Friday, June 25, 2010 - In a word, disappointment.

From 375ml, this was decanted carefully with surprising minimal amount of crust. The fill looked perfect. The color was red/crimson with crimson/orange miniscus. If I head to guess wine type by color, I would say lower to moderate quality CA Pinot Noir. Poured out one small glass and came back to it in about 2 hours. It took a minute to describe the nose on it but I figured it out. It smelled like your uncle's old chair. You know the guy, the one who smoked like a chimney. Tons of leather and tobacco on the nose that wasn't exactly offensive but not well balanced either. Wonderful flavors of fruits and plums and long finish. The alcohol was very integrated with the other flavors.

Day 2 and this has changed though not for the better. Uncle Joe's chair aromas are nowhere to be found but his old hootch is! Very hot nose with some camphor and menthol/mint aromas. Plum flavors are still present but fruit has subsided. Once again there are lingering plum/fruit flavors on the long finish.

I tasted Warre's Warrior along side this VP. The comparison was very interesting. On day 1 it was obvious that these 2 wines were related (in the flavor department), while on day 2 it was on aromas. Let's hope the other bottles show better in a few years.

p.s. I'd give Warrior an 88 during this comparison.

p.p.s. Day 3 to 4 this turned into Warrior, distinct freshness and acidity comes through. Definitely an improvement. Day 5 and 6 another change rolls around. The freshness and acidity are still around but a pleasant smoky/sooty element on the nose adds to the wine. New rating, 87/88.
