Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - My TN on this wine from one year ago (see below) is still a fair reflection of where this wine stands today. A year later, the wine shows good Bordeaux qualities - light cedar nose; red currants and pencil shavings on the palate; soft, thin tannin, but vibrant acidity on the finish. Not a bad Bordeaux, but at this point, twelve years past the vintage, this is a middle-aged wine that fails to really excite. While many '96 Bordeaux are coming alive, this one is just in a state of being pleasing but not exciting, nor deep, nor particularly cerebral. This wine is a good example of B or even C level Bordeaux, whereas A level Bordeaux (and I don't necessarily mean First Growths exclusively) should, at least in theory, be much more alive and complex and thought-provoking. Then again, this was $25-30 and drinks well enough at that pricepoint.
