Wednesday, July 5, 2023 - There is a nice yeasty qualities that help elevate this beyond the austere expressions of many no dose wines. Raw white grape and not quite ripe apple expressions. This is a base 2019 bottling and it became quite instructive. People in the know have said there can be a marked greenness to the Champagnes from 2019. I let my first glass of this sit for a few minutes and got a green, slightly vegetal character on the nose quite clearly. It doesn't overwhelm the wine but if you take a sniff without swirling its unmistakable. The acidity is generous under a nice chalky character but the fruit expression just isn't generous enough to lift it over the negatives of the vintage. Interesting that they bolstered this with 6% Pinot Noir. I've liked this bottle in its extra brut form and have missed it in the SoCal market. I hope it makes a return behind better vintages.
