Dinner with Rob and Alet (Ingen): Spectacular powerhouse with transcendental long, long, finish. Brooding red with ripe cherry, leather, tobacco, wood notes, tar another 10 year cellaring potential left.

Medium-pale ruby-garnet, slow viscous tears @14% abv. Initially closed aromas, later barnyard, liciorice, balsamic, and black fruit, wood notes. Dry, medium acidity, high tannin, medium(+) alcohol and medium-medium(+) body. Palate of black cherry, figs, balsamic, leather and touched by herbs. Mega-structured, intense but not dense, concentrated by not over-extracted. Powerful and long finish (10's of seconds) with ample fine tannin and fruits, showing layer after layer. Remarkably fresh and vital given the age. Will keep the other bottles for later. Remaining cellaring potential up to 10 years.
Bought this bottle at the winery in 2005. Shipped to Amsterdam. Picked up this bottle in Amsterdam and took it to Dubai for 3 years. Moved it in container freight from Dunai to Houston in late summer 6 years ago. Saved the bottle form drowning in Harvey, yet had it exposed to excessive heat due to no AC for 10 days, moved house 3 more times and now finally opened one of 6.
Corked - through the cork mess a super-concentrated full bodied beast shone through displaying some of the most powerful and intriguing tannins ever tasted. Pity most of the fruit faded and the acidity became harsh. The remaining 5 bottles have been cellared in Amsterdam and hopefully fared better.
Always a humbling experience to taste such an old wine.
Appearance: Pale garnet color with light copper hue on the edge. Sticky legs. Throws a little sediment. Not problematic at all, just be careful when pouring the end. Nose: The most prominent feature is its interesting mix of fruit characteristics: cooked prunes, wild strawberries, burnt orange peel, along with development aromas: rancio (fruit cake) and new leather especially, mild tobacco and hint of vegetal notes. Palate: Fresh and lively for its age. High acid, high amount of fine, silky tannins, only medium bodied, warming alcohol 14% abv. Flavors are quite intense and consistent with nose aromas with more cooked fruit and rancio. Long finish. This Brunello is well in its drinking window but I would drink now and over the next 3 years.
Red with garnet hues, moderate saturation, clear, reflective. Aromas of Cherry, Plum, fig, spice and hints of tobacco complex. Full body, soft tannins, round mouth feel, cherry, plum, spice, fig. The wine is still drinkable but starting to loose character and strength since it is past its projected shelf life. It was well cellared some hint of oxidation but not there yet - my last bottle

Very good, but the more air it got the more the intense leather taste came out. Still very good with the meat-based spaghetti that was the intended pairing.

Nose of dried plum, black cherry, some forest floor. Deep brick red color, with virtually no sediment (the bottle had been standing for 6 - 7 hours). In mouth, same notes as with nose, with the addition of a little dark spice -- cinnamon? -- smooth with just a little grip on the finish. We had the wine with a mushroom soup of my wife's making, and the two sang together. Sorry that it's the only bottle we had.

PnP with some friends at an Italian BYO. My last bottle, sour cherry and leather. A bit more feminine than I remember. Nice balance, but dry, dry tannins. I believe this still needs some air time to open up (as other recent notes seem to attest. Went well with food, and was good, but did not wow me, like my last bottle a few years ago. Call it an 89-90...

Seattle Wine Group - May 2013 Wine Tasting Event - Theme: Tuscany (Amaroso Room - Wine Storage Bellevue): Deep, dark color depth, purple and clear. Low to moderate aroma intensity, seemed a bit youthful. Picked up light scents of funk, but not much else that I could put a name to it. Medium body, acids were crisp and fresh. Tannins were on the medium side and just a tad dry. Balance was a bit off in this direction, but mainly because it was lacking in other areas. More specifically, the wine had a nice flavor intensity, but it was one dimensional with stems/tannins being the focus. Medium to long finish, again, just the stems/tannins. Would have rated much higher for me if the palate had anything (and I mean anything) beyond the stems/tannins. 5th place finish for me. Total of 47 points - 7th place finish for the group.

Brought to the Seattle CT tasting group on Tuscany night - I rated it second, but the group rated it 7th out of 8. My score went up 3 points on my second taste, and it was even more integrated with a nose of deep mushroom, a smooth mouthfeel, and a finish of leather on the second night. Decanting seems to be in order.

Yes, yes and yes. Writing this I am on day 2, after having left a glass in the decanter for about 20 hours. Opening it and giving it 2 hours in the decanter, made it a very nice wine. Quite dark and brown in color. Fat texture. Not much fruit and tannins left only some strawberries, blue berries to go. Slight tobacco, earth and medical cabinet. This just confirms for me that most wines are not at all given the time they need. Only after about 20 hours in the decanter, this one came in complete balance. I am not a Brunello fan, but this one is getting me on the way...

3rd wine of the night so I suffered from tasting fatigue! Dark wine with mushroom, dirt, black fruits and medium plus body. Tannins supported the wine. A bit rustic. Good finish. Enjoyed.

Aerated to decanter 3 hours, served (sadly) at room temperature. If this were my bottle (having had it twice now), I'd be sure to aerate a full 6 hours in decanter, then serve at cellar temp. To watch this evolve as it warms and morphs in the glass is a thing of beauty. The current CT avg of just 90.5 seems very low, but maybe people aren't giving this the airtime it needs. At the 3 hour mark, it's as if a switch were thrown - beauty ensued. 14% abv, drink thru 2019, recommended
This was nice. I got dark cherry and some cedar. Nice balance. It might have been closed a little bit. More subtle than powerful at this point. Imported by William Grant & Sons.

Beautiful old world Brunello. Turning a bit toward brick in color. Balance is beautiful at this point. Consumed with Rib eye and the pairing was excellent. Medium tannins, nice quiet acidity - it's just excellent.

Lovely, last of a six pack I think. Every bottle better than the last. Dark garnet and ruby and very dense. Flavors just as strong with some acid supporting a beautifully integrated rush of berries, spice, smoke and meat. This will be missed. Finish is long and persistent. Very nice indeed.

Sweetly fruited currant, berry, vanilla, spicy, oak nose. Fresh, sleek palate with a touch of incense and rounding acidity, this is pure and polished but at the expense of complexity. Maturing and drinking pretty well but it's hard to get excited about this.

Opened and let bottle breathe naturally for about 30 minutes.
Eye: deep garnet/crimson color. Nose: cherries, vanilla, slight smoke. Palate: great tannins showing good structure, dark berries, cherries, finishes softer than initial taste, long finish. Excellent !

Opened and decanted at cellar temperature. Let rest for 2 hours as it came up in temperature. Beautiful dark fruits bottle bouquet, deep crimson impenetrable red color, substantial tannins in balance with huge fruit profile of dried cherry, blackberry, finishes chewy with finish that lasts over a minute. Wine is in beautiful drinking window right now but will last at least 5 if not 10 more years. Great pleasure.

Double decanted, i.e decanted then put back into the cleaned bottle. Well balanced, viscous and chewy. Earth, chocolate and coffee came through initially but reasonable but not overly forward red fruit is clearly there as well. Satisfying and delicious is the best description I come up with. This isn't something that you rave about but just enjoy. It was still almost as good the second night with simply putting the cork back in the bottle.

Wine remains strong. Chocolate mellowed oak and stewed raisins dominate the nose. The tannins are structured and do not distract from the rich fruit. Really like this wine and think I'll wait to open another.

Finished my last bottle last night. Never got the bright fruit others have mentioned. Just oak, earth, leather, stewed fruit and cocoa. Makes me think my batch may have been heat damaged. Never had a cork that leaked but all were soaked half way through. Disappointing.

Sampled 6/17/11. A perfectly charming Sangiovese. Nice bright red fruits without too much acidity. Smooth, elements of Oak, dried herbs and some dirt. Only decanted for about 15 minutes. It might have shown a little better with more time.

Decanted 2 hrs, consumed over the following 2 hrs. Yet another fine example from a (as the pundits saw it) so-so vintage. Bright cherry, sage, and a hint of sweet oak on the nose, with plenty of elegant fruit, and fine, detailed tannins rounding out the package. Medium-bodied, with lively acidity and a delicate mouthfeel. This manages to wear a robe of vanilla around its bright fruit quite well, whereas many new world wines simply go overboard in this vein. The finish is very clean, and lasts nearly 30 seconds. This is drinking perfectly right now with a brief decant and should continue to perform at this level for another 5-7 years. At approx $40, this is a solid value.

Decanted for 1.5 hours then back in the bottle. Paired with tuscan braised short ribs. The scores are all over the place on this wine and I agree with others that noted there must be some bottle variation to blame. Color was brick red along the edges. The nose was rather muted and quite disappointing. It was missing the midpalate, but showed some nice soft fruit, alone with tobacco and tea. The tannins were very tame and soft, but there was less acid than I was expecting. A decent bottle and it worked for the price (~$30), but I wouldn't pay full CdN pricing for this wine.

Wow, really lovely and bigger and better than last year. Tannins more integrated and the dark, juicy/sweet, leathery fruits and wet earth minerals all came shining through after 3-4 hours in the decanter. This is the best Brunello I've ever had. Simply marvelous.

RUSSK WWiz Holiday Party. My bottle. Bottle variation. One bottle had a great nose, which some thought was corked. The other bottle had a lesser nose and more structure (90.5). Both could have had a touch more fruit.

NY/NJ Tribeca Grill Offline 12.6.10 (Tribeca Grill NYC): Sour cherry, earth, leather, and just a very slight herbaceous/black tea note on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Gamey and savory. Big tannin, and medium high to high acid. Great wine. Drinking very well.

RUSSK Decanted 2hr. Nose of a savory red wine reduction sauce and some sawdust. Color nearly opac with some bricking. Mouth juicy with mature sangio armatics. Cherry cola and roasted meat. Right amount of gentle sweetness. Yes, the midpalate is a bit hollow, but that's not uncommon with sangio. Could use a little more umph, but still very satisfying. Long finsh. It's probably not going to get any better. I would drink over the next 2yrs. 91+points. Casanova, Talenti and Valdacava are pretty safe bets for me.

This is better integrated than a year ago but I don't think the oak treatment will ever recede enough to let the fruit shine. If you like lots of earth, leather and cocoa, then this is for you. Needs more fruit and/or acidity to be outstanding.

Very orange/brickish. Savoury black cherry fruit aromas and some sweet creamy notes too. A little bit of tar. Palate very cherry. But really did need some time. Improved considerably after an hour or so. Tannins are still quite chunky. Characteristic bitter finish.

Very tight at first and didn't give much either in the nose or on the palate. Should have let it open a lot more. Had some nice richness. Unfortunately, didn't find it as amazing as I had hoped. Perhaps it was better on the second day, but mum will have to let me know.

Open for 3 hours prior to decanting. Had some smokey funk that finally blew off. Nose had a pleasant green caramel apple background to the typical dark red leathery fruit. On the palate dried cherries, plums, strawberries, old leather, light pepper and minerals. Tannins still pretty strong but integrated nicely with the strong dark red fruits.

Dark, both in color and character. A "modern" wine that is aging pretty well. Some drying wood tannin remains, and this is definitely extracted with a touch of bitterness on the finish, but it also is at a decent ripeness level and has a lot of sweet earth, baking bread and dried fruit character that speaks clearly of Brunello. Casanova has been caught red handed cheating at DOCG rules, but I think the wine is still Brunello, essentially, for better or worse. Not my favorite, and I would prefer more purity and lift and less wood, but a good wine with many years to go yet.

There must be a lot of bottle variation (from my experience and the other notes). Even after giving it 2 hours of air, this was all chocolate, earth and leather. Very little fruit on the nose or palate. Not my cup of tea at this point, but rather enjoyed this one a year ago. I will let my other 3 bottles sleep for a while to see if they improve.

The pop and pour bottle was very tight indeed, with good old world Brunello earthiness, a bit of roasted meat, cherry, and tar on the nose. The palate was also tight, with the same character. The finish was 20-30 seconds and decent.
The bottle that had been opened for 90 minutes blew everyone away. This is what Italian wine should taste like. The nose has tobacco leaf, a bit of roasted meat once again, smooth red clay earthiness, and some berry fruit. The palate stretches out wide for a long time, with beautiful, smooth, and refined berries, a touch of pepper, masculine tannins that carry a touch of sweetness, and tobacco/earth. The finish rolls and rolls on for about a minute and a half, evolving into a beautiful afternote.
Wine of the night - easily. In fact, this is one of the 2-3 best Italian wines I've had, period.

Decanted for 90 minutes and had with Filet Mignon. This wine was singing. I had a bottle about 18 months ago that was good, but t his bottle blew it away. Dark fruit and casis on the nose. A bit of cherry wrapped ijn velvet, and maybe some blackberry on the the palate, this wine had a great mouthfeel, and just filled the palate. More fruit than I remember, great structure and just a wow factor..It went down super easy...with almost sweet tannins on the finish..will buy again if I can find ...

Good but slightly subdued fruit aromas with lots of spice raw earth flavors -- seemed to open up significantly with time and on night #2 was much improved (night #1, 86 points, night #2, 90 points). Smooth and effortless on the palate with a somewhat thin texture. Enjoyable, and I bought this on a closeout for about $27, but not something I would rush to buy again at the full price of $50-60.

Great value at $25 on closeout a while back. Lots of earth, dark red fruit, baking spices, leather. Still some noticable wood but nothing overwhelming like the 01. Drying wood tannin on the finish. This is drinking pretty well now but should be better in another year or two. Drinking better now than the 01 honestly, though in the long run the 01 should prevail.

The weekend of Cate continues. After entertaining 14 kindergarten girls at Color Me Mine for Cate's 6th Birthday, we decided to spoil ourselves. We cooked home-made, slow-cooked, porcini mushroom risotto, with white truffle oil, paired with prime filets, and home-made sweet-potato chips. We were hoping to pair a great Italian wine with a great Italian feast; so to recover from the shrills of the screaming girls amped up on paint fumes, ice-cream and chocolate cake, we popped this Tenta Nuova. Not much of a nose. A little thin on the color -- transparent garnet. We only decanted this an hour, but the initial impression was a bit thin. It seemed to lack the richness of other Brunello's that echoed around in my collected (and often confused) skull. It was at its best with the food, of course, but even then it lacked that magical Italian "it" which I am so fond of in many other Brunellos. While pleasant and nice, even after a couple of hours, its simply kind of "ok, fine". A nice texture is starting to emerge, and there is a nice earthy, tree-bark, dampness to the wine, but it lacked the magical sweet-chalk ghost which so often sneaks in among the fruit of better Brunellos. Hence the rating. Nice, but easily forgotten. I can sense from the reviews below that better things might emerge soon, so I may check back in later.

Dinner w/ basecadet, DoktaP, steve8 (Biff's, Toronto, Canada): Not decanted. Poured into shoulder and allowed to breathe for 3 hours. Opaque dark ruby/black colour. Huge nose of vanilla, black cherry, black licorice, and hints of caramel and black plums. Quite brooding. Medium-full bodied, plenty of acidity and tannins. Opened with the Ardito’s by the pool the bottle had a defective cork, it cracked almost in half. We decanted for 1 hour, the wine is very rich with a deep blackish red color, we tasted vanilla, and mocha the nose was chocolaty. I wish I had more so I could keep it in the cellar for a year or two.

Rubi color, not very intense or dark. Very elegant and complex nose showing sour cherries covered with caramel. Some tobaco notes mixed with sage and rosemary. Decanted for 1.5hrs. Very dark cranberry/blackish color. Gorgeous floral nose of berries, cherries and chocolate with a bit of a mineral background. Medium/full bodied the palate is similar to the nose with a bit of currant and leather thrown into the mix. Very nicely balanced showing the slightest bit of firming tannins that I bet another hour or two of decanting would of smooth out. Drinking wonderful now but I see this wine having enough of the right stuff not to rush it out of the cellar. This is why I love Brunello....BRAVO! 92

Defective cork. Super dry at top, cracked almost in two half-way down and completely saturated below the cork. Didn't know how it would turn out, so decanted anyway for about 4 hours. Glad I got to it now...wasn't completely spoiled but my notes were nothing like those from others below. Tight and not very giving on the nose, not much of anything. Sour on the palate, without much fruit at all. Thought it might have been one of those 'classically styled' Brunellos, but other notes don't reflect that. I've got one more that I'm going to try soon, as if this is as good as other make it out to be for $30, it should be a good value Brunello. Also, btw, this was my first wine from "winestilsoldout", so I don't know the quality of the provenance...

Double decanted 8 hours before serving, than placed in a narrow-bottom decanter for an additional 90 minutes. Initially muted nose, with time opening to reveal dark fruits, earthy coffee grounds and an intriguing dried flower potpourri. Big and surprisingly round on the palate with concentrated sweet cherry, plum, earth, a touch of something bitter -- maybe dark chocolate. Low acidity, with partly resolved tannins that caress the tongue. Internationally styled, but still very tasty. Continued to unfold and improve through the last glass.

Early nose was black walnut, with little fruit overtones. After 90 min most of the walnut gave way to more red fruit. Deep purple with a satiny mix of lavendar, leather, rasberry, and earthy shroom. Still needs some time which should integrate the finish.

[BFMS] Not decanted, drank over 3 hours. Started overwhelmingly earthy with mushroom and leather on the nose and palate. After ~1.5 hours mor restrained earth on the nose, on the palate more modern qualites, plum, coffee, chocolate, mushroom, very thick and rich. At the end of the bottle, become a little more femine and restrained with plum and spearmint. Overall a very enjoyable wine. KAB loved it. Bought a couple more. Drinking nicely now but need 2 hrs decanting; will improve with time.

Purchased at an Italian restaurant; This Brunello had raspberries, spices and florals on the nose. There was still some oak present in the midpalate along with red fruits. It had a great long finish with violets and spices. There was some hollowness in the midpalate that kept the score down. Otherwise it is quite a good Brunello that should drink well younger than other vintages. [~$50 if purchased now; Decanted and at a good serving temperature which improved the wine over the course of the dinner]

This wine was poured at the Wine Spectator Las Vegas Grand Tour earlier this month. This was one of the standout wines of this event for me. I did not expect much from this 2000 vintage wine so I was pleasantly surprised. Full bodied and in need of aging but showing great promise now. Powerful tannins. Notes of plum, cassis and richly textured. Great full mouth feel on the finish. 94+ points.

Italian Wines to Celebrate the Holiday Season (Ross's Condo, New Orleans): We had two bottles of this side by side - the first was opened and decanted for 90 minutes. The second was popped and poured.

Opened and poured: dark ruby; strong but lifted cherry, blackberry, vanilla; full bodied; medium(-) acidity; high grapey tannin; doesn't fill out on the palate as much as promised by the nose; medium length.

Medium-dark ruby color. Very masculine nose of cedar, cherries, and tobacco. The palate is very solid, rather than exceptional. It has good balance, and a confident character. Moderate length, pleasant finish.

Debauchery on the Island: Popped and poured. Great brunello character. Nose of sour cherry, tobacco, tar, earth. On the palate, sour cherry, dried cherry, tobacco, a little mineral. Finishes long with a nice tanic grip. At $35 this was an aceeptable value.

Similar notes as last time but was lacking some of the fruit and integration; therefore the lower score. Maybe an off bottle.

High-toned, fairly complex nose but a bit short on the midpalate and finish. Give this a few more years.

Drank this months ago so....don't remember much, good nose, less fruit than I expected. A little earthy but again, nothing to rave about. Tannin are good so it could last a while, need to decant longer than I was able to this night. I remember some of the other people drinking this loved it and had more insight into it in terms of what they tasted claiming drank fruit, tobacco, chocolate and dirt

Decanted 1+ hours. Dark fruit, sweet spices, earth and a hint of chocolate on the nose. Palate was well-balanced with sweet dark fruits, minerals, sweet oak and silky tannins. Slight chocolate finish. Continued to develop throughout the night in the glass.

I can sense from the reviews below that better things might emerge soon, so I may check back in later.

decanted for about an hour and then drank over the next two. the wine continually improved over this time. next time I will start drinking it after two hours. full bodied and heavy tannins at the start. excellent, classic brunello. nice fruit and a long finish. additional aging will certainly improve this. I'll try the next one in about a year.

Color: Dark cherry, but not inky
Nose: Cherries and chocolate
Palate: Berry, Plum with minerals in the background. Nice texture with a silky tannin finish
Not as hearty as other brunellos, more refined and thoroughly delicious.
Great QPR @ $33 per bottle (for a brunello)

Dinner w/ basecadet, DoktaP, steve8 (Biff's, Toronto, Canada): Not decanted. Poured into shoulder and allowed to breathe for 3 hours. Opaque dark ruby/black colour. Huge nose of vanilla, black cherry, black licorice, and hints of caramel and black plums. Quite brooding. Medium-full bodied, plenty of acidity and tannins. Shows notes of dark fruit and vanilla on the palate. Moderate finish, ~25-30s, with more dark fruit. Needs another 2-3 years in the cellar.

Tragic! Prematurely oxidized, presumably due to the extremely brittle and dried out cork in this bottle.

Rubi color, not very intense or dark. Very elegant and complex nose showing sour cherries covered with caramel. Some tobaco notes mixed with sage and rosemary. Fresh acidity, potent, round and seductive on the palate, very long finish. Giacomo Neri, the producer, believes this has another 5 years of evolution before reaching it´s plateau.

Brought to a BYOB restaurant to drink with friends. Popped and poured, and wish we could have let it aerate for some time. Bone dry and had a smokey old world taste profile with subtle cherry fruit in the background. Nice Acidty and balance went great with my Veal chop. Long dry finish. Could have been even better if it was given some more time to breate

Decanted 3 hours. Nice flower, warm earthy soil and berry aromas - almost like a garden in the summer. Smooth cherry and raspberry on the palate - finish is brief. WS gave this till 2020 - I'd drink up before 2010. Drinking well now, and with 2001s in the cellar, why hang on?

94+ points.
