95 Points

Saturday, March 20, 2021 - I had great fear that this would be dead after seeing the cork - there are less sludgy core samples in the Athabaskan tar sands. To our great delight this was not dead at all, despite the beginnings of some madeirized notes in the bouquet. And what a bouquet: a mix of blackberry, strawberry and cherry, cedar, dried tobacco, marmalade, Cremona mushrooms. The palate is significantly sweeter than the nose, dominated by red and dark berries, anise, and fig. Decanted and probably not necessary as there was a lot less sediment than I expected. However decanting did not hurt since I served immediately. Tannins are very present but of course also very soft. Acidity is still in the right place. A terrific mix of venerable and sour nose and surprisingly fresh and sweet palate that I have seldom encountered before. Wow.
Score: 95-96. Relative to expectations: +++
