I had great fear that this would be dead after seeing the cork - there are less sludgy core samples in the Athabaskan tar sands. To our great delight this was not dead at all, despite the beginnings of some madeirized notes in the bouquet. And what a bouquet: a mix of blackberry, strawberry and cherry, cedar, dried tobacco, marmalade, Cremona mushrooms. The palate is significantly sweeter than the nose, dominated by red and dark berries, anise, and fig. Decanted and probably not necessary as there was a lot less sediment than I expected. However decanting did not hurt since I served immediately. Tannins are very present but of course also very soft. Acidity is still in the right place. A terrific mix of venerable and sour nose and surprisingly fresh and sweet palate that I have seldom encountered before. Wow. Score: 95-96. Relative to expectations: +++

Compelling, riveting and just about perfect in every way. The wine combines power, sensuality, refined, soft tannins with an opulent nature. Here you find a cornucopia of secondary notes and a mouth-filling blast of ripe, sweet, earthy, smoky cassis and cigar wrapper seems to go on forever. Hang on to your best vintages of LMHB and as you can see, you will be amply rewarded.

Consumed at a dinner at Eleven Madison last night along with a '02 Mugnier Musigny. Must say this was the wine of the night. On the first whiff, this wine blows you away with a complex nose with a hint of underbrush. On the palate, the wine is elegant. Noble tannins holding up a beautiful balance of black fruits and a touch of wood and finish that holds your attention and grabs on to it. You don't feel eating anything with it and just want to engage the wine. One of those wines in your glass that you wish did not finish too quickly.. but is gone before you know it since you have been taking sips every few seconds!

A wonderful bottle of this wine which can often taste past its best to me but not here as the wine offers up incredibly deep and expressive flavors of creosote, campfire, road tar, prunes and smoky minerals. It possesses a roasted character in the best possible way and the texture is thick and oily and flows Over the tongue like a well-oiled Ferrari. The finish is borderline over-mature but it walks the line providing a stunningly complex array of mature Graves flavors that are indescribable. All agreed tonight that this was a mesmorizing bottle of aged Bordeaux. At Rarities, Ai Fiori, NYC.
