84 Points

Sunday, December 20, 2009 - Low color intensity, ruby, low extraction rim. On the nose (after an hour or two in the decanter) somewhat one dimensional at present with red and dark primary fruit, some vegetal notes, some soily/stony minerality, hint of florality. Very high acidity, not real broad in the midpalate for pinot, a fine transition into a smooth, moderate + amount of moderate - ripe tannin finish, low ETOH. Good balance though a bit on the firm side, good length at about 20-30 sec, moderate - intensity and complexity. Certainly a very finesseful wine with a fine texture, more Mugnier than NSG (given blind it would be tough to eliminate Alsace, Ger, or Loire PN based on lack of tannin ripeness, low barrique influence). It has already been said, but if you want fleshy and full, ripe tannin pinot avoid 04 Burgundy... I think this wine will soften a bit and improve over the next 1-3 years but doesn't have the depth of fruit to go much longer... very good to excellent 04 Burg, good to very good wine, average Mugnier.
