Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days. Best on Day 2 after it brightened up. The 2008 pours a deep garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of blackberry compote, coffee, Werther’s Chocolate, tobacco leaf, leather, teriyaki, demi-glace, and dry earth. On the palate the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is long and slightly savory. This is delicious and has to be one of the great values in Ribera del Duero. Drink now through 2032+.

Red cherry and cinnamon aromas, meaty and full with crunchy acidity. Maturing tannins but maintains a solid backbone. This wine has turned out very well, very tasty, though its finish is not great. It was a perfect match to paella.

Similar to last bottle two years ago. Nose has cedar, blackberries and tobacco. The palate is very dark juice with earthy notes and the tartness is less pronounced. Tannins have also tempered since 2 yrs ago. This is still delicious and vibrant, but it is nearing the end of the peak.

Not the strongest nose - but clearly some cherries and some blackberries and some tobacco. The wine has a fine balance tannins and acidity is medium but well integrated - the fruit is the same as you got on the nose. The wine is not very complex - but still a very nice glass and this is why I am staying on 90.

The nose is cedar, blackberries and tobacco -- quite lovely. The flavors are very dark juice with earthy notes and a delicious juicy tartness, then growing into some definite tannic background that carries on for a while.

Decanted one hour before dinner, which was too late. Shy and anonymous at first, but a few hours later, the last glass was great. A very well made and correct wine, but somewhat lacking in personality. Great balance and nice tannic grip. Red fruit, herbs and licorice. Needs more time.

The second of six bottles purchased on release, this was decanted for 1 hour leaving a modest sediment. The color was fairly deep purple-red with no browning at the edge. The aromatics were, for the most part, primary red and blue fruits with hints of some secondary development. It was medium-full bodied with good balance and a middle that was solid but somewhat lacking in definition and focus. It trailed off rather quickly and had a clean finish with no discernible heat. Generally speaking, it seemed muddled. Even though it is technically well assembled, there just isn’t enough complexity or style to make it interesting much less something to inspire the palate. It is a pleasant enough wine that would be good in a restaurant setting where conviviality is the focus rather than what you are eating or drinking; but don’t expect it to be in the same league as Flor de Pingus, it’s not even close. It would be worth considering if priced in the low-mid $20’s, but not a worthy contender in the $30-40 range. 88 points Half the bottle was reserved to try the next evening.
UPDATE: 04/16/2014 On the second night, there was a noticeable improvement but not significant enough to change my overall impressions.
UPDATE: 07/09/2014 Decanted for one hour. This was showing much better than previous bottles. Although this was a little lacking in complexity, it was nicely balanced and didn't have the disjointed quality of the last bottle. It was quite enjoyable with beef brisket. I think this is as good as it will get now so I plan to finish my two remaining bottles over the next 2 years. 90 points

Lo Que Quiera Nat Clandestine Restaurant (Natalia's Apartment - Madrid): Deep dark colour with crimson edges. Lovely nose of fruit and wood well-integrated. Palate shows a velvety texture and a nice complexity including flesh meat and Asian box of spices. At this point, at this level, this is a very good bottle.

La boca muestra una textura a terciopelo y una bella complejidad incluyendo carne fresca y caja de especias asiáticas. En este momento, a este nivel, es una botella muy buena. Tar, mulberry, paprika, cookies 'n' cream and salty mineral. The finish is a bit loose, but the gushing mid-palate makes up for it, with a plush and fruity entry. Medium length. Drink now - 2017.

Very modern. Tight and dense black fruit, pepper on the nose an palate. The fruit seemed muddled and every once and a while I got a hint of Brett. An off bottle? Not as bright as the 2009 last month. Still had great, full and silky texture. Nice balance. Medium finish.

Not much depth here, but it's got loads of spicy cherry fruit and a sharp, youthful bite. Nice juice, just seems like the 'Pingus' name was only used as a marketing ploy.

Purchased two botttles of this wine a couple of years ago because I was hoping to try an affordable version of Pingus. Had a local wine store order them for me. Was planning to wait until 2013, but recently read the review of Pingus by the Wine Advocate. They rated this wine at 86 and described the finish as flabby; thought I had better try it. Double decanted the wine about 2 hours before serving. Served with grilled pork chops. Nose was more developed and full than I expected; blackberries, herbs, smoky. Mouth was relatively full, with high acid, slight chalkiness initially, and full round tanins in the finish, and moderate length. I thought this was better than expected based on the WA review and I hope to purchase some of the 2009 and 2010.

Very closed right now. With an hour develops some red fruited, peppery spice, and herbal aromas. Really too young to drink now. May be very nice in 3-5 years. Great acidity and firm tannins. Only 13% abv. Will likely be in the 90-92 range.

Since I cannot (and may never be able to) afford Pingus - this seemed like a reasonable option for second best. I've never tasted Psi and am mighty surprised to find it has few of the characteristics of Ribera I've come to know and love - a toffee-like sweetness, rich blackberry flavours, alcoholic power, tobacco and cedar, and in some cases, an overpowering aroma of horse sweat (a virtue in my opinion). The wine was instead, on first showing, quite closed, then astringent and tannic, and a surprisingly low 13% ABV. But after 15 or 20 minutes, Peter Sisseck's genius started to show: opulent fruit, luscious mouthfeel, and lovely aromas of figs, dates and liquorice. Very good. It's bound to improve over time.

Can't agree more with the taster below "Do not drink this wine for AT LEAST 2 more years". Graded as 'flawed' because the tannins were so harsh as to render it undrinkable. Left it uncorked on the kitchen counter... after 3 days (!) it had mellowed enough to taste some coffee, blackberries and leather.

Surely a Cab Franc, maybe 2009 Loire? No. I have never had a fresher, firmer RBD than this. Some iron and blood coming through - very much younger vines - firm fruit, very cab franc notes. Good but not really what people would expect. Which is what makes it interesting.
