Saturday, June 16, 2012 - A brilliant bottle, the 2007 Shafer Chardonnay from the Red Shoulder Ranch really delivered tonight. The nose reveals perfect tropical fruits, lime zest, butterscotch and subtle tones of a hot summer meadow. The palate is full and lush, yet balanced but not very integrated. The different components of the wine are all very visible. I prefer Chardonnays integrated, like the 07 Mount Eden Resverve or the 07 Luc Morlet Ma Princesse tried a couple of weeks ago. Still this is a profound effort, drinking superbly tonight. I guess it has a few more years to go in the cellar though.
