Sunday, April 1, 2018 - Blueberry cobbler, braised duck, portabello mushroom, vanilla bean, blackberry capote and Chinese five spice. The palate is salient during the front, middle and back; the tannins are microfiber, and the ostensibly echoing finish continues for minutes. Typical of Russian River Valley Syrah, the acidity is evident, and in this case, at the perfect amount. Many levels of depth are within. This soon-to-be legendary bottling is even more enthralling than ‘14 and ‘11. Absolutely iconic and my favorite Carlisle yet. This is near perfection. 2016 might possibly end up being Carlisle’s best vintage ever. Drink 2019 - 2033.

After 2007, ‘13 and ‘14, I often wondered if those vintages would be topped ... and with ‘16 they were. The ‘16 vintage is mythic, and the Papa’s Block is the Syrah that all others will hope to achieve - it is the archetype.
