Monday, June 17, 2019 - Impromptu ES BK afternoon session. Tasted blind. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoky asphalt tar, dark earth, blackberries, black cherries, black plums. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), very high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, black plums, black licorice, black tea leaves, smoky asphalt tar, peppery spices. Gum-drying long finish.
Very good quality. Really does have a smoky dark volcanic soil quality to it! I was guessing a big tannic varietal maybe an Aglianico - Taurasi from Campania. Turns out to be well-aged Nero d'Avola ?some other varietals inside too. Probably the best I have tasted of this varietal so far. Immense depth. Consistent with my tasting of the 2011 vintage of this.
