  • October 2023 Loire Dinner (Mathilde - SF): This had an incredibly silky texture and elegance paired with power and density (and a lifted jolt of refreshing energy on the finish). Sleek, complex, and ravishing. But, I feel, a Cab Franc for Bordeaux lovers rather than Loire lovers, who may prefer a slightly crunchier texture.

  • Loire Tasting (Mathilda Bistro, San Francisco): Gorgeous nose with complex flavors of mushrooms, dark fruit, underwood, black cherries, and nice depth. Good acidity and very pretty on the palate with leather notes, red fruit, cherries, plums, and blackberries. Long finish. There is just a hint of bell pepper that might suggest Cabernet Franc but overall this feels quite "Burgundian". Fantastic wine with lots of complexity and depth!

  • Berserker Offline (Mathilde Bistro - SF): My first Rougeard. Oh so classy, with plush dark fruit, wood smoke, black pepper, ripe red pepper, so long and deep. Just keeps getting better and better over 3 hours, revealing a spiced prune in Armagnac component in the best possible way. Effortlessly elegant with cashmere tannins which makes you want to roll this on your tongue all night. It is clearly not showing all its cards yet, but it is so pleasing to drink already. Mouton of the Loire, maybe.

  • A very impressive showing of Bourg. Dense and elegant, long and complex, balanced and focused.Silky tanins, freshness on the palate, pepperbell and floral aromas, crushed blackberry, cedar, truffle, hints of earthiness. Already delicious and can only benefit of a further aging IMO.

  • Racy nose of red fruit berries and pepper.

Mouth whose freshness is matched only by its complexity: spices with pepper dominate, followed by a touch of cinnamon and a fruit that remains pure and bright. As it warms, the wine becomes silkier, with aromas of leather and roses appearing. It's fluid and with a lot of character, flawlessly balanced. Each sip allows you to turn a page and discover another facet of this wine. Nice finish on the wet stone which paves the way for a great crystalline length.

    Excellent

  • Green bell pepper, black pepper, red berries, leather, and a hint of cinnamon on the deep and complex nose. Perfectly balanced palate with great acidity and good structure. Flavors of red and dark berries and tart black cherries. Very long finish. Outstanding.

  • Shin Family's Excellent Adventure in France; 8/10/2019-8/19/2019 (Brittany, Normandy and Paris): Initially a bit tight and very ripe. With air, expressive nose displaying jammy black fruit, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, licorice, a hint of rose, caramel, dark milk chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, leather, cedar, iron and earth. There is so much dark spices. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of jammy black fruit, warm and unctuous yet silky, medium acidity, excellent earthy mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with strong iron at the end. This seems riper and less floral than the June bottle. This remains very youthful and can easily improve for two decades or more. Drank for lunch and dinner.

  • Five winos excellent adventure , mostly in Burgundy; 6/7/2019-6/15/2019 (Beaune, France): Gorgeous floral nose displaying perfectly ripe sweet black and red fruit, crushed blackberry, blackberry jam, a hint of strawberry, rose, caramel, dark milk chocolate, black truffle, cedar and earth. Beautifully balanced palate, very finely layered sweet black and red fruit, very broad, warm and round, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet black fruit and caramel driven finish with a hint of rose at the end. The palate is really sensual. Drinking deliciously yet it can easily improve for a couple more decades.

  • Big step up from the 2010 Saumur-Champigny. This is youthful and vibrant. Really lovely complete wine. Drank at Yam'tcha

  • Fabulous. Deeply layered, rich, balanced, elegant wine. Lingers on the palate for a minute plus. This is the best young Bourg I've had (thanks to the solar vintage). This is starting to show a whole picture but for best results wait another 3-5 years for it to hit apogee I think.

  • Extremely expressive nose with ripe red berry fruit, strawberry, flowers and earthy notes.A lovely soft textured wine that builds to a juicy, spicy, mineral finish.Lots of red berries and some herbaceous flavors in a good way. This is an outstanding wine at an early point in its life span.

  • From Paris with Love, 2018 Edition; 11/16/2018-11/18/2018 (Paris (Girafe, La Tour D'Argent & Epicure)): Decanted for a good 30 minutes and served.
Dark frutis mix with strawberry touches on the nose. Very much primary, young fruit but in no way sharp or austere. But still just getting into its stride. Quite rich but in no way jammy or overdone. Solid, well made wine just giving us glimpses of what it will become. 93-94 for now

  • Clos Rougeard Breze and Le Bourg and some friends (905 Fahrenheit aka 485° Düsseldorf): Both nose and palate remind me to a classical Bordeaux from a hotter year (2000 or 2005 e.g.) A lot black and red currant, some pencil and still spicy and herbal. The most "cheesy" one in this flight but with a great charme, acidity and balance. Maybe 2010 is the bigger wine in the future but now I would prefer 09. 98(99)

  • Clos Rougeard Vertical (2009-2011) (Sunfish Cellars): These wines were poured into glass a few hours before the tasting.
The nose is quite soapy and floral. Pillowy fluffy red fruit. The palate has rich coffee and tea leaves. There is great complexity and acid on all these.

  • Clos Rougeard Vertical 2009-2011 (Sunfish Cellars, St. Paul, MN): Medium dark red color. Decanted for 100 minutes. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Part of a vertical of CR 09,10,11. Beautiful nose, complex and intriguing, woodsy, earth, spearmint, red fruits, cinnamon, lovely spices. The palate is very elegant and finessed, medium body, fresh, red fruits, wood, cherry pie, vanilla, mushroom, earth, good depth, nice savory tannins and a long finish. This steps up big time from both the Le Clos and Poyeux. A very tough call between the '09 and ;10 Le Bourg currently - but I favor the '10 by a bit. 92+ to 93pts.

  • My first Rougeard, so writing this note without the benefit of being able to compare it across cuvees and vintages. But here goes. It is hard to distance oneself from the hype, but nevertheless, I thought this was great. Given the warm year and 100% new oak, I half-expected a dark, dense, black-fruited wine, but instead found a red-fruited, vibrant, and energetic wine that if I hadn't known better would have guessed to be from 2008 or 2010. It is fruity, to be sure, almost Morgon-like on the attack before the structure comes through at the end. Terrific balance, and wish I could fast-forward the clock 15-20 years to taste this at maturity, but alas, one does not have that luxury with Rougeard and must take advantage of the opportunity to drink it whenever it becomes available.

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Actually quite nice to drink now, with that typical Rougeard nose of green herbs on top, a sweet strawberry funky core, and some deep compex inky, mushroom notes going on below everything. On the palate it has a sweet attack, the mid palate is in very good balance with finely grained acidity a la Chave and sweet strawberry fruit like Rayas (I know it doesn't make sense but that's how I remember it). Very long and succulent finish. Will last forever, the 1990 is supposedly very good now...

  • The 2009 Le Bourg is, thanks to the vintage, surprisingly approachable. The Bourg is both more black-fruity and more full-bodied than its stable-mates in this vintage, coming together in the decanter to deliver a striking bouquet of black cherry, dark berries, earth, hints of medicine cabinet and woodsmoke. This wine has already eaten up its 100% new oak, and is absolutely impeccably balanced, with amazing vibrancy, focus and detail down to the simply electric and very intense finish. Magical.

  • Lunch at "Dinner" (Heston Blumenthal) - 2* Michelin. Limited note taking.
Drunk throughout the meal, decanted and poured. Deep colour.
Initial aromas of smoke and earth - and in the mouth charred oak and a strappy core masking extremely concentrated wild strawberry and blackcurrant fruit that slowly fought its way to fore over the hour or so it took to drink the bottle. Fabulous intensity and length but by no means really ready to drink. Infanticide on the grand Herod-like scale!
Leave for at least two to three years, and expect a plateau of ten years minimum after that. Will seek out some bottles. Should evolve beautifully. 93++

  • This was given significant air. Good showing with serious intensity and a core of complexity. My first experience with this wine. Definitely interesting and enjoyable. Needs time.
