins. So weird. 2007, a year younger, way more integrated. However, almost boring - 2006 smells so much more pormising. So 2006 is either a future stunner (if the tannins finally integrate/smoothen), or a complete sorry4yourmoney. time will show. next bottle in 1yr.

I give this one a sad face. I thought my husband had added water. Missing on all aspects of palate. So disappointed. I believe it’s the vintage. It will not improve with age
In the early stages of its drinking window, this is approachable and enjoyable. Possessing a very pleasant nose of blackcurrant, cherry and cedar, the palate is well balanced. I have to concur with observations re the lightness of the palate and finish. I would hope another couple of years could start to address this, but I'm not necessarily convinced. A post script I saved a small glass overnight and it had improved and perhaps further aging could addresss some of it short comings.
Fine nose with flint and back cherry notes. Hasn’t yet developed tobacco leaf notes. Palate intense and accessible with early maturity on the attack. Fine mild tannins—but I have to agree with others that this hollows out on the mid palate after the attack and the finish is fine but not thrilling. A little underwhelming for a classified growth. May fill out with time but could just be the vintage.
Currant and tobacco leaf with notes of forest floor. Palate much less exotic. Red and black currents with chewy tannins on the back end. Ample fruit and acidity but not sure the former will outlast those gripping tannins.

Was at The Spot Marina One and decided to pop this from their bottle shop. As we started dinner quite late, this was initially firm and closed after 30 mins in the decanter. Took the other half back and it showed its potential after 4 hours. Tobacco notes, cigar box, Cedar, plenty of blackberries mixed with blueberries, creme de cassis and that lovely twang of baking spice. Medium bodied with mid acidity. Tannins is polished and fleshy but gives a layered and well balanced finish with great tensile & density

Standard Pauillac aromas of cigar box and cassis, but also some more mouthwatering dark cherry and violet, so quite promising. On the palate however, not so good: quite a grainy but smooth mouthful of blackcurrant, not especially tannic, but that's it. No progression, no complexity, just a little black cherry on the finish. The blackcurrant is fairly concentrated, but not too much so. Perfectly drinkable but there are many other 06s better than this which cost less. Hopefully a bad phase, because I got a lot more pleasure recently from a Pibran 2010 costing four times less than the 100 euros PC 06 is selling for at auction these days.

2hr decant. Light sediment. Alluring nose - iodine, coal, dark fruit, and good legs in the glass.palate long and broad , more graphite here, lingering finish with plenty of high palate action and earthy notes on the tongue. I have 3 bottles left and think it’s maybe still worth waiting., though I have been patient with this vintage, as previous notes attest - or maybe just decanting- a little longer. It does not rush out to meet you, a bit backward, and, ultimately, after 6 hours, still a hint of the emperor’s new clothes.

Upon opening this 06 Pontet Canet was muted and tannic. Found notes of milk chocolate from the start. But you can tell there’s a lot behind that wall. Decanted over an hour and then a burst of violets, perfume and tobacco showed up on the nose. Along with red fruit and oak. So balanced and well made. The palette mirrors the nose with the tannins softening. Still quite young and will easily last decades. It’s incredible where this Pontet Canet is at 15 years and more importantly where it’s headed. Plus at 13% alcohol, it’s a rarity these days. If you open now, decant for a few hours. 92-93 today, will easily hit a higher range in the future.
Update: Final glass 5 days later (Jan 5). Refrigerated with vacuvin. It’s mellowed out with some tannins still present in the background. Those nice elegant violets and perfume are no longer present. Has morphed into a more Napa Cab Sav oakiness with plum finish. Amazing how it has not fallen apart at all after 5 days. It’s built and made to last.
Deep ruby red with purple rims. Lots of licorice blackberry black currant and blueberry preserve full bodied with grippy tannins and long persistent finish.

Gave it a 5 hour decant. Even then, it was a bit closed and tannic with little fruit showing, but eventually as we ate our dinner dark fruits showed up along with the pencil lead others have commented on. Overall, it is very clean, understated, and a good companion to food. I'm hoping this is a temporary stage in its evolution.

Cork was in perfect shape. I let this slow ox for two hours. Very smooth with completely resolved tannins. Lots of dark berry with a bit of bell pepper and oak on a medium length finish. Not quite as grippy as I expected and surprisingly low acid. Nice wine.

Plum, cherry and sweet fruit. As others have noted, the finish is a bit drying. More advanced than I’d expect. A decent wine, but a bit disappointing. Not sure if additional age would be a good thing here or if better to drink now.

deepish red/purple color, ripe dark plums on the nose, oak, a bit of pepper, on the palate still with gripping tannins, plums, cherries and a steel tone, light punchy sweetness to the mid-palate offset by dried herbs leading into a slightly clipped and drying finish, I have very little experience with this wine so it is hard to tell if it is still in something of a dumb phase or is showing early signs of eventually drying out (though not anytime soon), there is plenty to like here and time will tell if this opens further or remains somewhat austere.
***+?, drink now for the risk averse or hold 5+ years longer

Dark fruit and graphite on the nose. The palate is concentrated and nicely framed with acidity. Cassis, plum, graphite and iron. Sweet fruit. Classically styled and balanced.
Went well with the leg o lamb...medium deep to deep maroon w some staining - big wafting blackberry nose, quite primary, just hints of tobacco, some spiciness - the palate is slightly grippy but certainly drinkable (has been decanted now for an hour after being uncorked for 3 hours) - a bit oaky still, but loads of fruit underneath, so should balance out - pretty much stains the palate, this is nice, will manage the lamb well, but I'm looking forward to keeping the other 4 bottles for 3-5 years minimum and enjoying the last one 2030+
Color (15/15): dense purple with ruby edge Bouquet (18/20):red berries, black tea with a funk that wears off with time Palate (27/30): medium body, dry wine with HIGH tannin that is still underripe. Medium acidity with a long finish of sour cherry and a vegetal tone I can't pin down. Overall: (31/35): it seems like there is promise, but it is disjointed, tannic and 'green'. I think this COULD get better with time...I hope so.
Tasted blind. Guessed Bordeaux. Tannic, concentrated, ripe but not oxidative, advanced for its age. Tannins are drying / over-extracted. Not a Pontet Canet fan and except their 2010 and 2015, I did not have a convincing sample.
Tasted with Colgin Cariad 2006; medium dark red; dark berries, licorice, light caramel; really pleasant, rounded, well balanced, slightly dry finish; most people liked Pontet better than Colgin, Pontet being a better food wine; both were good, personally I had a slight preference for the Colgin, which had a bit more sun and sweetness to which everybody agreed, so down to personal taste
A big and full bouquet of black fruits, tobacco, undergrowth, dark chocolate and smoked cedar. This needs at least 3 hours of decanting. The palate is still rather closed, a structured full-bodied mid-palate with velvety tannins to ensure longevity. Texture is rounded though. Compared to the best vintage, it lacks the ultimate complexity and depth. Transitions to finish is seamless and deep. Keep for another 3 years before opening one. 92-93 pts.
nice color, very slight bricking on the edge. Classic Bordeaux nose, barnyard funk, hints of leather, on the plate was smooth and medium-full bodied, nice finish...
Pretty ready to go at 2 decanter hours, but even better after 3. Along the way, graphite, cedar, dill, red fruits, cassis, and chocolate make an appearance. Even without food, right now, tannins are manageable. Good acidity and moderate finish. Further upside potential once the tannins round out a little more (next bottle in 2-3 years). First bottle of a half case purchased in 2008 at a great price...always wished that I'd bought more at the time. Solid 92-93 right now.
Opened for 3 hours. Color is deep red. No real age showing. On the nose : Currants , plum and graphite and a slight hint of vanilla. On the palate : Red currants, plum and violets with some savory notes that come it at the end. Long finish. Good mouthfeel with nice weight. Excellent wine. Old school at 13 % alcohol. I wish I had a case.

Double-decanted four hours before drinking with fillet steak cooked on the bbq. On the nose there was blackcurrant and graphite when initially opened. After two hours there was something quite funky and not necessarily pleasant but by the time we got to dinner it was back to blackcurrant and graphite. On the palate there is sweet, juicy blackcurrant fruit, pencil lead, spice and a touch of earth. In the mouth this wine feels quite light and does not have the weight of either the 2004 or 2008 that we've drunk recently. However, it is quite luxurious but also comes across as quite classical. The wine has medium acidity and a medium length finish. This is drinking well now with a decent decant and it will be interesting to see how it evolves over time given it doesn't appear to have the weight of the vintages around it.

Black currant and graphite tones on the palate. Drying finish. Lots of refinement. I think the vintage shows in the finish. If I recall correctly this is my fifth vintage of this wine. 1999. 2001, 2002 and 2004. I have more from 2006 and I'll let those rest a while. Those were harder wines, but this was still a bit stiff. I've got other new vintages too up to 2012, but these always need time. The older vintages are shoulder vintages and showed more coarse tannin feel. I wonder how PC sees itself compared to it's neighbors. Too often maybe like the Pichons at EP. Lynch-Bages. GPL? I'm thinking on EP offers and thought it was a good time to revisit PC by opening this one. It was a pleasure. 90

Strange I had one bottle which was sublime and then 3 bottles which tasted below average. I know 06 is a rubbish vintage but the price of Pontet you would expect better
A very fruit-forward PC with the blackcurrant jumping at you, mixed with the usual graphite notes. Still young with limited tertiary notes coming through. On the palate, juicy without being heavy. A lighter, less intense PC with lively acidity and very well-integrated tannins that make the wine already very drinkable. Very good.

This dozen of P-C has contained a few defective bottles. This was another, tried yeaterday with some ribeye steak. Decanted about 4 hours prior to drinking, the nose held great promise with big berry flavours and the subtle underlying notes I had so enjoyed at the last opening. Fast forward to dinner and it had become thin, with a short finish, no breadth on the palate and overall very disappointing, despite a goid appearance in the glass, with viscous legs. I know this is a pre-biodynamic vintage, and we have many later vintages to look forward to, but this could be the third bottle from 2006 that has failed to deliver the goods.
The 2006 Pontet-Canet is a classic left bank Bordeaux at the beginning stages of maturity. Blackcurrants, blueberries, graphite, bell pepper, cedar, leather. Medium-bodied with a chewy texture. The finish is still a bit too astringent for my tastes. Decanted and drank over 6+ hours. This became came together more after hour two.

Four hour decant. A bright dark garnet color. Exotic aromatics of red currant, star anise, cardamom, sandalwood, black tea, rose hips and tapenade. Vivid black cherry and currant flavors highlighting seamless secondary integration. Medium weight, with plush and expansive middle texture. Finely structured with terrific integration of full fine tannins and acidity that accents high tones throughout. Evocative finish with excellent length. Very early secondary phase. Drinking beautifully.

Decanted at cellar temperature and enjoyed over 3 hours. This was closed, acid forward, and tannic on open. But with 90 minutes this is dark blue fruits, nice balance, but not the complexity you would want for the accolades this wine has received. With 2-3 hours of air this drinks well and is perfectly good Bordeaux but I don't think it is on its way to great. A-
Beautiful nose on opening but not so much in glass. Decanted, little to no sediment. Somewhat weak tannins, acid forward on the palate. Expected more given reputation.
On the nose dark fruit, tobacco, spices, cedar. Good ripeness of fruit, good acidity on the palate. Tannins a little four-square, slightly thin with medium depth and good length. Drink or keep. 91-93
Structured, clearly left bank Bordeaux, powerful, but not refined (yet). Still needs some time, however there is not a lot of upward potential from my point of view.

decanted for an hour. refined, perfumed nose. forest flowers, dark fruits, a tinge of cedar. palate lagging a bit at present (blackberries, currants, etc), but tannins were relatively integrated. tart. not sure what to think. polished, modern, and, maybe, not fully to my taste. but i can see the appeal. lacks some punch, but seems to be more oriented toward luxury.

Improved over the course of 3 hours in the decanter, but a bit closed and serious/complex without much personality at hour 1 / dinner service. When it gained a little sweetness and breadth of expression, the graphite element set it apart from the 07 Long Shadows Feather, that was otherwise a more friendly wine and better pairing with the rare beef tenderloin and meaty gravy. Hold.

Clear medium/deep ruby; clean medium nose of cassis, leather, cedar, eucalyptus, cracked fall leaves and musty dusty attic; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; medium alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn; medium plus finish; outstanding quality; very subtle and nuanced - almost (but not quite) overpowered by the porterhouse; needs another 3 years to continue to develop

Excellent.

Brian's Birthday Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): A polished, modern wine. The nose showed tones of vanilla, earth and tobacco swirling around a core of cassis and capsicum notes. It was still way too young on the palate, with chewy tannins and decent acidity coiled around a rich, modern core of cassis and blueberries. Still tight and primary. There was a purity to it, and a decent sense of structure and balance, but altogether a bit modern for my tastes.

Absolutely delightful luscious nose and mouthfeel the blue and blackberry merge into a new delicious berry with knockout nose bedded with violets for the duration and tinged with sweet cedar. This is a complete effort that is perfectly structured and balanced. A drink all night, and then, another bottle wine, about the detail and whose finish lingers on into your dreams. And what a value at 2007 future price of $68.00. Could not find a wine like this in a restaurant for less than $240!
Decanted about 1 1/2 hours before drinking, we re-visited this wine last night after almost a year since the last bottle, and were very impressed. Either the previous bottle was slightly flawed or the intervening twelve months had given the wine time to develop to its potential. The wine is definitely drinking now and looks like it has many years of pleasurable imbibing ahead of it. Dark purple in the glass, with structured legs, the nose has opened up to reveal brambly fruit. On the palate, the attack is sharp, broad and mouth-filling, with tremendous length. Really chewy, with notes of violet and finishing very high on the palate. We paired it with lamb, though this was not perhaps the perfect match. Nonetheless, it worked well. I look forward to the next bottle, which I will not wait another year for.
Nose of cassis, raisins, spices, and some herbs. Tasted red fruits, black fruits, raisins, herbs, white pepper, spices. Earthy. Good classic Bordeaux. Open now.

Was super excited for the vertical tasting and dinner with Alfred Tesseron, owner of Château Pontet-Canet tasted with us on the following vintages: 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016. Unfortunately for my palate, the 2015 I tried earlier this year and the 2016 were more towards my palate preference than the older vintages. Worth the freight but no need to purchase back vintages. Great experience!
Pontet Canet tasting and dinner with Alfred Tesseron.
The fruits are dark & muted. Blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, blue fruits, plums with strawberries come on late. Lots of moist clay, dry soils, deep dark spice, crushed, rock powder, graphite, black, dry soils, hints of green bell pepper, dry herbs with blue, dark withering flowers. The acidity is round but could be better. The long finish is balanced but, for me, comes up short and a little flat.

30-60 minute decant from 375. Oak really stuck out on the nose at first but it mostly integrated. Plummy fruit up front, gravelly in the middle, and drying and grainy on the end. Slightly volatile tang. Almost more like Northern Rhone on the palate to me, and that might be a sign of over-ambition. Perhaps too preoccupied with trying to be luxurious to be completely pleasurable. I'm not totally sold at this stage, but I don't quite know how much potential is there.

93. Pnp. Graphite, mineral and black currant on the nose. Palate-blackberry, currant , not over concentrated- drying tannins on the finish. Serious wine , enjoyable but will wait a few years to pop the next bottle.

This is in a great drinking window. After 0.5 hours of decanting the wine was singing. After about 2 hours we felt it fell off a little bit. Still has plenty of bottle time left, but it's in a good spot at this moment. Beautiful perfumy bouquet with the typical dark berries, graphite, tobacco, etc of a nice Pauillac. On the palate it's big, inky, silky, graphite, mineral, earthy....oh so beautifully integrated. Med-full bodied, still pretty tannic. Super long finish. Nice stuff.
Violets, cassis, blackberry, leather, cedar and a hint of milk chocolate. Very opulent nose, but the taste was a little tart and the tannins a little grippy. Drank after an hour of air but it was clearly not enough.

We decanted for one hour, the tannins were soft, it has a bright fruit forward, with a nice earthy graphite finish. The nose was pretty amazing as well! Well worth the 13 year wait.

Decanted for one hour. Needs two or three. Very dark crimson. Off putting odor on opening that dissipated after 10 min. This is a full fleshy wine with many dimensions as we drank over two hours. Maybe needs years to get to its potential...or not. Definitely unique at this point.

I tried a glass of this via Coravin today, having previously opened a bottle a year ago. Left to breathe for 90 minutes, it seems to have regressed since my last. The structure is all there, but flavours are thin and acidic, and the nose has closed down. I will try again in 6 months.
A little tight and not overly expressive at first. After an hour in the decanter notes of graphite, spices, green pepper, dark berry fruit on the nose. Fresh on the palate, grippy, smoky with good depth and length. Quite structured and firm still. 91-92+

Blackish fruit, some mocha, clearly well made. But lacks generosity and I'm guessing it always will. Nice enough, but not up to the 2003 or the 2004. My meager supply of 2006 Bordeaux is rapidly dwindling. I am experiencing no disappointment.

Difficult to rate this one ... heaps of potential, but much too young at this stage. She struts her stuff around well, but its not interesting enough to stay focused. Needs more bottle time ( or decant for long time ), revisiting in next couple of years.

Opened and double decanted in the morning, then left to slow-ox for the day AND most of next day (!). Despite this treatment, it was a little harsh although very enjoyable with tapas. The balance and length were excellent though, so in a few years this should be a truly terrific wine, 93-95.

Still a sleeper, not sou intense on the nose, it needs to warm in the glass and decant for several hours to show its character, tobacco, leather, floral, ripe red fruit, spices very good complexity and acidity. Still very young, tannins softened with time in the glass.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. Unyielding and closed for about the first hour, then red and light purple fruits emerged w excellent structure and a medium finish. More and more I’m finding that well made Bordeaux’s just need 15-20 years before they enter their window. Less than 15 years simply isn’t enough.

With some dark cherry fruit, in 2004 they tried the biodynamics on the Merlot. And it was a shock to Alfred because they "experimented" with all the Merlot in 2004. But it was an immediate answer - the wines had something more. So in 2005 they went all the way, everything went Bio. BUt in 2007 they had to go back, so not certified until 2008.
A touch of freshness, and then grip on the back, a touch of tobacco to it. And then good grip and long finish, has a long time left on it. And its in a good place right not notes Alfred.

Medium ruby, slightly lighter at rim. Black currant, raspberry, cedar and mint greet you on the nose followed by licorice, violet, leather and mocha. On the palate black currant greets you with raspberry, cedar and mint on the mid-palate with licorice, mocha and leather on the finish with echoes of violet. A nice round mouthfeel with supple tannins (still great tannin structure), good acid and a medium+ finish. A lovely wine.
I’m hoping more time in the cellar will help my remixing bottles.... this was rather shrill - out of balance, higher acids and not as much depth of fruit or supporting tanin. All to say this didn’t suck, but it wasn’t what I normally expect from Pontet-Canet. Wait another three to five on remaining bottles.

Still has lots of fruit and big bold wine. First Pontet I've tried and I am amazed by the aromas. Pencil, smoky, but still with a hint of flowery/minty taste and smell.
This really took a long time to come up in the glass (prompting me to think once again about where in the drinking cycle we should be taking our notes: one hour after decanting, three hours or, dare I say it, the following day?). Most wine critics tend to use "is or "was" (verbs of finality) when describing what they are tasting, as if this had been a static experience. But wine tasting is not static: a wine will go through many permutations between its opening and its final consumption . I wonder if the sometimes quite divergent scores that the same wine attracts from different (and often quite professional) consumers is the result of when that particular wine has been tasted.
Very deep plum colour; on the nose pepper and oak, sweet dark berry, very pure lift; taste rather disappointing initially - just too much acidity, although not unattractive. But with air, the wine softened and broadened out, taking on more mouthfeel, with good longueur. But obviously Pontet-Canet can do better than this. On this show I would rank it, however, after both Leoville B and Leoville P. But 2006 is a vintage that, I am starting to think, is rather worse than the pundits suggest.

Quite expressive on the nose after 3 hours in the decanter. Dark fruit, spices, pencil shavings, tobacco. On the palate at that point still rather tight. Powerful tannins, great acidity, good fruit and minerality. Slightly coarse and drying towards the finish. Persistent and vibrant finish. Should improve. 92-93+

A sleeping beauty in a state of coma is what it tastes right now to me. Very tightly knit and well structured, this was slow to open up, starting to become interesting with layers of notes only after 2+ hours of decanting. Still, it never fully opened up on the palate. This is at least 4 years away from hitting its peak, in my opinion. Some similarities to the 2004 vintage I tried several years ago.

Everything as expected. This is drinking well now. Integrated, calm and brooding. Hints of dark fruit, but nothing overpowering. White pepper somewhat pronounced, hints of leather and some lingering smokiness. Drank over 3 days, and clearly improved over that period. Best on day 3! Can drink now or hold a long time.

The first sign that something was wrong is a distinct vegetal cabbage water smell on decanting. Dark saturated purple with huge concentration and stuffing but the wine feels dead. There's no freshness or grip. Drinkable but I'm left only with an impression of what might have been. I suspect a storage problem. My own fault for breaking my number one rule of never buying duty paid.

Very dark. A touch closed. Monolithic and a bit one dimensional. Power over elegance. Odd chalky, grainy texture on the palate, like extract still in the wine- was it unfined. Very odd chewy sensation which was very off putting. Tannic beast which made it almost undrinkable. Dry year and hard tannins coming through. Nice fresh nose so maybe it all comes together in 20 years time? Troubling as I want to like it but can't at this time.

Not typical of CP-C, or Pauillac in my opinion. More tart and juicy than other vintages I have had. I am not a fan of tartness, but it is expressed quite wonderfully here. It comes close to the point of being too much, but is so integrated and balanced that it is lovely. A hint of acid on the edges and a long finish with subtle tannins on the back end make this very drinkable. Definitely decant and swirl vigourously. Drinking well now, but I would reccomend holding for another 4 years at least.

This feels shut down. Day 1: Dark, brooding. Unevolved. Glacial pace. Very unforgiving. The stuffing is there. The tannins are there but this is so unevolved that it is hard to get anything out of it. Day 2: Lots of wood. Fruit seems to be hiding below surface but it is still unevolved. Day 3 ... TBD
still young but displaying all the classic Bordeaux/Pauillac features in a very polished and moderate but still delightful fashion. Can be drunk now but can also - of course - be cellared for a long period.

Deep purple. Cedar, dusty soil, and a hint of cassis on the nose. Spice, red fruit, and an excellent mineral core on the palate, with ripe but youthful tannins on entry giving way to oak-derived drying tannins by the finish. A soil-driven profile. Drink 2020-2035.

Enjoyed from a 6L over dinner in Bordeaux. Great dark fruit entry, well integrated tannins, tobacco/coffee flavors with more black currant/raspberry but a surprisingly quick dropoff on the back end. Still a very good wine but I would have to wonder if the smaller formats are exhibiting even a further deterioration on the back end. The abrupt ending is the only negative I can think of.
Balanced & elegant, medium-bodied, 1.5hr decant was not enough. Nice nose. Great with the prime ribeye. Surely this will be benefited from 3yrs+ proper cellaring from now.

SUPERBE!

Tight on the nose, cherry cassis and some earth. In the mouth, tight as well, tannins unresolved and some decent fruit but this clearly needs more time or a longer decant. I decanted 4 hours. All the ingredients are there for this to get better. Still an infant.

This is in a fine drinking window. Very tight and chalky on opening. It took about two hours in the decanter to unwind, but at that point, showed very nicely. Purple color without any bricking on the edge as yet. Nose evolved over hour 2-3, but consistently showed chewing tobacco, raisin and licorice. Big and brooding (reminded me of leoville barton) and maintained my interest. Worth the price of admission to try the last of the "old style" from this house. Ready to go but in no hurry.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 11/4/2016-11/5/2016 (Chicago, IL): Very, very ornery right now. Just lots of black fruit and a bit of non-toasty oak. Very dense and black, there's just not much to be had right now. I'm certainly curious to see what this will become -- if memory serves, this is actually denser and more concentrated than the 2005 (but it has been ages since I had the 2005). Not to be touched now.

Dark and broody. Very mineral nose, not so much pencil shavings and cigar box, but more black currants and meat. Medium bodied, just a bit hollow on the mid palate, but surely this is due to shut down. I mellowed out over a couple of hours and filled in the blank spaces. Very long finished carried by minerality. Overall a complete wine, very nice to drink now, easy flowing, obviously with ots of tannins but they are sweet.

This wine is probably just coming into its (long) drinking window. Very mineral and true to the characteristics of its Pauillac origin it is tight at the moment. There is though already a sweeter tone probably from the Merlot content which makes it nice to drink already now even though I would wait 10-20 years before this nice wine is at its peak.

Decanted only an hour and drank after dinner watching the Cubs wine game 1 over the Giants. Had the 2004 at dinner with a 2006 Pavie Macquin. Lead pencil, spice, blackberry, cassis and sweet forest and incense merge with a big, dense and rich texture. Bold and beautiful.

Still dark, the color has barely moved from its youthful inky hue. Licorice, espresso, smoke, tobacco, truffle, plums, cocoa, and blackberry aromas resonate. Full bodied and packed with deep, ripe, fruit, the tannins still need time to soften and resolve. Yet, it's hard not to like the layers of fleshy, ripe fruit on the palate and in the finish.

Such a deep and dark red. Bordering black. Nose of dark cherries with some sweetness. A huge wine to taste upon opening and quite intense; mouth drying and tannic; some heat. But then it seems to shut down very quickly and become quite muted and bitter. With some air there was some fruit but I suspect this is closed down. I think this needs years. I do however have another half I will try again and let breathe for hours as this glass I gave around 4 hours. At this point in its life, not that enjoyable. But could be great with another 5-10 years cellaring.

Drank over three days. All Pauillac, all the way. Powerful bouquet of blackcurrant, graphite, cigar and pipe tobacco, worn leather, used espresso grounds, pungent herbs, liquefied bramble, funk, dry tire rubber, and metallic ores. I found it difficult to taste the wine because of the bouquet's appeal. The wine tasted like it smelled, though on the first day it came off a little thin. Not to worry however, as the wine put on weight and added power on the second and third days. The wine features medium plus acid, medium tannins, a rustic, traditional taste profile, and an evocative finish.
This is not a 'pretty' Pontet-Canet. It does not feature the floral and berried bouquet, nor the crème de cassis textural weight and 'sweet' tannins found in other vintages. Instead, it shows the Old School hallmarks that so many of the 2006 Left Bank wines share in common, captivating all the same. This is a very young wine that I suspect will reach its prime drinking window in 15 but more likely 20+ years from now...and hold for several years thereafter. A stalwart offering, sure to please those palates who count potent, strapping, and backward Bordeaux among their guilty pleasures.

DTC 2016-01; Bordeaux 2006. (@ SS): Beautiful bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits like blackcurrants and blackberries, graphite and cedar and beautiful oak. On the palate a lot of dark forest fruits, sweet licorice, beautifully toasted oak, chocolate, coffee, firm but good acidity and round but firm tannin with still a very good bite. In fact the wine is still a bit too young, but already showing some of its merits. Will probably be a truly great wine from 2024 onwards. 93 – 94+ for this evening.

Much better on day #2. Decanted upon opening for 6 hours. Was very weak, closed and tannic on first day - not enjoyable at all. Much better on second day as the fruit opened up some and got fleshier. Plum and red fruits that are muted. Nice minerality and acid on finish. At best pleasant but nothing exciting. Not very complex. Poor QPR

Westchester Wine School - Premium Wine Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS premium tasting alongside '06 Troplong Mondot & 1998 Haut Corbin. Nose of coffee & lot of sweet black fruit, color is inky purple. This wine is a baby! Tight, tannic &, for me, not very enjoyable on this night. This is a big, powerful, ripe and extracted wine that needs another 10 years in bottle before opening again. I would venture to say that the wine has recently entered a 'dumb' phase in that I had it as recently as this past year and, though then also quite tight & difficult to penetrate, I enjoyed it more than on this occasion. I had a hard time with this wine, & saw few if any redeeming qualities this nite. Put this baby to sleep for a decade and call me when he wakes up! My score is based upon what it is today, & most def not what it will be in the future. Voted #5 WOTN, but certainly not by me!

Decanted for 4+ hours and drank over 4 more. Did not give up much at all initially. Cherry, granite and some anise on the nose. Drying tannins and not much fruit at first. PnP. I entirety concur with MATTIASJANSSON’s note. This wine drastically deteriorated from 18 months ago. This time, it was much thinner and lighter. Judging from my consistently disappointing experience with the 2006 Pontet Canet, Rauzan Segla, Clerc Milon, Gruaud Larose and Talbot, it seems safe to say that 2006 is one of the worst (if not the worst) vintages of the decade for Bordeaux. According to Jancis Robinson, “this is a vintage to be bought by wine lovers only if they have an empty cellar that they are dying to fill.” Caveat emptor.
90 rating for where it is now, not for where it will be in 5-10 years. Consumed from a 375 ml bottle. Deep and brooding wine with a nose of iron, beef blood, coffee, and slightly over extracted / overripe fruit. I don't like raisin in my wine and there is a touch of it present now. A little disjointed at this young age. I expect it will integrate with time in the cellar. Give it time.

Vertical tasting of Pontet Canet 2003-2012. Very dark in colour, slightly purple around the rim. At first not much on the nose, with time in the glass floral notes, cherries, dark berries, smoke. A bit tight. On the palate a little less concentrated than the 2005, almost a bit diluted in comparison with less depth and intensity. Spicy. Tannins seem to be more present, they might be less rounded and ripe. Very decent length. Robust, classic, quite firm still. Needs time. 92-93+

Initial aromatics of unpleasant sweet barnyard to a blue fruit scent in hours 3-6. Overpowering tannins with best taste exhibiting a dry, dusty deep dark fruit tone. Lacking of structure as no acidity detected despite tannic characteristic. No reason to open now, but optimists can take heart in the depth of dark blackberry fruit, which is substantial. Once resolved, the result will be a masculine effort with limited ceiling.

I've had this several times in the last 12-18 months and it's shown a lot better before. This bottle felt thinner and a bit dull, with drying tannins, and lacking in fruit. Opened up a bit after 90 mins in decanter, but still not what I hoped for.

Westchester Wine School - Premium Bordeaux Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS season-ending premium tasting. In this flight was also 2005 Las Cases, and 2010 Pape Clement. Dark ruby core in color. Feint nose of black fruit & perhaps some vanilla. Medium bodied, very firm tannins, decent fruit but hard to overcome the tightness of this very young wine. The wine was decanted pre-tasting but clearly not for nearly long enough--I would suggest several hours pre-tasting. There's some oak still here, solid backbone and structure to this wine, if perhaps a bit short on fruit at this sitting. I would love to see this wine in 5-10 years down the road as it certainly has a long life ahead. Question is whether it will develop better balance in that period. Also, this is a wine that screams out for food; not a wine just for sipping.

A lush and spherical wine. Has complex broad aromas of dusty black fruits, some red fruits, lots of spice, graphite and smoke. Its medium to full bodied palate is elegant as well as dense and superbly concentrated. It has defined, plush and layered smokey black and red fruits on the strapping middle. It ends longish, delineated and fresh with gripping tannins. A modern Pauillac.

Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): Clear, a bit dull. A bit bretty, some moderately ripe plummy fruit. Soft on the palate. Moderate alcohol [13%]. Low extraction and moderate/diminished acidity. Score: no score (missing some notes). Alcohol: 13% (62% cab 33% merlot)

The nose showed dusty soil, hints of spice, minerals, cedar and crushed dark berries. On the palate, I found brilliant red fruits with contrastingly dense textures and building tannin. Fruit saturated the palate throughout the finish, yet it was kept in check by youthful tannin. I’m very interested in seeing where this wine will go with time in the cellar.

Served blind. Decanted and consumed over 4+ hours. Started off with a muted nose and appeared young and tight. Dark, concentrated and simple. As more time went by it got worse not better. Expected a better showing, puzzled and perplexed on this one. Out of 6, DFL.

Consumed over a few nights. Dark inky color. Black fruit, spice and fine tannins dominate. This has terrific structure and to me is a classic left bank wine. Built to age but approachable now. This is not as powerful and lush as say the 05 vintage but this has a very classic feel to it. Should evolve very well.
This is one of those wines that gets better with every sip. Ridiculously elegant and smooth. Will only get better by 2020. Couldn't resist and drank both of my bottles in quick succession. quality is on par with another Pauillac beauty I drank recently - 2000 Pichon Lalande.

This wine is too young to drink right now. It is loaded with potential. We decanted our first bottle and then started sipping. With lots of agitation in the glass, a glimpse of the future started to unfold. The wine has a great nose of spices and fruit. It tastes a little thin until it starts to open up a bit then it displays wonderful spices and fruits. This stuff is the real deal, but be patient with it and make sure it is properly cellared for maximum enjoyment later on.
Decanted twice, allowed to stand in decanter in wine cellar 9 hours. Aromatically- promised raw dark meat, deep black fruits, pencil lead, clay soil. Initial tastes- Green bananna, firm tannins, unripe black cherry. Fruit was underwhelming, presently, and acid seemed overbalanced by tannic structure, though there is evident acidity. That may correlate to the late season rain in 2006. Oak seemed well integrated, but the flavors have a short finish. We moved on to food, and the wine played much better against a grilled NY strip. Carmelized steak fat really tamed present tannins and highlighted blue and black fruits. I plan to revisit 5+ years forward.

A terrific modern Bordeaux! Pretty much open for business on the Pnp, but I let it decant 4h nonetheless. Plenty of fruit on the nose and in the mouth, less of the typical cedar / pencil shavings, but plenty of spice instead. It is mouth-filling, intense and very long. The tannins are not yet in the back-ground but do not disturb the picture. I imagine that this wine will develop a lot over the next 10 years, giving us more secondary flavours to enjoy but it is already very enjoyable

Frisk, saftig syre. Lette, tørre og finkornede tanniner i utgang. Pen lengde med svakt hint av urter. Drikker godt nå, men bør få ligge.

Ordered at The Belvedere, Calgary, AB Notes from 90 mins of decant
Nose was beautiful, inviting and very much true to form, pencil shavings sweet black and red fruit with a little spice. Concern grows with the depth and complexity of the palate, as showing today there isn't enough back bone in the wine, and although nicely balanced, it does not have NEARLY the linger I find in the 2009.
2006 being a average vintage, one should not expect perfection, thus I was still pleased with the bottle, however I do wonder of the aging potential for the 2006. Surely a few more years will help, but I do not see the potential for significant improvement. (91 - 92)

Powerful, tannic and long, this textbook Pauillac is packed with layers of creme de cassis, tobacco, blackberry, earth and wet forest characteristics. Young, fresh and full bodied, this requires another 5-10 more years before it really begins to sing. But, if you cannot keep your hands of it, I understand.

Wine opened with a powerful punch on the nose. On the palate the structure is firm with balanced alcohol. Has some notes of liquorice and red berries. Lived up to its reputation as a "Pauillac with steroids." Powerful, robust with refined tannins, this supercharged wine can go on for another 20 years with ease.

Nose - licorice, cocoa, per Erica tobacco and ash Mouth - refined, licorice, very dry red and dark fruit. Nice wine, we gave it many hours to develop. Less fruit than the 2006 Cloud View (Napa, Prichard Hill). For food.

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Pauillac (Rodwell House): Deep black-ruby; the bouquet is tantalisingly complex with plenty of liquorice, black olive, star anise, nutmeg and ripe black fruit that borders on overripe but just hangs in there. This is a powerful, medium to full-bodied wine with immense intensity and concentration made with an eye to modern Bordeaux practices. There are layers of complexity with blackcurrant, bilberry and black cherry rubbing with spices, vanilla-toast, and dark chocolate. Liquorice, ground black peppercorns, dried herbs and some roasted meat, all underscored by an orange-edged acidity. Cocoa-powder texture and fine-grained dense tannins give a frame to this well-built, solid, precise, and delineated wine. A persistent farewell, this was magnificent and will surely age with grace over the next decade.

Not surprising, this feels so young, the tannins are very polished but have huge, great, grip. Love it. Impeccable finesse and structure, clean mineral/graphite finish. Superb!

Chateau Pontet Canet Vertical Tasting Wine Dinner with Melanie Tesseron (Nicolas Le Restaurant): Dark and inky garnet core with a nice vibrant hue, still pretty tight on the nose, showing blackcurrant, roasted coffee and toasted oak. Full and robust on palate, even more powerful and richer than 2005, with notes of pencil shaving, cassis, berries. Very young and structured, need years to evolve and come around. Firm grippy tannins with long smoky finish. This is definitely an impressive wine judging by the context of the vintage. It tastes more like a powerful Napa Cabernet and not as lively as what I expect. Yet it could offered the best QPR among the available PC in the market along with 2008.

Previous notes apply, however, it hasn't evolved as I had hoped. Still needs time in bottle but concerned even that won't help it evolve. Still excellent.
From a 375. Not much aromatics when opened, but 3 hours later, singing nicely. Mouth-coating tannins, lovely sparkling feel that lingers, lingers, lingers, and a nice fade into that cedar/spice and tea thing the kids all talk about. Do I need to say "needs time" or is that obvious? My first PC and I am on board that particular train now, forever. I get why this is different than many other Bordeaux of the same price. That particular quality is a bit of a mystery, and I'm ready to explore it for a long time.

A great wine that lacks the concentration to be superior. The nose was full and true to classic Pauillac, pencil shavings, cassis, and juniper comes to mind. A little off balance at times, signs that point to the fact that the bottle has been opened before it's prime. Still a very nice rendition of Pontet, I'll open another bottle in a few years to see how she comes along. 94 represents the grade at which I believe it will obtain in a few years time.

I think this has the potential to be even better, but we drank this very young and with little decant time. Plum and currant, with a touch of dark berry, this had a dry herb finish...not fully integrated, but the pieces are there.

Pontet Canet Tasting with Alfred Tesseron and Jack's Birthday Dinner (Palm Beach Gardens, FL): Much nicer nose than the 03. Medium plus body and medium acidity with mostly currant fruit. Less ripe and more structured than the 03, and more approachable as well from its excellent sense of balance, though still needs more years in the cellar. Lovely classic Bordeaux finish with good length and concentration. Mssr. Tesseron suggested this vintage needs more time, and I agree.

Le seul défaut du 2006 est... de venir après le 2005. Ce vin, nettement moins complexe que son ainé, en est malheureusement éclipsé. Il est par contre presque prêt à être bu. Un très bon rapport qualité prix.

I drank this at a dinner tasting with 4 other premium wines. This wine unanimously scored the lowest. This wine is more red than black fruit and the initial cedar/cherry/raspberry tea taste drops off in the mid-palate. Has some tannins present and could develop, but at this point, I don't think this is worth the price.

Excellent length and balance. A long finish, but this is not a big Pontet (yet). This could be a dark-horse vintage of Pontet if the wine puts on weight in bottle, which I think it will.
This wine seems to be underestimated by most people – possibly the best value Pontet in the market, for those with the patience to wait 10 years.

Black fruits and toast aromas. Big and tannic, but not as much of a Cali styled wine than other vintages. Almost had a graves feel to it. I think this will turn out to be a great wine once the giant wall of tannins recede.

Regular dinner group (@ EM): See also my previous notes. This bottle is a confirmation; beautiful bouquet with luxurious oak and good cassis. On the palate also as previous notes. A touch of bell pepper is showing as well. Just wait at least until 2020, then it will all fall on the right place. For now 93 - 94. Probably 95+ a decade from now.

I love this wine. Bought a half bottle in macau and PnP and drank over 2 hours. One the nose, it's fresh and with a lot of flora Its very well balanced and has the right amount of tanninc, acidity and the finish was long. Like it a lot but wish it could be cheaper!

have a lot of this in storage so decided to give it a try when I found it in a store today. Started tasting after 4 hours in the decanter....finnished at 7 hours. Dark ruby red and grips the glass. Tart cherries and granite on the nose. It is way too early to drink this and I will wait a couple of years before trying again. Having said that it has the stuff to come together. Lots of red fruit, acid and tannins that make me believe it will command a much higher score in the future.

Drank this from 375 over 3 days and this thing barely opened up. This thing is wound up tight. Loads of tannins and still some oak. Plum sauce and deep dark fruits. This baby is still super dark and way ripe and concentrated. I won't open another for 14 years as it is a daughters birth year wine. I think it will be just fine and ready to drink then. I can only score a 91 right now because it is so closed up but the concentration and potential is surely there.
MUCH improved from when last tasted a little over 2 years ago. Some nice graphite notes on the nose mixed with black currant. Fruit is nicely present on the palate and while the tannins are still quite firm on the back end, they are not nearly as overbearing as they were back in 2010. Looks like this could turn out to be a pretty nice wine in a few more years.

2000-2009 vertical of Chateau Pontet-Canet, with Alfred Tesseron (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): Quite similar to the 05 yet more restrained. Once again impressive balance and elegance. Almost no oak feel and true to the Tesseron moto that good grapes dnt need a lot of make up! This wine will develop slower than the 2005 but will be an elegant beauty . Easily needs another 10years. Very nice on he nose, floral and much like the 2005 with quite a bit of fruit. Mineral, structured , meaty and concentrated and with a lot of tannin at this stage. A touch on the dry side. You do feel that once it evolves it will end up something special. Definitely one for the future. 92 now but look for high 90s once it hits is stride.

Broad shouldered, big, concentrated, tannic, ripe, black, purple and ruby in color and obviously very young, this fabulous vintage of Pontet Canet is well worth buying as it can be found for about $90. That's a lot of money, but for a wine of this quality, it's fair. Cassis, blackberry, truffle, tobacco, cedar, coffee and spice scents with air and swirling. Mouth filling, fresh, lively and structgured to age, this voluptuous Pauillac demands at least decade to mature. But if you own a case and want to try a bottle, it's well worth popping a bottle to see and enjoy how this keeps filling out and developing.

Very youthful but approachable. Dark purple to the rim with strong legs and tears. Vanilla, oak, cream and dark fruit on the nose with mo ha, tobacco and spice. Palate of dark berries some chalky wood/skin tannins and spice into a black frit plum and fig drying finish. Needs 3-5 years before starting to mature.
Later that day with time opened it evolved to a more silky texture and greater fruit yet still some full wood tannins were expressed.

From a difficult vintage resulted in a ''classic'' style needing extended ageing possibly more than 8 years. Deep ruby with a garnet rim. Expressive with ripe black fruit, tobacco, integrated oak with hints of oxidation and game. Chalky on palate with fresh acidity and robust thick but not completely ripe tannins. Overall delicate, tannic with moderate concentration.

This wine was double decanted a day before tasting. The bouquet was classical with loads of cassis, luxurious oak, cedar, tobacco and lead pencil. On the palate the same as well as firm but soft tannin, good acidity and bitterness. Enormously juicy wine. Still so young! Probably because it was double decanted, it already showed itself so beautifully and I scored it 94. This is a wine for the long run. Will probably enter maturity stage around 2020 and stay on that level for another decade.

CT Texas III; 11/18/2011-11/21/2011 (Galveston, TX): Poured through Vinturi into decanter. Great nose on this one, lots going here, black fruit, tart plum, red currant, florals, anise. On the palate, sweet core of cassis, plum, red currant, licorice, cedar, balanced by tart acidity. If not for the 86, this would have been the WOTF. Drink with a decant or hold.

Decanted 4 hours, consumed over two days. Offered graphite and dark berries on the nose. Massive tannins on the palate dominated, indicating just how young this wine is and how long you need to leave it alone before revisiting. Opened up considerably overnight, with dark berries, leather and graphite coming out more. Long finish. Those tannins need 10 years or more to settle down.

Purchased at local liquor store. Drunk at Tetsuya's restaraunt in Sydney. Decantered 1 hour and finished one hour later. Drunk at around 18 degrees C. Riedel glasses. Excellent sommelier service.
This inky wine with an intense rainbow of reds on the rim gave up generous and vibrant scents of blackcurrant graphite raspberries confectionery gravel dried herbs licorice cigar box violets manure. The scents mostly followed onto the hedonistic palate which was full bodied and elegant had a soft mouth feel and great length.

I wanted to see where this was at, and it was a mistake to pop the cork. After a triple decant and some time, it was flat. I'm hoping it is backward and shut down. Day 2 a little better. I got very dark fruit, lots of mineral and tar, and a very distinct creaminess. The finish gave me pause as it was a bit short. Do not open next bottle until 2015 and hoping for the best.

A lot of cassis and powerful tannin which makes this wine not an easy drinker at the moment. I still believe this wine has everything in it to become a truly great wine when given enough time. Wait until 2020 – 2022. I score it 93 for the moment And that might be a few points too much for the pleasure it's giving now, but too few in 10 – 12 years from now. Only future can tell…

This wine is gorgeous in the glass with a brilliant, opaque purple-robed, almost blue-black center. Upon opening this doesn't show much on the nose, but with some air it starts to show the classic pauillac creme de cassis and cedar tones coupled with a sweet framboise note and (with some more time in glass) a nuance of graphite. The wines aromatics evolve in the glass from about an hour after decant up until about 24 hours later when it starts to decline. Oak makes its presence known, but not terribly. Acidity seems lacking, but this may be just well concealed acids by a very full body and rich texture. This has some big tannins on the back end and is front-loaded with a glycerine heavy fruit bombyness so all in all a very modernly styled Pauillac that still manages to stay somehow polished and fresh. Better on the second day; aromatics seemed brigher and more attractive but still heavy on the tannins. This beauty needs at least another 6-10 years and will go for another 3+ decades. Lots of potential, but currently somewhat one dimensional and too modern. Definitely not a 95+ wine and definitely not a 50+ year wine (sorry Bobby).

OK, OK...all baby killing comments aside, this by far the most disappointing Pontet Canet in its youth that I have had, and, when I can, I like to try them when they just come out in order to track their development. The fruit is nice and there is some structure from the tannins, but other than that there is not much to note about here. I would imagine that this will go for more than 5-7 years before going into decline, and the most that can be expected is for the fruit to mature and the tannin to integrate. It should be a very nice wine, but won't come close to the enjoyment that even the 02 PC has brought of late. No score at this point, but I am thinking 89 tops at this point.

4 Blind Bordeaux: Of the 4 wines noted in this little event, this was the biggest surprise but not necessarily in a good way. I've had relatively young Pontet Canet before and they always seemed to show some pretty nice elements that give you a hint of what's to come down the road but this bottle, while showing some nice ripe fruit flavors, became quite a tannic mess on the finish. Once you get past mid-palate, a wall of tannins is thrown up that stops everything in it's tracks. Over half the bottle remains for today so once I re-taste at the 24 hour mark I'll update the note.
Update from second day: Still doesn't really impress or show to the level that I would expect from Pontet-Canet. Where's the structure that will tell me that this wine will eventually be really nice?

Wine Cellar - Bordeaux Left Bank (Wine Cellar): (Tasted Blind): A medium to deep garnet with a strong volatile note, lots of new wood and warm fruits with resin elements. The entry is rich and ripe with a chalky texture, licks of vanilla, some hung meat, and a smoky cigar lounge. A big, powerful wine, full-bodied, the tannins have density and support nicely and there is enough acidity to give it a long finish. This has all the ingredients to become a fabulous wine even if it is still quite young and gawky. Potential is amazing! Mostly made up of Cabernet Sauvignon
Had it a few weeks ago, so I won't post very specific notes. I'll only say it was incredibly tannic the first day, but it was just amazing the next day (red fruited, cedar-leather notes, coffee, with the strongest finish I have ever experienced). Beautiful.

Dark purple...Very young so was not surprised how tight this wine is......After about 3 hours I did get some dark fruit and chocalate on the nose along with a hint of wood...Palate was also tightly wound but did show some dark fruit, earth and minerals...The fruit is extreamly ripe and focused...Good acidity and mouth drying tannins...I am going to purchase more but not pop one for at least another 5 plus years....This bottle will last for 20 plus years easy..My 93 is based on today, but this can easily be a 96 plus point wine down the road....Be patient and enjoy!!!!

Even with air, this dense concentrated wine wasn't really showing much of a nose. It is ripe, structured, polished, and feels a little modern but no overtly toasted oak here. Currently doesn't show much pauillac graphite and complexity in general. It is so young ... yet so juicy and delicious with suave tannins and tangy acidity on the finish (perhaps even a tad sharp for now). 92 for now.

What a wine! I have been exploring 2006 left bank recently and within the last month have had Lafite, Mouton, and Montrose. And now this. Trust me, it takes no back seat to the Firsts and, in fact, I thought there was more to the P-C/more potential too, than there was in the Lafite. For 1/10th the price! Clearly it was better than the Montrose and the only reason I would give Mouton a slight nod over it, was for that wine's remarkable level of fruit purity.... P-C pretty much matched the Power of Mouton, but the Mouton was just so pure. The P-C was revealing black fruits, earth/mineral/smoke. Serious tannin presence, yet the ripe fruit competed and made it, all in all, quite drinkable. The tannins on the finish were drier, yet the sweet fruit continued to linger long on the finish. I haven't cracked any of my 2005 yet, so for me this was the greatest Pontet-Canet I have ever had.

first of all if you own a bottle of this wine : don't open it, it is way too young, the first day it was so closed and full of harsh tannins that it was almost undrinkable, from the 2nd day on it became much better, difficult to give a score : for now 92+ but I think in 2020/2025 it could score 94-95

Dinner at home with my friend George. Saturated ruby. Very shy nose at the beginning. Needs aeration for at least 1 hour to reveal aromas of sour cherries, berries, nail polish and rubber. Full bodied with ripe tannins, and high level of acidity. Flavors of dark fruits, gentle oaky vanilla, ink and leather. Great wine but very young. Needs time. Perfect match with tournedos Rossini!

From a 375 - very tight the first night (New Yers Eve), but after alot of decanting was "drinkable", not in a bad way. It just looked like this had some great stuffing that was being muted by youth. Second night, what a change. Great, open fruits, still a strong hint of tannin, but in a blind tasting would never had put this in the Bordeaux. More like a Cali blend. Just too young!

Very deep colour. Slow to open, initially cool, earthy, then freshly herbal, almost minty, with small black berry fruit, graphite, some toast. Quite noble in fact. Med+ body, a bit softer and less concentrated than a few St. Estèphes tasted just before it, but very fine later on its own. Very young, spicy, dark-toned with a fresh note over it, good tannic structure, juicy acidity, very tasty. Very good coffee (like Matari, fruity and mineral) and dark berries in the aftertaste. Very long. Great, but needs time.

It takes quite a bit of air time to get through the tanins. I'm sure 5 years in the bottle will help this. Its a pleasure to find a mediun weight wine rather than the usuall thick, overly rich type so popular now. Nice fresh fruit, well balanced (other than the tanins that can be managed) with a pretty good follow through. Really enjoyable.

Meaty fruit, dark tar, and lots of nice herbs and menthol. Tightly wound fine tannins and a long dry acidic finish. Black wood and suave oak. Broad, dense. Needs many years. Has a lot going on. A rich, smooth fruit core with a dark undertone can be barely detected hiding underneath it all. This will be a good one.

Ho hum, yet another outstanding effort from Chateau Pontet-Canet. I sat next to Alfred Tesseron at a restaurant near Times Square two years ago, when all the buzz was about the 2005 vintage. "Yes," he said to me with a wink. "But you should see our 2006!" There was nothing on the nose when I first uncorked this wine. But it just kept opening, very slowly, to reveal classic 1996-like Pauillac characteristics of ripe, structured cabernet, ripe blackberries and cassis. Exhiliarating finish. Purple/black. With the fully-unfolding Pauillac we had blackberries and cream for dessert... oh yeah. In the end, despite all the ripe fruit bursting at the seams, the wine displays a very appealing restraint. The wood is pleasantly restrained. Mouton-like. Like the '96 Pontet-Canet, this is a wine of first-growth quality. I agree with He-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless that this is a 50-year wine, but I don't think we'll have to wait half a century to enjoy this wine. I think this is one of those wines, like the '96 Pontet Canet, that will drink well young, will be enjoyable as it evolves over the decades, yet will be enjoyed by our grandchildren. 13.0% alcohol. Wow!

Deeply colored, the nose was slightly muted, but with coaxing scents of cassis, oak and chocolate could be discovered. In the mouth, you get a big juicy bite of ripe, fresh Cabernet. The wine offers good length with ample tannin and structure to age.

Black in color. Aromas of powerful dark currant, leather, charcoal and licorice follow through to a rich full body, with a chewy, velvety palate of ripe tannins. Incredible long and very flavorful finish. A real mouthful. This need about 7-10 years to mature. In do time this will be an extremely rewarding wine. Drink 2017-2030. - JD95

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2005 & 2006 Tasting (Hyatt, Century City): This shows great delicacy and a perfumed tone on the nose with aromas of currant, licorice, and herbs in a wonderfully expressive style. The palate is certainly more elegant than the 2005 but it is undeniably attractive with good body and fruit in a more traditional style. I tasted this back to back with the 2005 so it may have come across as lighter but I have a feeling there is still plenty of stuffing in this wine.

Some Pauillac characteristic but not showing much depth. The moderate tannins may resolve in a few years but secondary/tertiary development may never happen. My remaining six bottles will be opened one per year. Hopefully will be pleasantly surprised.

Paired with a rib roast and creamed spinach, the wine was singing and so were the guests!

left-bank Bordeaux tasting – six wines/six vintages (K&L Redwood City): this was double decanted an hour or so before the tasting… my expectation was for a somewhat mature Bordeaux well in its drinking window… it seems a bit more time may be needed here.
very dark and opaque in the glass, the nose is redolent of red and black fruit with whiffs of herbs, graphite, and earth. in the mouth it is still very tight, with the tannins yielding little of their grip for quite some time. once the fruit emerges it grows in concentration and goes into a rather long finish with a surprising sweet aftertaste.
some upside potential here.

There seems to be something interesting hiding beneath the surface but I tasted the half bottle over three days and it never really opened up.
This attention to detail allowed the grapes to benefit from
those few days of sunshine to refine their tannins!

Gave it a 5 hour decant. Even then, it was a bit closed and tannic with little fruit showing, but eventually as we ate our dinner dark fruits showed up along with the pencil lead others have commented on. Overall, it is very clean, understated, and a good companion to food. I'm hoping this is a temporary stage in its evolution.

deepish red/purple color, ripe dark plums on the nose, oak, a bit of pepper, on the palate still with gripping tannins, plums, cherries and a steel tone, light punchy sweetness to the mid-palate offset by dried herbs leading into a slightly clipped and drying finish, I have very little experience with this wine so it is hard to tell if it is still in something of a dumb phase or is showing early signs of eventually drying out (though not anytime soon), there is plenty to like here and time will tell if this opens further or remains somewhat austere.
***+?, drink now for the risk averse or hold 5+ years longer

Went well with the leg o lamb...medium deep to deep maroon w some staining - big wafting blackberry nose, quite primary, just hints of tobacco, some spiciness - the palate is slightly grippy but certainly drinkable (has been decanted now for an hour after being uncorked for 3 hours) - a bit oaky still, but loads of fruit underneath, so should balance out - pretty much stains the palate, this is nice, will manage the lamb well, but I'm looking forward to keeping the other 4 bottles for 3-5 years minimum and enjoying the last one 2030+

Color (15/15): dense purple with ruby edge
Bouquet (18/20):red berries, black tea with a funk that wears off with time
Palate (27/30): medium body, dry wine with HIGH tannin that is still underripe. Medium acidity with a long finish of sour cherry and a vegetal tone I can't pin down.
Overall: (31/35): it seems like there is promise, but it is disjointed, tannic and 'green'. I think this COULD get better with time...I hope so.

92-93 pts.

Four hour decant. A bright dark garnet color. Exotic aromatics of red currant, star anise, cardamom, sandalwood, black tea, rose hips and tapenade. Vivid black cherry and currant flavors highlighting seamless secondary integration. Medium weight, with plush and expansive middle texture. Finely structured with terrific integration of full fine tannins and acidity that accents high tones throughout. Evocative finish with excellent length. Very early secondary phase. Drinking beautifully.

Hold.

On the palate black currant greets you with raspberry, cedar and mint on the mid-palate with licorice, mocha and leather on the finish with echoes of violet. A nice round mouthfeel with supple tannins (still great tannin structure), good acid and a medium+ finish. A lovely wine.

Very odd chewy sensation which was very off putting. Tannic beast which made it almost undrinkable. Dry year and hard tannins coming through.

Enjoyed from a 6L over dinner in Bordeaux. Great dark fruit entry, well integrated tannins, tobacco/coffee flavors with more black currant/raspberry but a surprisingly quick dropoff on the back end. Servi rafraichi lors du souper et bu en grande partie avec les escalopes de veau, super-accord en passant!

En bouche, ça se boit bien seul et encore mieux avec le repas. Belle intensité et équilibre.

Very mineral and true to the characteristics of its Pauillac origin it is tight at the moment. There is though already a sweeter tone probably from the Merlot content which makes it nice to drink already now even though I would wait 10-20 years before this nice wine is at its peak.

Needs time. 92-93+

Pauillac (Thean's Place): 4 hours decant, need probably another hour or two, so we slowly drink it. Still tight and disjoint but the complexity & minerals are promising. Good 45s+ finishing. Need over 10 years.

Its medium to full bodied palate is elegant as well as dense and superbly concentrated. It has defined, plush and layered smokey black and red fruits on the strapping middle. It ends longish, delineated and fresh with gripping tannins. A modern Pauillac.

Notes from 90 mins of decant
Nose was beautiful, inviting and very much true to form, pencil shavings sweet black and red fruit with a little spice. Concern grows with the depth and complexity of the palate, as showing today there isn't enough back bone in the wine, and although nicely balanced, it does not have NEARLY the linger I find in the 2009.
2006 being a average vintage, one should not expect perfection, thus I was still pleased with the bottle, however I do wonder of the aging potential for the 2006. Surely a few more years will help, but I do not see the potential for significant improvement. (91 - 92)

Probably because it was double decanted, it already showed itself so beautifully and I scored it 94. This is a wine for the long run.

Young at 5 years old and great as it is now. (NS)

Wow!

The palate is certainly more elegant than the 2005 but it is undeniably attractive with good body and fruit in a more traditional style. I tasted this back to back with the 2005 so it may have come across as lighter but I have a feeling there is still plenty of stuffing in this wine.
