Sunday, January 15, 2006 - Minneapolis Dinner and Tasting - Chateauneuf, Bordeaux, and Burgundy (mainly) (J.P.'s in Minneapolis): Same bottle as Siggy's TN... I was impressed with this wine, but did not find it as youthful as did many at the table. Rather, I found it in what I would consider its middle age - with gorgeous secondary / early tertiary elements of forest floor and smoke entering the picture. The tannins, too, seem more supple than would have been the case with a younger Burgundy - especially a Grand Cru from Leroy! I love drinking Burgundy in this phase - when it's still holding some of the pure fruit of its youth (in this case, red cherry), yet game and other mature elements are starting to creep in. For me, that's when these wines become truly great food wines - tonight, a terrific match with duck breast and duck confit. I'm sure this wine will last for quite a long time in a cool cellar, gaining a more velvety mouthfeel and developing more in the way of sous-bois / mushrooms in time. I remember one of Leroy's '72 Gevrey-Chambertin 1ers Crus a few years back that had a texture and array of aromas and flavors that can only come with extended cellaring. That will be the case one day with this superb wine as well... Thanks again, Brad!
