92 Points

Saturday, October 8, 2016 - My first Rougeard, so writing this note without the benefit of being able to compare it across cuvees and vintages. But here goes. It is hard to distance oneself from the hype, but nevertheless, I thought this was great. Given the warm year and 100% new oak, I half-expected a dark, dense, black-fruited wine, but instead found a red-fruited, vibrant, and energetic wine that if I hadn't known better would have guessed to be from 2008 or 2010. It is fruity, to be sure, almost Morgon-like on the attack before the structure comes through at the end. Terrific balance, and wish I could fast-forward the clock 15-20 years to taste this at maturity, but alas, one does not have that luxury with Rougeard and must take advantage of the opportunity to drink it whenever it becomes available.
