Thursday, December 31, 2020 - First of 2 $($24.99@) from the big box wine store, before seeing at Costco for $3@ less, never a good start. On the nose and palate, tart, tart, tart, mixed citrus and tropical fruits and green apples, rocky minerality, white flowers and the slightest hint of butterscotch to counteract. Light to medium yellow-gold, lightish bodied and legs. Intense acidity, no heat. Good intensity, moderate persistence and complexity. Well, I thought that this was to be the season of my non-winedrinking, but the wine gods have given me a brief dispensation, and with the cupboard bare of Auberts, this was a first time choice, although I've had a number of B-C chards and pinots over the years. 9 times out of 10, I find CA chards too oaky, buttery or sweet, to the extent they are on either side of the line, but be careful what you wish for: this wine was a ball of savory salinity with an intense acidity punch which left me wishing for more of a counterpoint. Racy and energetic with a powerful spine, this seemed to me to need more flesh, coming off a bit unbalanced without food, a bit overbearing with my spicy scallops, with which I'd have thought it would have shined. My impression has remained similar with varying amounts of air and temperature changes over 2 nights, although I think that there's a chance that this could balance out with time. Still, I'm a couple of points below consensus, making me wonder if my palate is off after a few weeks without--I'll get a better test with the higher end red the gods are going to permit me--or if this is an off bottle. For now, I'll score it as not bad but slightly disappointing with possible upside. 88-89

NB: In this week of drinking slowly, this made it to a 4th night, and I like it MUCH better, much softer and better integrated with more diverse flavor notes, even if slightly less vivid, and better with food. Easy 90-91. Would stock up at the Costco price, but not for drinking now. Would give 2-3 years, or give at least 6+++ hours air.
