87 Points

Sunday, February 12, 2017 - Deep purple, inky. Short legs, little sediment. Wood, cedar, spice on the nose. Oak and vanilla. Full-bodied, well-rounded. Long finish. Oak and tannins have been well integrated. On balance, the nose promises more than what the wine can actually deliver - nevertheless an uncomplicated, quite enjoyable traditional Rioja. I usually stay away from Spanish (and New World) wines, but couldn't find much fault with this Rioja. More interesting than most Bordeaux Sup, with less tannins (comparing with what would be a similar price point). Drinks well now and should do so through 2018/19. It doesn't have the tannins and acidity to improve much beyond that. 87-88

2/12/2017 1:25:00 PM - My problems with this wine are echoed in your note: oak, wood, cedar, vanilla, more oak. Too much oak. I'm hoping all comes together a bit better but not touching my remaining two bottles until about when you're predicting apogee.
