Thursday, August 11, 2011 - Since I cannot (and may never be able to) afford Pingus - this seemed like a reasonable option for second best. I've never tasted Psi and am mighty surprised to find it has few of the characteristics of Ribera I've come to know and love - a toffee-like sweetness, rich blackberry flavours, alcoholic power, tobacco and cedar, and in some cases, an overpowering aroma of horse sweat (a virtue in my opinion). The wine was instead, on first showing, quite closed, then astringent and tannic, and a surprisingly low 13% ABV. But after 15 or 20 minutes, Peter Sisseck's genius started to show: opulent fruit, luscious mouthfeel, and lovely aromas of figs, dates and liquorice. Very good. It's bound to improve over time.
