93 Points

Saturday, December 13, 2008 - Italian Wines to Celebrate the Holiday Season (Ross's Condo, New Orleans): We had two bottles of this side by side - the first was opened and decanted for 90 minutes. The second was popped and poured.

The pop and pour bottle was very tight indeed, with good old world Brunello earthiness, a bit of roasted meat, cherry, and tar on the nose. The palate was also tight, with the same character. The finish was 20-30 seconds and decent.

The bottle that had been opened for 90 minutes blew everyone away. This is what Italian wine should taste like. The nose has tobacco leaf, a bit of roasted meat once again, smooth red clay earthiness, and some berry fruit. The palate stretches out wide for a long time, with beautiful, smooth, and refined berries, a touch of pepper, masculine tannins that carry a touch of sweetness, and tobacco/earth. The finish rolls and rolls on for about a minute and a half, evolving into a beautiful afternote.

Wine of the night - easily. In fact, this is one of the 2-3 best Italian wines I've had, period.
