Thursday, December 15, 2011 - Fairly dark and youthful looking. Strong aroma of medicinal black cherry, then some obvious surmaturite and an interesting blend of oregano and green herbs. Syrupy entry, dark fruit, bark all leavened by powerful acidity and prominent licorice on the finish. Although previous tasters have mentioned Grenache, the darker, brooding nature seems like the essence of Mourvedre to me. Big, serious, interesting wine only slightly marred by its overripeness. This traditional Chateauneuf will last for a long time.
