Friday, September 5, 2014 - Colour deep, dark, primary red. I know, it's infanticide. But I was keen to get an early idea of where this wine is going. A bit grumpy in the first hour after opening. A pungent bouquet emerged of dark cherries, blackberries and other dark fruits, damp earth and a little barnyard, showing some reduction (even after four hours open). On the second day the bouquet had moved more towards spicy dark plums with a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, rich flavours of dark cherries and dark plums dominate, with some bloody game meats and a hint of cherry cola. Plush with ripe, satiny texture, real concentration and intensity. The wine seems to show its old vines character (55 years average apparently). Good fruit weight, length and power, showing both the classical 2010 vintage character and the terroir. Relatively sweet tannins, with prominent and somewhat spiky acidity at the moment. Unsurprisingly, the wine really needs 5+ years minimum to integrate although it is approachable now with a couple of hours of decanting. I look forward to revisiting this wine in future years.
