Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - Lovely if restrained on the nose at first, this was not giving at all on the palate until I decanted it for about an hour in a narrow-neck carafe. Within about 20 minutes it was smelling better, and by the time we sat down for dinner it was outstanding. Tart cranberries and sweet cherries and floral notes mingled with a core of minerality and chalk, and the smell was mirrored in the mouth, with a slightly waxy mouthfeel that slowly faded away into a long, somewhat tannic finish. The end was rather grippy, while the mid-palate was sappy, making for a really pleasant experience. I was surprised at how open this was considering its youth. Compared to the 2009 (which I drank cases of), I'd say this is less round and more straight, but not in a bad way. The minerality really comes through whereas the 09 was more soft and bouncy.
