Friday, May 19, 2006 - Aromas of wet leaves and earth which slightly dissipate after about 30 minutes in the glass. A much better wine when decanted 30 to 60 minutes. Jammy and rich on the palate with mushrooms, leather, fruit and slight tobacco. There's an engaging and exciting acidity on the finish which the 1997 does NOT have. The 1999 is more robust than the 1997 (which I had last night, by the way) and will definitely get better in a few years. The 1997 is a smooth, velvety drinker right now, but the 1999 has a fiesty quality which makes it better. I think Wine Spectator got it right.
