Upon opening, it smelled like an old wood chest with moth balls. My initial impression was tangy-sweet and herbaceous, like cough syrup. A few days later out of the fridge, dark red fruits and earth scents emerge. The palate became more subtle, with a rich and luxurious texture, almost syrupy, with dark fruit, chocolate covered raisins, toasted toffee, and spice. Giving the bottle time to breathe allowed the wine to develop better overall balance, and greater complexity. Alcohol heat also toned down. I don’t have previous experience with vintage port, but based on this experience, I would certainly give this bottle a very long decant. Not my preferred style of wine, but I have developed some appreciation for it over the last few days. Nonetheless, I can’t deny that the remainder of this bottle will go splendidly with my preferred use for Port consumption; over Dulce de Leche ice cream with brownies and whip cream!
Solid cork with medium sediment (needs filtering). The nose is subtitle slightly sweet and acidic with berries and light floral. The hard-palate is a wash with a wonderful taste of Bing cherry, plum, dark chocolate and caramel. The soft-palate brings out a slight acidity with black currant, Bing cherries and the slight hint of tobacco. The tip of the tongue starts with dark chocolate, vanilla, and cherries. The middle transitions into and raisin and chocolate flavor. The cheeks taste chocolate and tobacco. The finish is a medium finish with a light brandy burn. Overall this port is moist and very pleasant.

A beautiful port which we added as an afterthought to a nice dinner with a quick decant. Structured and tasty with satisfying finish this really kicked it up by a few more notches on night 2. Long life ahead.

After midnight on NYE. Personally, in memoriam of Port over Todd, who always brought VP to this event. Decanted in afternoon, re-bottled early evening, re-decanted at event for another 2-3 hours, drunk after midnight. Light color with waves of sweet baking spice, dark fruits. Sweet tannins. In a very good place. Delicious. 93-94

Excellent, from a half bottle and drinking perfectly right now. Mature fruit and spices but still some freshness that belies its age. With cheese as a perfect ending to a holiday meal with friends.
Really lovely and drinking perfectly now. Much fuller than other Watrre’s that I’ve had. Dark, low, and round, with not particularly pronounced tannins. Black currant and blackberry—grape must and maybe blueberry too. Possibly hints of menthol and thyme. Still fresh and lively—not youthful, but plenty of life left. Pronounced and proud, though lacking the muscle and complexity of a Taylor’s from the same year. Very enjoyable and worth thinking about opening soon

This is in perfect condition for drinking now. Was quite open even shortly after decanting but even more delicious the following day. Layers of spice and dried fruit. Great acidity to balance the sweetness. Incredible length. What a treat 😋
Youthful medium deep maroon with just a hint of brown creeping in. Nose is enticing, with enough youthful fruit to beckon, and enough subtle complexities to create intrigue and draw you back. Just entering prime drinking window. Has a lovely unctuous mouthfeel, which is lovely because it envelops the mouth, but the acidity keeps it from being cloying or annoying. Some of the fruit also has a very youthful, piquant red berry freshness that it surprising and welcome in a wine of this age. Quite liking this!!

Fortified Evening with the TWS North London Group (Must & Lees, Warren Street): Less giving on the nose than the 1994 Graham, but I find it more complete. An earlier bottle was a bit thin, perhaps there was something wrong with it, but with is much fuller and pretty sexy stuff. Gets better in the glass (and this is after a 12 hour double-decant, something that all the VPs had had I think). I get plums, spices, and the fruity sweetness outweighs the acidity which is what I think I want from Port. Half the bottle retained for a second evening.

This was good but not great. Maybe could have benefitted from a decant or more air or maybe still young. Brough to Denver Wine Group Winter Wine Tasting.

Fruitcake, anise, dried apricot and powdered sugar on the nose. Dry on the palate with more anise and dark red fruit. Still mildly tannic and perhaps a touch hot. Lots of life left.

Double decanted 8 hours before services. Opaque red with no color change. Palate full of plums, chocolate, baking spices. Lots of sweetness with less acid than I expected. The air had tamed the alcohol heat. A really good drink with chocolate and pecan brownies. Not close to maturity. This will go another 20 years.

Colorado Memorial Day Tasting; 5/26/2023-5/27/2023 (Longmont, Colorado): Dark, extracted purple-ruby in color. anise, black licorice, plum, and some light herbal notes on the nose. Rich palate with lush boysenberry, cocoa powder, and plum. Elegant and approachable wine with smooth tannins on the long finish.

Seems young like a 2016 still maintaining its dark colour, nose still closed a monster perfectly balanced sweetness, acidity. Will age indefinitely! What an incredible bottle, WOW!

Cork crumbled on opening and required all my tools to extract and the Durant won the night . Nose was richly dark and aromatic. Palate was rich dark sweet with nicely integrated alcohol and a long rich finish. Still youthful and with a long life ahead of it.

I forgive mature vintage port a lot, particularly the frustration of trying to get at it. A year on from my last bottle, nothing has changed, but please open and decant at least a day ahead. The bad news is that the cork, though clean, is as crumbly as ever. The good news is that the bottle has lain undisturbed for ten years, so the sediment is quite firmly attached to the glass andlittle wine is lost on decanting. The wine itself is worth the effort. The violet nose takes time to develop and in the mouth there is just layer and layer of flavor with a long lingering caramel finish. Mmmm….pass the port please.

From 75cl, short pasty/crumbly cork under double capsule, extracted with minimal drama using my ah-so. Decanted 2 hours. The "fig-plum" fruit I recorded in Warre's 1994 LBV back in 2005 is the basis here too, but the package is more complex and satisfying. Pleasant violet and clove aromatics; healthy sweetness on the silky-textured entry segues to bright acidity on the vibrant mid-palate, and residual, fine-grained tannic grip on the long finish. Just gorgeous now, but no hurry. 93P

Spiritus plum and cedar bouquet. Medium sweet with good grip. Nicely concentrated luscious dark fruit taste. Tannins mostly resolved, though should easily hold another 4-6 years. A really well balanced mid-weight Port. Served from half bottle after popping cork about an hour before tasting.

375ml. Decanted 4 hours before first sampling. Dark color. Grape on the nose. Grapes and (baking?) spices on the palette. Complex all around. Complex yet not overpowering any direction. Almost seems young? A pleasure to drink. 95 points.
So difficult to describe, this. Like a soup - dense and treacly. Thick and sticky, like molasses. Quite brutal in a way, but also sharp and spicy. Dense, thick, oily, giving. Clearly capable of 50-70 years, so 2064, 2074?!

- Brick color with medium forming legs. It's in total harmony and has flavours of strawberry, black currant and blackberry with a full body. Juicy texture with a long finish - This is our give one of the best ports Ive had. The 1994 wheres vintage port is drinking very well at this time.
This wine must be decanted as it does have a lot of sediment. Beautiful sweet fruit permeates this port. It is ready to drink.

From a .375. Decanted by restaurant staff prior to our arrival and in the decanter for about four hours before consumption. I was advised that there was significant sediment. Port was clear; cough-syrup colored bowl to a lighter rim. Large clear halo. Nose was very nice: cherries, blackberries and no obvious alcohol vapors. Medium weight (for a vintage port that is) with a smooth, slightly warm and and very round palate suggesting cherries jubilee and sweet plums. Medium finish. The restaurant flash-grilled walnuts in the half shell to go with some gorgonzola for our dessert match.
This could be our favorite port. It's what port wants to be when it grows up. It'll last a solid decade in the cellar. Served with chocolate. Because, port. Our friend who is a huge port connoisseur commented that he forgot port cliff be this amazing.
Sorry, no tasting notes beyond "wholly cr@p."

Really, really nice. This (less dense) style drinks great right now. Soft and fragrant but with ample structure for the (voluptuous but mature) fruit and alcohol. Not the least bit hot or heavy. Only moderately sweet

Been saving this for so long that in some ways drinking it was always going to be a let down.
Day 1: It is decently plummy I suppose, a nice nose, and what I would call silky smooth, but at the same time it feels a bit thin and on the wane, lacking in substance and without the concentrated richness and body that I had in my mind's eye. Have the best years passed me by?
Day 2: Left corked on the counter it has filled out a little, but not enough for me to change my opinion about this bottle. A let down. I have one more from this batch, and I have no idea whether to open it soon, or whether to keep faith with the CT drinking window of 2009-2030 and save it for a few more years in the hope I just had a slightly duff bottle!
As an aside the cork was in remarkable condition, to the point where I wondered if the bottle was actually real? It has just the merest hint of soaking at the bottom, 90% of it is perfect, as in brand new perfect. Very strange indeed. It was also double sealed, the top layer of foil, the second inner layer of plastic.

Out of 375. This was a solid bottle with a very pretty nose, but I picked up a little bit of a iron/prune aged character on the palate. Other bottles have been better in that regard, so probably just some variation due to age.

Another year on for both of us. No change from my previous note. Nust glad still to be able to enjoy such a gem. But the cork, the cork. An issue I find with all old corks, as does even Jancis Robinson I discover. It’s all about the tapered corks that the port industry pioneered . The lower wider part swells further through contact with the wine. The upper part gradually dries and becomes more friable. I know of no reliable technique to deal eith us apart from the fancy fiery tongs. I do what I can then push the residue into the bottle and decant quickly. Works well for mr.

Clearly this wine has many years to go. I have had the wine in a decanter for a week and it is still evolving and drinking well. First night opened it was OK. Starting on Night two it really opened up and rounded out. I would suggest a very long decant, perhaps 24 hours, if you are planning to enjoy this port in the near term. The cork disintegrated when I tried to pull it and was very dried out. The wine did not seem to suffer in any way due to the poor condition of the cork. The 2029 drinking window seems short to me. 2035?

Another .375. This continues to evolve well. More cohesive than the last half bottle, the spirit integrating further (although, in comparison to a '77 Graham's opened a few days later, the Graham's showed that the spirit on the '94 Warre still has some to integrate). Still a blue/black fruited palate, but the sides are showing some wear and fuzziness in texture. Lovely.

This was one of the first wines I ever bought, while a student in Manhattan. It’s been cellared since. I rarely drink port and perhaps there’s some sentimental value here, but this was delicious. Concentrated, with fresh red bright fruits that aren’t cloying, silky mouthfeel - just delightful. Drank over 3 nights, 750ml.

Displaying lightening on the rim, but not browning or bricking. Exhibiting some maturity, but on the early side of it. Drinking well, with silky tannins, fresh fruits, spice and licorice. Palate cleansing acidity on the finish. Very nice, but has lots of room to grow. UPDATE: Leftovers were placed in an air-tight vial and refrigerated. This improved on day two, showing more breadth and layers.

An update 10 years on. Quite impressed by my restraint over the years! Well worth it. A light nose with chracteristic Warre prune and spice. Explodes in the mouth with layer and layer of fruit and complexity. No trace of that earlier youthful stalkiness. I am still enjoying the finsh. Of course I am now ten years older at 77 and no longer put port down. Such a shame that it takes so long to mature, but I still have ten bottles to enjoy in my dotage.

Prune and fig on the nose. On the palate, plum, prune, raspberry, and notes of fig, raisin, mocha, and caramel, with significant tannins and good acidity on the medium to long finish; some alcoholic heat shows through. This was a very good to excellent value at just over $60.

Still fairly dark in color. Rich and full, great fruit, alcohol was not as prominent to me as some have noted (esp. compared to a couple ‘85s from other producers we had at the same time). Seemed much younger than it is. We all thought this was terrific - until someone opened a Warre’s ‘77 that was singing.

very nice at only 25 years old. A bit heavy on the alcohol (over 20%) and you notice it. This gives you the "vintage port character" you want for a fairly rational price but nothing stupendous or outstanding about it.

This was just outstanding. It needed around an hour to really open up and smooth out. Candied cherries, fruit cake and a hint of nut on the nose. Smooth and luxurious mouthfeel with a complex palette featuring an incredible burn sugar/caramel note. One of the best ports I have had. Going to see if I can find more. 95--96

A Christmas Birthday Dinner; 12/25/2019-12/26/2019 (Brewer, Maine): This was decanted about 3 hours ago and served with a chocolate tort...which worked perfectly. There is a hint of bricking, but this seems as if it may just be at the start of its life. Scents of fig, caramel, and raisin are the most obvious scents initially with fresh-cut oak & clove coming in with time. The palate leads with fig, plum, and blackberry before notes of brown sugar, coffee, and toffee linger on the finish. Every 5-6 bottles of Vintage Port I find myself really shocked at how much I really love these wines. They're wildly complex, delicious, and I could even see myself pairing this with a steak w/blue cheese. I wish more ports were like this. Not alcohol was noticed, and that's been my major problem with the 77's I've had. Outstanding!!!

First bottle from a half case and unfortunately not a good one. The cork disintegrated on extraction and the smell in the glass is distinctly off-putting (pretty gross, actually). On the second day it has recovered a bit, but it remains unattractive, vegetal and slightly maderised. Quite surprisingly, it continues to improve in the open bottle, and after five days, only a very slight vegetal note remains. Apart from that, it is a gentle, mature vintage port, with cedar, cherries and white chocolate. The raw edge to tannins remains however. After a week (!) in the open bottle at room temperature, it is miraculously still alive and kicking, although the unevenness remains.

This bottle showing a bit more evolved than the previous two. Still a very nice bottle of VP showing notes of fig, black cherry, warm dark fruits, and Xmas spice. Medium bodied, clean and not showing any heat, probably due to long decant, smooth tannins and good balance. Showing ready but no hurry here.

Decanted overnight. This wine smells of figs, nuts, black cherry, chocolate and all those Christmas spices. Still showing much younger than it is, this tastes of raspberry, chocolate, nuts, molasses, and licorice. Smooth, silky, clean and sweet, this may not be up to the Taylors or Grahams '94s, but it is still a very good, delicious bottle of port. Seems like it could go another 30 years.

After quite a battle with the cork, which was glued to the bottle stem, I was able to sit down and enjoy this very nice port. From a fantastic vintage I was optimistic about trying it finally after having it sit in my cellar for the last 20 years. The aromas were very nice with some spice and pleasant fruit coming through, my daughter thought strawberries, I was thinking more plum, but it was good and that was all that matter. The tannins were very good, smooth and nicely balanced. As the wine sat it my glass for awhile I felt like it took on some of the nice characters of very good aged tawny, with some caramel notes getting stronger. My only disappointment in this bottle was that it was my last of the 94.
Tasted side-by-side with a Royal Tokaji 6 puttonyos -- and the port won by a mile (although both were good). Unexpectedly delicious. Well blended flavors from aging and a perfect pair with chocolate.

Cork crumbled on opening, a curse of mid-90s wines. Should have used the Durand. Anyway, decanted and served immediately after dinner with cigars. Ruby colored with berry and plum notes to match. The fruit is tending towards the desiccated notes and the nose and palate are taking on more spice nuances. Not particularly tannic or alcoholic, but it is port and there is a hint of brandied fruit. The next day it was even more settled and spice driven. I think this is good now, although it could last much longer.

Popped and slow ox'd for around 2 hours. Should have decanted for sediment because this threw off a ton. Dark crimson color, slight hints of tawny edges. Nose of blackberry, raspberry, caramel, toffee, sweet baking spices and a little mocha in there somewhere. Similar flavors on the palate. Very smooth and enjoyable to drink, no signs of heat. Very well integrated at this point and while still youthful, it's certainly a nice treat to drink right now.

Whatcom Hospice House Charity Wine Dinner (Parkhurst Neighborhood, Bellingham, WA): This is not showing any age; it tastes like a current release VP. Primary dark fruit, chocolate, sweet and savory spice. Beautifully balanced, medium density for a VP. I loved this wine, and the pairing with a nice artisanal Stilton cheese was stunning. Drink now, or hold until your great-grandkids are ready to drink it.

Lighter in color than expected for a '94 VP, this wine smells of black cherry, figs, raisins, chocolate, nuts and Christmas spice. On the palate the initial impression is that this is still very primary, especially when compared to other '94s that I have had. Surprising really, this would be easy to mistake for a port only a few years old. Seems to be aging slower than even Taylors. This is sweet and smooth, with notes of raspberry, chocolate, molasses, nuts, spice and licorice. Full bodied, but maybe not the most complex, especially considering the vintage, this is nonetheless delicious and clean with almost no heat showing. To me, this seems like it could use an easy 10-15 more years to show what it can be.

{Bought on release, a glass drunk when opened and the balance the following day. Perfect fill.} Drinking beautifully now and no rush to drink. Liquid liquorish fruit, still many primary elements, dark purplish and fine tannins. Very very great length. Will have to keep my hands off this. Opened 94 Cockburn the following day and at least today, the Warre is just a notch better. No reason not to drink now as it is delicious but no rush.

From a half bottle. I’m no Port connoisseur. This tasted like Port, rich, fruity (grapes? Strawberries?), some heat, and quite easy to drink. I was surprised by how light it was, medium ruby that dark purple. I would have hoped for a bit more complexity but I’ve never really seen that much in Port. Perhaps more age will help? I once had a flight of 1963s which essentially all the major houses and this was about as good as those. Perhaps it’s not you Port, it’s me?
{Bought on release, in professional storage} Still very primary and purple, sweet purplish fruit, wouldn't open a bottle yet. Probably needs at least another 10-15 years if you want to get the benefits of cellaring to maturity.

Decanted and filtered. The bottle and cork were pristine. This is still very primary. Sweet, grapey and delicious, but monolithic. Tasted a leftover sample out of the decanter the next day and it had barely moved. I wanted a port and 1994's are currently my oldest, but this just wasn't ready yet. Not scored.

My wooden case of this was soaked in a friends cellar flood. The soggy cardboard was thrown away, but months later the wooden case smells horribly of TCA. So do all of the bottles in the case. I washed them with soap and water but it is in the labels. Worried that these bottles might be influenced I opened one. The cork is perfect. Color is dark garnet with no sign of age. Nose has dark fruit and alcohol. Absolutely no signs of TCA here. Swishing shows this to be fresh and primary. Sipping shows great fruit balancing the alcohol, and there is no vestige of tannin....this is really lacking signs of age. Given its youth I regret opening, but given its composure I guess I don't. I will wait at least 10 yrs to open another.
This thing pours out the colour of a bruise. It is so primary with a core of sweet blackberry fruit. The spirit is super clean and balance impeccable. Needs another decade or more.

From a 375. Pop and pour and shared with 5 people so, we all just got a couple of ounces. Perhaps hard to evaluate but a nice, very pleasant end to an evening around the fire. Purple in color. The nose is milk chocolate covered raisins. Some raspberries. On the palate, sweet, layered, depth. Smooth. No heat. Long finish. What a pretty wine. Glad to have a few more. Fun to read the note I wrote from 2+ years ago: this has definitely settled down/matured since then:
Color: still medium-deep ruby -> garnet/brick rim. Still a lovely bouqout of plums, black cherries, fruitcake, cinnamon but just a note of pepper vs. a "burst" in 2013. Palate of figs, spicecake, raisins and pecans drizzled with a lace of molasses. No longer "young" compared to what I usually prefer -- this is seriously freakin' yummy now and into the next 5-10 years. Still reasonable at auction . . . go out and buy some. What are you waiting for?

Deep garnet in color. Rich nose, with aromas of stewed cherries, moca, and leather. Tastes of dark cherries, dark chocolate, and hints of tobacco and an underlying earthiness. Substantial tannins. Another 1/2 bottle from the 2012 auction lot. Not that different from my last 1/2 bottle in Oct 2014. Lots of young blue fruit. Vigorous palate. Perhaps a bit fuzzier texturally, slightly more worsted. Lots of leafy sediment as well as fine grained sediment particles. The spirit is integrated with the fruit but is still noticeable. Nice port. Still youthful on the palate, heading into late adolescence texturally. Followed over three nights, all good, last was best.

From a 375-ml bottle. This was brought by our dinner guests. The wine was still relatively young, for a port, and just into its drinking window. It showed the usual notes of dried fruits, leather, tobacco, and maybe a bit of chocolate, and paired well with blue cheese and romano. This bottle contained a great deal of sediment.

maybe too young, but this seemed rather heavy, short and simple. It was completely out-classed by a Rockford 1997 VP sitting beside it. Unfortunately, I have an un-opened case of these, so it came as a rather rude shock!!!!! Leave until at least 2020 and see what happens.

The fruit exploded in the glass with the impression of a very recently bottled Port. I took it for a 2008 I recently tasted the Fonseca LB unfiltered). When Loek showed me the vintage it was less difficult for me to 'unwrap' the style of the house, Dow or Warre, thick, fat fruit, medium sweet, less than Graham, a bit more than Fonseca, less severe than Taylor, very good balance, missing maybe slightly a complex core, but nevertheless a joy withe the selection of cheeses Saskia made. You can enjoy this vintage port now, but if you can wait a few years it will become rewarded.

Decanted for 2+ hours, saturated dark fruit nose, ripe-sweet aromas of dried cherries, fig and dates. A saturated palate with extracted black cherry and almost blueberry fruit. The palate is a bit disjointed as there is a sharp contrast between the core of fruit and heat of the finish. Kept half the bottle overnight in the decanter, much more balanced, but a bit muted, more red fruits, this just needs some more time.

Slight hint of bricking at the rim - pruney elements on the nose. Quite a depth on the palate, after 6 hours decant the wine was still unfurling, intense with some chocolate and faint mint and dark fruits.
Edit: Day 2 and the Warre has not really developed much more - just a trifle jagged and spiritous on the finish, I think it could do with a few more years in the cellar.

Outstanding vintage port. If possible, open it a week or two before drinking. Even though it's excellent the first night open, it's that much better many days later.

Consumed too young, in response to request from family for port to cap off TG. Certainly drinking well now, but should be more patient. Will see how it is on the second night

A small glass after dinner in Dallas. PNP, so very quiet and closed on the nose but on the palate - wow. Great balance of fruit, prunes, acid, and just the right note of sweetness. Perfect dessert. Perhaps just a notch above the '85 Warre back home.

These October nights have gotten a bit cooler in NYC, which of course calls for some port. I followed this half-bottle over the course of three nights, and it was terrific. Lots of deep, plush blue/black fruit, liquorice and a healthy dose of walnuts, which I think is a trademark Warre attribute, except the walnut seemed both a flavor as well as a textural component. Very nice integration of spirit, even on the first night. Tannins are grainy, as if breaking down. This smoothed out over the course of the three nights. Final night was the best.

Bit of molasses, prune and barnyard, otherwise lots of primary blue and purple berries. Medium tannins and big acidity. Very young and showing great potential, although this bottle did not receive much aeration and showed very ample spirit which may make long aging a challenge. I'd like to try this again after a lengthy decant.

Pretty dark still. Berry juice and EtOH nose on opening. Breathes to show better balance, powdery earth and minerals, dark chocolate, licorice, mocha. Not bad.

Very enjoyable at this stage; took about and hour to open up. Dark red and black fruit, spice, pecans and very balanced palate; very fine tannins nearly resolved but still enough to give structure.

Quite young and fiery, spicy coffee, licorice, and tarry black fruits. Opens up further after awhile in the glass. Very good indeed but I expect this to improve with a bit more time.

We finally opened this port. It's been at the top of our to drink list for a while. Just great, with lots of smooth fruit on the tongue and a long, long finish.
Served from magnum with dessert at a Society of Bacchus dinner. I did not take notes. From memory: One of the stand-out wines of the evening. Delightful vintage port made in a non-oxidized style. Beautifully balanced fruit, acidity, sugar, tannins, and alcohol. Drinking really well in spite of its youth. Everyone loved it. It was so good, I probably drank more than I should have.

Color: medium-deep ruby -> garnet/brick rim. Nose of plums, black cherries, fruitcake, cinnamon and a burst of pepper. Palate of figs, spicecake, raisins and pecans drizzled with a lace of molasses. Perhaps a little young compared to what I usually prefer (it's still a bit hot on the finish--needs to integrate), but seriously freakin' yummy nonetheless. Probably really reasonable at auction and will only get better.

From .375. Delicious. Open and smooth on the palate, no spirit showing, and the tannins are smooth and plush. Begins with a note of coffee grounds, but with only a bit of air it transitions to dark blue fruits and violets. There is some heft to the palate, it's chewey, but it is oh-so-smooth. With more air, some redder fruits enter the mostly dark blue fruited palate, and then the tell-tale Warre's note of walnut. This is still primary and dark, although texturally it has smoothed out and integrated its spirit and its tannin very well. Loved this.

Absolutely lovely and fresh. No decantning, but still fairly open from start. Good depth, not too sweet, and a remarkable mix of mature tannins and thick acidity. Mouthcoating without an ounce of cloying. Great time to enjoy the 1994's if you want them on the fresh side.

I've had many ports over the years, but this surpassed them all. After it opened up, which took a couple of hours, abundant fruit came through, along with typical port flavors, like tobacco, raisins, etc. Opened a 1994 Dow's a couple of weeks later and, while excellent, it did not reach the level of the Warre's, which surprised me because the Dow's has always been one of my favorites. But the Dow's was somewhat closed and consumed before really getting the chance to open fully. The '94 Warre's was one the best wines I have ever consumed.

Wonderful. Opened up and drank over 3 days. Fantastic. Layers of flavors - leather, licorice, dark fruits, etc. 60 second finish. Kept getting better over the days but was wonderful after 4 hours of opening.

Decanted and poured the first glass immediately. This was fantastic from the first sip. Beautiful nose with tons of dark fruit, figs and raisin. Even better on the palate with just layers and layers of flavor. Drinking incredibly well now and will drink over 3 nights to see where it goes!
Second night and it is getting better! Really smooth with a lingering finish. Dark fruit disappearinging and figs/raisins more prominant and lingering beyond 30 seconds

My third split this winter, and this is showing more compact and linear than the plushness of the other two bottles. I followed this over three nights, and, unlike earlier bottles which were open and pleasing immediately after uncorking, this was most expressive on the second and third days. It still shows blue fruit and violets, but also more tawny tones, including cedar, spice box, dates and leather. Really nice integration of tannin and of spirit. Leaves a warm, cedar-y glow down my esophagus.

A second .375 from an auction lot, and this is as good as or even better than a bottle a couple of weeks ago. It shows an impressive integration of spirit, with almost no heat, and a soft, plush texture, even while the fruit is still primary blue/black with little secondary evolution. It's also completely open and approachable with little need for air, although it does show a bit more detail and even more integration and softness of texture on the second night. The .375 didn't last a 3rd night.

Popped and poured a .375 from a recent auction lot, and sipped over five hours with oxygenation only in the open split and the glass. I'm surprised by how soft this is showing, with little of the tannin I was expecting, and also, thankfully, little heat. This seems well-integrated already. The palate is soft, yet deep, still primary with blue and black fruits like blackberry, along with touches of walnut on the sides. There is a fleeting note of funk and I'm wondering whether this has a drop of TCA, but then it seems to dissipate. Very enjoyable already at this young age. Lots of large, chunky sediment.

Really tasty - if you can picture crushed raisins in honey on top of leather, you can picture what this tastes like. Still has quite a bit of a mild tannin running in it - very interested to see what day two brings.

Decanted the day before, crumbly but intact cork. Fresh nose of fruit and coffee. Rich, dark fruit and chocolate on the silky palate. Full-bodied but not overly sweet or alcoholic. Integrated and balanced. Drinking well with plenty of life left.

This wine is drinking amazing. It is fully integrated and balanced, the tannins are in check the fruit is ripe, dark, and rich, and distinctly redolent of raisins on the long finish. There is enough acidity to keep you coming back for more without overwhelming the palate. Never seen a bottle of Port go that fast.

Plum color. Still looks young. Decanted for 6 hours before returning to bottle. Initial taste prior to and after decanting shows lots of fruit. Just a tinge of heat/alcohol, but very nice. Day two - heat dissipating. Fruit shining through beautifully. Day3&4 - Wow! Fantastic. No residual heat. Tannins still evident but just the way you want them to be. This is drinking perfectly now. Was going to pair with some rich ice cream or cheesecake but couldn't do it. Tastes too good by itself. Almost perfect. Surprisingly much better than the last time I sampled this vintage a couple years ago.

Youthful appearance. Intense dark fruit nose with plum, date, fig and some raspberry brightness. Slight herbaceous lift, chocolate and cedar. Sweet and rather fullbodied palate with concentrated fruit, carrying acidity and good tannic grip. Huge salt liquorice and dark chocolate character. Like a burnt brownie. Charcoal, smoke and oak spice - some more figgy and leathery notes towards the lingering aftertaste. Vivacious and hedonistic stuff!

Beautiful deep purple color in the body with an almost halo like lighter purple on the rim. The nose was full of sweet red cherry and raisin flavor. The wine has several well integrated layers of fruit that keep evolving in your mouth. Sweet cherry is the dominate flavor but red licorice is there as well. Total joy in a glass of port - the finish is silky smooth and leaving you wanting more.

Spain and Portugal at Craftsman: Popped and poured. This was spectacular from the moment it was poured. Beautiful nose with tons of dark fruit, figs and raisin. Even better on the palate with just layers and layers of flavor. Drinking surprisingly well right now, but should be almost immortal if cellared properly. I'd been waiting almost 15 years for this and it was well worth the wait. Great wine.

Bill Lawrence hosts the Tuesday Supper Club (Bill's): From a half bottle and decanted a couple of hours ahead of time, we're catching it at a neat time to see the transition between youth and secondary development. The sweet plum, cherry profile is starting to fade and fig and a more mature prune character is emerging. This is just a real pleasure to drink. Sweet, but balanced and not showing a lot of heat. Hints of chocolate and baker's spices to go along with the fruit. What really makes the '94 vintage so special is there's a noticeable thickness to the texture that gives the wine terrific palate presence. A/A-.

Dinner with Friends; 11/13/2011-11/14/2011: Decanted for three hours. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is all about raspberries, chocolate, nuts and raisins. Great. Great texture. Good balance. Still on the young side, but this is delicious and smooth (with air). The palate matches the nose with a touch of sweetness.

My first taste of this vintage and it clearly has huge potential.Dark, sultry and brooding with layers of fruit In the mouth. Still young and stalky though with edgy tannins which linger in the finish. Interesting contrast to the Taylor 83 that I commented on last week. Might wait a year or two before opening the next of the dozen.

From 375. Very good, smooth, raisins and prunes predominate the taste. A bit hot, but not bad, and really quite smooth. Great port, but I expected more from reading the other tasting notes.
Update: +2 points for night 2. It opened up into something pretty splendid. It smells like cigar butts and ass. But the taste is ethereal. Tobacco and earth and dried fruits. Now I just think this is way too young, and really is pretty special.

Dark intense purple ruby color, Nose was highly complex the likes of last temperance bar in Britain. A whole lot was going on here crème soda, sarsaparilla, Lancashire country side, dandelion, purple heath, Turkish fig, anise, Dr Pepper, plums, and cherries. Palate offered much of the same with some earthy notes to add. Rich, full-bodied and finely balanced. This is a fine example of great vintage port. Long brooding finish. This wine was Christmas in a glass. Still relatively youthful and has the structure to last 40 or more years. Drank over three nights.

From 375ml, this was decanted carefully with surprising minimal amount of crust. The fill looked perfect. The color was red/crimson with crimson/orange miniscus. If I head to guess wine type by color, I would say lower to moderate quality CA Pinot Noir. Poured out one small glass and came back to it in about 2 hours. It took a minute to describe the nose on it but I figured it out. It smelled like your uncle's old chair. You know the guy, the one who smoked like a chimney. Tons of leather and tobacco on the nose that wasn't exactly offensive but not well balanced either. Wonderful flavors of fruits and plums and long finish. The alcohol was very integrated with the other flavors.
Day 2 and this has changed though not for the better. Uncle Joe's chair aromas are nowhere to be found but his old hootch is! Very hot nose with some camphor and menthol/mint aromas. Plum flavors are still present but fruit has subsided. Once again there are lingering plum/fruit flavors on the long finish.
I tasted Warre's Warrior along side this VP. The comparison was very interesting. On day 1 it was obvious that these 2 wines were related (in the flavor department), while on day 2 it was on aromas. Let's hope the other bottles show better in a few years.
p.s. I'd give Warrior an 88 during this comparison.
p.p.s. Day 3 to 4 this turned into Warrior, distinct freshness and acidity comes through. Definitely an improvement. Day 5 and 6 another change rolls around. The freshness and acidity are still around but a pleasant smoky/sooty element on the nose adds to the wine. New rating, 87/88.

Beautiful dried fruit, chocolate, and nutty complexity right out of the gate. I wish I had double-decanted, as after about 2 hours in the decanter, the sweetness subsided and there was little fruit or complexity left (though this bottle looked like it may have had leakage problems during storage).
Blackest wine ever. Huge complex nose of black fruits, xmas pudding, anise and tar. Super smooth with flavours that echo the nose. Even better the next day. Cork was very crumbly so glad I opened it even though it has many years of life.

Fresh nose of raspberry liqueur, perfume like black fruits, herbs, baking spices and dark chocolate. Brandy perfume scents fill the glass rounded with brambly boysenberries and spicy oak. Nice full bodied porto covering the palate. Good acidity and fruit keep this lively finishing with more raspberry liqueur, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Still very young with tannins upfront and heavy on the finish. Touch of heat that hasn't quite integrated but nice and developing. Long finish that lingers for 45 seconds +.

Inferior to the last tasting and we certainly wish we listened to our last note where we said leave it down for at least 5 more years. This time we decanted for four hours. Tannins overwhelmed the prunes, liquorice, etc. Maybe slightly flawed as it was so far behind others and our notes? We'll withhold a score for these reasons.

We certainly drank this early, but after the 92 Beringer Private Reserve we had to have something good (and the d'yquem was off limits). Served with chocolate, strawberry and hazelnut cake. Wine was outstanding but clearly needs at least 5 more years before opening the next bottle. We have 10 left so good to experiment now. Tannins very prevalent...we did not decant, but i would recommend that you do. Finished after a week in the bottle. No change to the notes.

Dinner at Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong: Decanted for 8 hours beforehand. Black colour with no translucency. Very ripe prunes on the nose but no trace of secondary elements. Decanted contents were kept in a refrigerator to preserve it's complexity for a longer time as it was only me drinking it. Medium sediment upon opening. 2 hours -- dark purple color with red around edges. Alcohol on the nose. Tastes of chocolate and a slight hint of raisins. Hot finish. 5 hour -- Heat is gone, well integrated, raisins and chocolate 7 hours -- seems to be around its best now. Strong taste of chocolate and raisins. Delicious Next day -- still holding together nicely, chocolate the dominant taste now
Overall, a great, young port. I'll be buying more.

Tasted March 31, 2007 at an offline at WineDrinkerofTexas’ home. Served blind from a 375ml bottling. Opened and decanted for sediment about an hour before serving in Riedel (Sommelier) Port glasses. Dark purple color in the glass, slightly opaque looking. Huge and youthful nose of dark berries, chocolate, kirsch and melted black licorice. Aromas carry through to the palate. Excellent acidity with still slightly firm tannins from the still very youthful wine. Definitely full bodied and quite pleasurable at that. Good overall balance. Even from 375ml I’d recommend holding this at least another 3-5 years before trying again. Considering this wine can still be purchased in 375ml format for $29.99 I’d say the value here is between recommended and highly recommended. Many thanks to WDoT for opening this bottle. NOTE: my blind guess was it is either the 1994 Fonseca or the 1994 Taylor.

No notes on how long this was decanted. My notes just say very enjoyable, with alcohol sticking out on the end, and the score. The hot finish is something I have come to associate with young ports, so I did not mark it down for that.

Great bottle of port. Thick, unctous texture, very dark color. While this was young by port standards, it was very nice and seemed to jump out of the glass, even with little to no time to breath (last minute addition to a wine tasting). Alcohol very subdued, with fruits foremost for me. I wish i had more of this one and will certainly keep my eyes open as it seemed to be in perfect form now and also seemed likely to continue to age well.

Decanted over 6 hours. Needs much more cellar time. Very good fruit, but very hot distracting finish. Alcohol did not integrate well over the next few days, the finish stayed hot. In contrast, a 94 Dows that I had a few months ago was awesome after about a 6 hour decant.

Youthful and glossy deep purple color that commanded everyone's attention. Nose of grape and cooked white sugar, developing later to brown sugar and caramel and some alcoholic heat. Palate followed to the extreme—enormous grape flavor, loads of caramel, some wood. Long satisfying finish of caramel, cooked brown sugar, and wood.

Lovely.

In this format, still young but probably closing in on peak. No hurry though.

From .375. Loved this.

Gorgeous, creamy fruit buffered by red licorice. Maturing, velvety sweet and fine. Just super. A good showing for the x-mas eve wines this year. (95)

Great bottle. A touch hot out of the bottle. Smoothed out after a 5-hour decant. Went perfectly with the cheese course - perfect match without the strong creamy blue cheese. This is just great wine.

Really lovely stuff. I had just had the '94 Dow two nights earlier and I felt the Warre was the more exciting and interesting of the two.

In a word, disappointment.

Drank both the Talyor-Fladgate and the Warre 1994 Vintage Ports this night in a dinner tasting - thought the TF scroed higher in WS, the Warre ios showing better now. TF needs lots more time, and the Warre is drinking well now but will continue to improve in its wonderful suppleness.

From Magnum. Nose of rich, deep black plum, plum pudding, black fruits, and dates. Layers of dense, ripe rich fruit - black raspberry, cherry, and baked plum. Perfectly balanced with alcohol. Long, rich finish show lingering sweetness and plenty of soft tannins. Great now and can easily go longer.

From 375ml. Huge amounts of sediment separated in the decanter.
Lush and ripe on the nose followed by focused, bright flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, tar and creosote.
Drinking young but very delicious.

My wife drinks port. When a bottle is opened, she will have one glass a night until the bottle is finished. She loved this bottle. "Elegant style of port," were her words. When she finished the bottle a week later, she said the taste had not diminished at all over that time.

On the palate it is lovely rich prunes and red liquorice: very heartwarming. A bit hot. Huge, huge length. Brilliant but not nearly yet ready to drink.......needs another 10-20 years.

Hot finish.
5 hour -- Heat is gone, well integrated, raisins and chocolate
7 hours -- seems to be around its best now. Strong taste of chocolate and raisins. Delicious
Next day -- still holding together nicely, chocolate the dominant taste now
Overall, a great, young port.
