Two 91 Clos de la Roche side by side; Leroy and Dujac. Both were in the very good category, but not great. I preferred the Leroy, mostly a stylistic preference, but the table seemed split. A tough night to be a "very good" wine, as we danced with perfection a few times this evening.

La Paulée de SF Gala Dinner (Fairmont Hotel, SF CA): Huge nose with layers of black cherry with earth/tar notes and loads of spice. This packed with almost creamy, round fruit with intense spice notes. Big flavor crescendo in the finish.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Small glass, brief note. Rich red and black cherry with meaty character. Plenty of spice, giving a classically Leroy style. Age appropriate level of maturity. Slightly austere acid-driven finish detracted from the overall enjoyment.

Burgundy dinner at Grace (Grace Chicago): Very similar to the bottle I had earlier this year. Remarkably youthful. Outstanding red and black fruit and wonderful spice. Not terribly nuanced but a great full on Leroy experience.

Great Burgundy Dinner (Grace - Chicago IL): Served single blind in Leroy CdlR flight, we weren't certain after unveiling which was the 1991 and which the 1992. But past experience and comparing wine in glass vs remaining wine in the 1992 bottle made me 95% confident this was the 1991. Very large scaled wine with somewhat flamboyant red and black fruit on nose and palate. Great aromas, incredibly enticing, followed by good flavors. Lots of pleasure throughout, but not the most complex Domaine Leroy wine.

Very expressive nose to start with. Though as the bottle sat open for an hour, the nose faded a bit. However, the minerality on the finish was long. Not your typical Clos de la Roche, does not have the fruit and stuffing. There is more terroir expression through the mineral-infused finish and refreshing acidity than there is pinot in here.

Absolutely wonderful nose of mature red fruit, some dark fruit, cedar and signature Leroy spice. That said, the nose was not as forward on the spice as the typical Leroy and was very well integrated with the fruit. Nice secondary notes of minerals, iron and earth. Beautiful weight and grip on the mouth. Long finish.

Opened and decanted about 45 minutes before serving. Ripe, darker red berry fruit with incredible floral tones as well. Cranberry and a touch of earth too. Quite concentrated and rich on the palate. Medium plus body and a very long, seamless finish. Fantastic!

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Served double blind. Popped, decanted and poured. Very tough wine to assess. Clearly a high end Grand Cru Burgundy, but this started with a musty aromatic element that never went away in the time we had to try (and re-try) this wine. Mature ripe fruit with lots of concentration. I didn't find any of the telltale Leroy perfumed spice character, but this started showing power and nuance after 45 minutes. I own one bottle and would decant for an hour+ if opened any time soon.

This bottle (222 of 878) was a beautiful wine demonstrating both the terroir of Clos de la Roche & the concentrated style of Leroy. It was drinking perfectly, but should last for a few more years. Drunk next to '91 Dujac CdR and Clos St Denis. On any other night he Dujacs would have stood lone, but the Leroy was the best of the three Morey wines served on this night. I believe the Burghound must have had off bottles as this wine would merit a score in the low-mid 90s as it was outstanding.

Bottle quality perfect. A really good bottle of juice. This bottle had more ripeness (almost 1990) than previous bottles (including one the prior night). Outshined by the 91 Rousseau Chambertin drunk side by side, but always a welcome addition to any tasting. And I respectfully disagree with Burghounds assessment of this wine.

Minneapolis Dinner and Tasting - Chateauneuf, Bordeaux, and Burgundy (mainly) (J.P.'s in Minneapolis): Same bottle as Siggy's TN... I was impressed with this wine, but did not find it as youthful as did many at the table. Rather, I found it in what I would consider its middle age - with gorgeous secondary / early tertiary elements of forest floor and smoke entering the picture. The tannins, too, seem more supple than would have been the case with a younger Burgundy - especially a Grand Cru from Leroy! I love drinking Burgundy in this phase - when it's still holding some of the pure fruit of its youth (in this case, red cherry), yet game and other mature elements are starting to creep in. For me, that's when these wines become truly great food wines - tonight, a terrific match with duck breast and duck confit. I'm sure this wine will last for quite a long time in a cool cellar, gaining a more velvety mouthfeel and developing more in the way of sous-bois / mushrooms in time. I remember one of Leroy's '72 Gevrey-Chambertin 1ers Crus a few years back that had a texture and array of aromas and flavors that can only come with extended cellaring. That will be the case one day with this superb wine as well... Thanks again, Brad!

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): In 91/96/98 vertical. Juxtaposing classic Leroy perfume with black and red cherry and roasted meat. Silky and elegant textures with great weight. By far the best bottle of this wine I have ever had.

The ’91 Leroy was an amazing wine. There were so many flavors in the nose. It was mouth coating and well balanced, without being heavy.

Tasting Group Dinner - Old World Wines (JP's American Bistro, Minneapolis): Deep maroon/ruby with no bricking. Knockout nose of cedar and minerals. Deep and earthy, superbly balanced, with a long finish. Tasted like a 5-year old wine. WOTF for me.
