Killer. Took a gamble since there hadn’t been a review in some time. This is really fantastic. Tannins, fruit and alcohol all in harmony. Think it has another 2-3 years but would drink now.

Impromptu ES BK afternoon session. Tasted blind. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoky asphalt tar, dark earth, blackberries, black cherries, black plums. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), very high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, black plums, black licorice, black tea leaves, smoky asphalt tar, peppery spices. Gum-drying long finish. Very good quality. Really does have a smoky dark volcanic soil quality to it! I was guessing a big tannic varietal maybe an Aglianico - Taurasi from Campania. Turns out to be well-aged Nero d'Avola ?some other varietals inside too. Probably the best I have tasted of this varietal so far. Immense depth. Consistent with my tasting of the 2011 vintage of this.

Popped and poured. Deep reddish purple. Nose of earth, leather, licorice, dark fruit. Full, fruit forward palate of dark fruit, anise, smoked meat. Mid-palate dies a little fast. Most of the finish is acidity, not fruit. Still pretty tannic. Expected better.

Blind Tasting (Edina Country Club): OK. Floral, coffee and nice acidity. Not a powerhouse compared to the other wines sampled tonight.
