first bottle in 15 years, this wine was really nice, no issues with green, although it was very forest and leaves. it has matured, and was nice with roast chicken, you tasted freddy in the lightness with intensity… however i am not sure i see value. no hurry to drink my bottles.

Clos de la Marechale Vertical (Decatur, GA): Duller red with rusty rim; beef broth nose with powerful green and iron notes, lots of clay, sanguine, dried roses, getting greener with air initially but something suggests this may improve with extended aeration.

Not sure about the tasting notes before this. When I bought these, they were the greenest 2004 red burgs I had ever tasted. I saved 1 bottle for a Marechale vertical, which took place yesterday, all vintages from 2004-2019 and a '76 and '85 from Faiveley along with '10 and '15 whites. While the greenness did decrease significantly with time, it was still present and was actually not the worst aspect. This wine was thin, a bit acidic, disjointed and not pleasant fruit. Overall, among the worst 2 of the vertical. Sorry, Freddy.

Pop and pour. Nose of matchstick, truffle, cherry, cranberry and earth. Flavors of mushroom, cherry, cranberry, earth and bit of iron. Ends with 30-35 finish.

Started off a little primary but open, Has nice Marion berry and herbal components. Secondary leather and basque herbs quickly start showing. After 2 hours some strong tannins start showing making me think this wine will hold longer even thought it is showing well now.

Opened as a tribute to Becky Wasserman. The greenie meanies have pretty much gone, only a faint pine needle meets oregano note. Black raspberry, black tea, a little smoke and the herbal note. Very nice wine but seems like time to drink up. B+

Consistently good so far. 1 hour to open up and maintains for 3-4 hours after. Really enjoy the pure cool and fresh aromas of perfume and cherries. Well integrated tannins makes this a real pleasure to drink particularly at the current price.

Bottle breathe for 1.5 hours (without pouring out any juice). Obvious nose with red fruit and some flowers. The palate is medium weight with fruit, iron and a bit earthy. More complexity offered by waiting for another 30-40 min with tea, mineral and rust. Medium finishing.

Light crimson in color. 13% ABV. Red fruits, forest floor and iron on the nose. Medium body with a nice amount of acidity. There is a pronounced earthy, soil element to the wine but there is enough fruit to keep this compelling. Cherries, black tea, blood and soil on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Certainly a difficult vintage but this wine has stood the test of time. Rustic and earthy but imminently enjoyable. Best over the next several years.

NSG 1er Cru South (Chicago, IL): Single blind and easy to spot as the 2004. Decidedly herby and green-tinged red fruit aromas. The palate is light bodied with pronounced green notes and bitter structure. My least favorite - some preferred this to the 2006, which was surprising to me, but says a lot about the 2006.

Very nice, with lots of red and black fruit, earthy forest floor, some damp floral notes and, yes, after the bottle was almost empty, just a hint of some green herbal, vegetal notes emerged, somewhat reminiscent of leafy tobacco I smelled a few times where cigars were being hand rolled. Overall, a very pleasant bottle by which to open presents.

There was surprisingly fresh red and black fruit on the nose, along with earthy notes and subtle oak influence. The fruit is acceptably ripe, the acidity is high and there is still a good amount of tannins on the finish. This is enjoyable, although the balance is not perfect.

2004 is one of the worst vintages for red Burgundy in the last 2 decades, many 2004 red Burgundies are vegetal and have been maturing in an unappealing way. Tasted blind – Maturing array of dark cherries, meaty undergrowth, green stems and hints of cabbage. Light bodied but tannins are austere. Weak vintage? 1994? Rhone CdP? Fonsalite? (66/100)
Light red in color. 13% ABV. Pristine nose of red fruits, damp forest floor and flowers. Medium body with strong acidity. No noticeable green flavors often associated with the '04 vintage. Strawberry, cherry, rhubarb, spice and soil on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Elegant, regal Burgundy that is showing well at fifteen years of age. I have several bottles left that I will track over the next 3-5 years.

Again, drank much better than I expected. Mid red colour with lots of depth, almost opaque, just like the previous bottle. Subdued red fruit on the nose with hints of barn yard and earthy notes. The palate is rich with no notable tannins. The richness leads to a decent finish. Very enjoyable now.

From a vertical of Mugnier's Marechal 2004 to 2016. Light in colour, classic nose of cherries, strawberries and a clear streak of dryness and red peppers. Medium body, high acidity, quite dry and astringent in the first part of the tasting curve. Some red berries at the end, but the green tones soon dominates. Not very impressing, but then this was a difficult vintage. Has probably been better, but has not evolved positively.

Very nice Burgundy (from a discussed year). If you want you can smell some underripe tones. But there's also a great fruity fragrance and spices. I like the freshness and bitternesss. Enough fruit and a very good effort for this vintage.

Fading a little - light red. Fragrant red fruit nose - raspberries and red currants. More Brett, forest floor flavours on the palate with some sweet fruit remaining. Less disjointed that I remember. Long sweet finish. Pleasurable.

The nose was initially vegetal and earthy. After some air time the nose becomes well balanced, with some spice and subtle oak. On the palate the acidity at times dominates the well integrated tannins. A good, enjoyable wine.

Maturing red berries with earth and some forest floor. Just faint green hints on finish, not really noticeable when popped-and-poured, but starting to emerge once the bottle was open an hour+. Very pleasant bottle of wine, particularly for Mugnier's first vintage taking back the Monopole.

Nothing that stands out as absolutely amazing about this bottle other than it delivers where it needs to. Slightly browning meniscus but otherwise transparent ruby. Clean and lean mineral driven aromatics with some earthy tones starting to really come to the fore. Nicely lifted palate of cranberry and minerals, a light mid-palate that moves seamlessly to a clean and balanced--if a bit short--finish. A delicately balanced purely burgundian experience. There is no other place in the world that could deliver this. And it is a pleasure. Not earth shattering, but exactly as it should be.

Unlike my previous bottle from the same purchase, this bottle demonstrated the strong green streak on the nose and palate. There was clearly great fruit texture underneath the green, but it was hard to enjoy.

The greenness in this bottle was a little overpowering. Red fruit on the nose and some underlying signs of a solid wine however. Unclear if further age would improve it, however will leave the remaining bottles to see if the greenness fades.

Quite green on both the palate and nose. Slight but elegant cherries and light red fruits on the nose. Extremely elegant, silky and velvety. The light perfumed red cherries and svelte wine glides seamlessly from the entry all the way to the finish. There is some greenness between the mid palate and finish and the entry. Bar the greenness, this would actually make for a extremely good wine.

I have been following this wine since it's release and it has improved significantly over the past decade. After several hours of air this is a elegant earthy and well balanced wine calls me back for more sips. Yes the 2004 vintage does show with slightly under-ripe flavors but now everything is in harmony and it is drinking beautifully. Like a refined lady this light body wine displays well integrated acids with red fruits and is very enjoyable. The finish is only moderately complex and does not have the depth of fruit in the middle as most of Mugnier's wines do but still I keep coming back for more. Not as good as the 2005-2010 vintages for this producer but nevertheless a lovely example of what is possible in 2004.

Talk about expectations. First, there's the green meanie reputation of 2004 burgundy reds. I've had some very nasty, green "04s so I'm nervous. On the other hand, Mugnier has a reputation of excellence even in difficult vintages.
This was simply a great red burg. Translucent light red in the glass and on the nose soaring fruit, spice and some earth notes - no bell pepper. The palate amps things up a bit further. It's hard to imagine a wine this light in colour with such density. Very pure too. A long finish is marked with some biting acidity. Basically, as nice as this was, it needs another 5 years. Thankfully, no green meanies to worry about if this bottle is the prototype.

A long lunch at Helen's place (Martinborough, NZ): The wine had a lovely spicy, savoury nose. Again, the winemakers were detecting brett, I was just seeing as sous bois and savoury complexity. But there was also some herby green tinges on the nose. An interesting wine on palate with some complexity of flavour, including some greenness, but not to a level I found off-putting. The wine had serious fruit weight and a dense mid palate. I thought that the acids were a little out of balance. Larry had the wine as a powerful Grand Cru. However, for this esteemed label, I thought this was a slightly disappointing showing. Perhaps, with more time, it will improve?

Drinking better than I expected. Mid red colour with lots of depth, almost opaque. Nose of earth, leather, barn yard and ripe red cherry. The palate adds more mineral complexity and decent balanced finish. Tannins are ripe and buried in the fruit. Very nice package now. (91+)

Great drinking now. The green has evolved into something more along the lines of sous bois which is what I expected. Texturally very elegant in a Chambolle Musigny way being a lighter Mugnier style. Very well liked by a group of non-wine geek people.

While I’m not especially pyrazine sensitive, I had found a bottle of this a couple years ago to be seriously flawed by greenie meanies. But decided to bring one and give it a shot. Surprised, there’s some light pine needle and herb notes here, but nothing like what I remembered. Black cherries, smoke, oregano. Medium acids, tannins receding. Pleasant if not profound. B

Clos de la Maréchale vertical tasting with Frédéric Mugnier as the host. A tricky vintage, with few highlights 2004. This however is a much better wine than one would anticipate. First vintage of this wine from Frédéric. This vineyard was leased by Domaine Faiveley from Domaine Mugnier between 1953 up until 2003, so Frédéric just got it back for the 2004 vintage, and had the first chance to get acquaint with it. This is a monopole holding, even if Frédéric has chosen not put the “Monopole” text on the label. Could have had better conditions to start with, than 2004 I guess. Still, the result is really solid, better than average for the vintage, and this is all but a bad wine I must say. It has the typical green and herbal characteristics of 2004, with some earthiness, quite good acidity, with some sour red berries and some green asparagus. A little bit hollow in the middle, but still a very nice 2004, and fun to try the first vintage tonight, with Frédéric sitting next to me at the table. The wine will continue to improve, so nu rush drinking the bottles in the cellar, if you have any. this might end with a bige surprise in a few years? 89+

initial tart fruits hit the palate but the real strength is when you appreciate the midpalate fruit intensity. lot of bramble berry of all types on the long acidic finish. Good minerality appreciated, and overall a very clean tart fruit forward wine. Not a blockbuster, but a very compelling style of wine and a charming red burgundy at that. Recommended

Mini Boys Night (Reno, NV): The last bottle of this for me... it continues to flesh out and get better... still has the hallmarks of the 04 vintage = a bit lean, a bit green, very transparent and clear aromas and flavors... still has the hallmarks of a Mugnier wine = light in appearance, delicate in aroma, plenty of depth on the palate. If I had more of this I would wait a year and see if it continues to improve (as it puts on flesh the wine's balance improves as the added palate weight helps with the slight bit of green-ness). This bottle certainly had the depth of flavor, balance, and acidity/tannins to hold for 2-4. A lot to like in this wine.

This grew on me as it opened up over several hours. Medium ruby with paler rim, and initially the nose suggested more dried flowers and earthy notes, but later I picked up interesting tobacco and darker fruit as well. On the palate, it was medium bodied with initial fruit and touch of spice giving way to orange citrus tone on the finish. The balance was tipped in favor of the acidic finish instead of the fruit, but at least I didn't pick up any greenness in the wine. This seems like it is ready to drink now with a little air time first.

Lean red raspberry and strawberry aromas to start with just some spice hints. Same fruit profile on palate with background spice. Fruit seems to have thinned out rather than picked up weight with time in bottle. Some trace hints of 2004 green character on finish. Drink up.

Very pretty and expressive from the word go. There are aromas of violets, earth, red fruits and just a hint of pepper. It is sweet and ethereal laden with crunchy red fruits in the mouth and possessing a fine boned mineral structure. It finishes with good cut and has excellent rocky detail. There were some keen wine drinkers at our table who to a man thought this was absolutely delicious red Burgundy.

Charming red fruit remains the most expressive part of this wine with some dried herb and spice coming through more in flavor than smell. Very elegant and balanced wine with really good minerality and acidity. The 2004 touch of green is unfortunately impossible to miss on the finish. There was also a faint hint of rot that started coming through on the nose after open an hour, which I'm hoping is bottle-specific.

Quite pale in color. Fairly unappealing nose showing an odd green note and perfumed oak but also some development. The palate is a bit underfruited, but there's also a good bit to like here. I find the elegant weightlessness and pure, polished structure very attractive (if not particularly Nuits). I think this only needs another couple of years before it's ready to go. Certainly a whiff at full retail, but worthy of consideration at closeout pricing.

Nice nose of cherries and minerals. Best upon opening with lovely spicy cherry fruit and a smooth, fleshy texture. Medium-bodied and fairly austere with a very minerally, taught finish. Dries out some after being open an hour or so. Hard to tell where this wine is going but it's nice, authentic cherry/mineral Burgundy.

WGS: Mugnier (Hilton Hotel Singapore): Hits first with chinese boiled herbal medicine, gingseng roots, dried bark and balanced off with sweet pretty lovely florals. On the palate, still roots, herbs cocooned around focused briary fruits. It does taste austere and backward and herbaceously but this must be one of the most elegant and floral NSG I have ever encountered. The bitter ending reminds me of the gingseng roots herb tea my aunt makes. Comparing with the whole range of Mugniers, this really is the most expressive of them and stands out for being outspoken. Not easy to love but I'm kinda loving it.

Very open and expressive, with some development on the nose - autumn leaves, old wood and a little tea nuance. Well structured yet with very silky and velvety mouthfeel, though the whole package comes across a little bold and masculine. Not quite exactly what I would look for in Mugnier wines. Still its delicious and supple.

Domaine JF Mugnier Tasting (Hilton Hotel, Singapore): Started off really rather well, but the 2004 herbiness really became slightly overwhelming with time. Still though, I thought this was a good wine. Nose was rather more reserved than the 2006, especially in its fruit expression. It still had that nice meatiness and a dark fruit counterpoint, but there was a bit more of that sauvage animale tone, along with plenty of herbal top notes - tree bark, angelica root, ginseng - that just seemed to grow and grow in the glass. Palate was rich and powerful, with good concentration and depth of dark fruit - black cherries, cassis et al - tailing away into a touch of orange peel. Very masculine too, in that the power of the fruit was wed to plumply ripe tannins. Just not quite the fineness of bone structure that the 2006 had I thought. Finish was long and spicy, with some snappy fruit and a hint of bloody, iron mineral. I thought the herbiness had receded after the whiffs on the nose. Unfortunately, they came back rather with a vengeance as the wine sat in the glass, especially in the finish, which was really fulll of ginseng notes. There was a bit of bitterness right at the back-end too that I found just a little distracting. Great if you like your 2004s, but after the last few bottles, they really do not seem to be shedding their stalkiness in the way the 2001s very quickly did. Still though, this was a nice bottle as far as 2004 wines go.

Low color intensity, ruby, low extraction rim. On the nose (after an hour or two in the decanter) somewhat one dimensional at present with red and dark primary fruit, some vegetal notes, some soily/stony minerality, hint of florality. Very high acidity, not real broad in the midpalate for pinot, a fine transition into a smooth, moderate + amount of moderate - ripe tannin finish, low ETOH. Good balance though a bit on the firm side, good length at about 20-30 sec, moderate - intensity and complexity. Certainly a very finesseful wine with a fine texture, more Mugnier than NSG (given blind it would be tough to eliminate Alsace, Ger, or Loire PN based on lack of tannin ripeness, low barrique influence). It has already been said, but if you want fleshy and full, ripe tannin pinot avoid 04 Burgundy... I think this wine will soften a bit and improve over the next 1-3 years but doesn't have the depth of fruit to go much longer... very good to excellent 04 Burg, good to very good wine, average Mugnier.

I just purchased a couple more of these so I was feeling flush on them and was eager to see where this wine had gone since I tasted it a couple of years ago on release. Decanted for about 3.5 hours and served with New Yorks. I can see this wine being contoversial in the way that many 2004s are. The nose, especially early on, has some herbaciousness to it. Not so much green as herbal but as discussed ad infinitum that aromatic is in the eye of the beholder. There is a wealth of dark fruit, earthiness and black tea spice underneath that though and as time went on and the wine increasingly came up to temp those characteristics came more to the forefront. There is, to me, a deep sense of Nuits to this wine and the winemaking is impeccable. The fruit is very back-palate oriented with blackberry, soy, tar and coffee notes filling up the wine. The texture is terrific. Smooth as silk on the entry and turning rough and tumble toward the back. The wine is definitely at lease somewhat clenched at this point and the sense of underlying energy is palpable. I think this is a terrific if not sexy bottle of wine that really has enormous potential down the road. If you are super-sensitive to the 2004 issue you won't like this wine. If not it is a tremendous Pinot and could be something truly special in 10 years. I would go 91 now with clear room for an upgrade.

When reading about this wine, I learned this was the first vintage Mugnier made of this vinyard after a 50-year lease to Faiveley. The combination of Nuits and 2004 promised a little "harshness", but this was only slightly the case. I guess, the Chambolle-genes of Mugnier did the trick. Though nice drinking now, I will leave the rest of the case to rest for another 2 to 3 years, I guess it will improve, soften up a little more. Nevertheless, already now good integration and balance. Not very long, but good enough.

Loaded with TPCTSNRDL, tonic water, dried flowers, mirepoix, raspberries, pomegranate and earth. In the mouth it is crisp and detailed, with fine yet prevalent acidity and a thinness that should plump out with bottle age. There’s a lovely base of earth and slight quinine bitterness to the finish. If you don’t like the general attributes of 04 this ‘aint’ for you. I like it and think it will be very smart given another 5-8 years in the cellar.

On the nose are aromas of subtle woodsmoke, black cherry, a bit of raspberry, a touch of the greeny character that this vintage seems to have, and after some air more earth and spice was revealed. The palate has very nice red fruit, good tart acidity and medium tannin that provides some grip. I noticed a bit of bitterness on the medium length finish that I'm not a huge fan of. Very good, and an interesting wine that I think might be coaxed out a little more with the right food.

well, on day 2 all the stemminess went away and left a beautiful, complex glass of wine. the fruit did a nice two-step with balanced minerals and earthiness.

On the nose, plum and dark cherry; cherry on the palate. Quite light and elegant -- nothing rustic here. To my taste more a sense of ripe fruit, not really green, not oaky, pleasantly snappy with acid. Closed at first, definitely not all tannin resolved, but after half an hour much more open and complex, and quite a long finish. My sense is that it needs a few years yet and could well blossom into a delightful wine. However, this is not a drink for those who want more force than grace.
On night 2: Reticent nose at first, blossomed into plums and a smoky note, quite pleasant but somewhat reserved, and yes, there is a hint of something bitter in the far background. On the palate, definitely more full than the night before, but still light and elegant rather than lush or rustic, with much tannin gone, hints of plums and cherries, increased complexity, and an acid backbone that I found even more impressive than the first night. As with the nose, in the background a quite slight bitter note -- perhaps a deal buster for some, but I find no lack of fruit, nobility, or interest. I suspect this will last for quite a while and just get better -- the color is still quite primary.

Opened to see where it was going. Very spicy nose with dried herbs and oregano and cherry. A little short at first, it became fuller and with a longer finish with a little bit of time. Mild to fresh acidity, med body, it is balanced and elegant but a little simple right now with earthy and cherry notes with spices (again dry herbs). To revisit in 4-5 years and then to drink over the short term.

from .375. This wine has been all over the map for me over the last 2 years- this is the first bottle that's been good from start to finish- smoky plums on the nose- the palate is a touch light- definitely on the elegant side of NSG- solid wine- interesting to see how much of the anger this has shed in the past 9 months.

Opened and consumed over 5+ hours. Deep ruby/garnet color. Started out with sour cherry aromas and flavors with a hint of earth. With air, it gains weight and complexity. Aromas of reaspberry, balck cherry, spice, earth and violets. Flavors of black cherry, underbrush, spice and anise, ending with a subtle earthiness. 91+.

nose: tart nose with sweet red fruits, bits of crushed rocks, chalk tones, along with some earthen tones and bits of spices. Nice and balanced aromas, but doesn't have that classic nuits st georges rusticity
taste: good smooth feel with tones of sweet red fruits, spices, earthen tones, and a slight bit of the greenies that have been a problem in the 04s poke through a slight bit
overall: a very nice burg, but doesn't scream nuits st georges to me which is a slight problem. There is a good tartness to this with atractive aromas and flavors with medium+ acidity. Polished and elegant, this could use a couple more years to get ready, but with some air this is fine right now, though it does lack a slight bit of depth that some extra age would help with

the bottle was a lower fill with a bit of sticky wine residue, and so I decided an experiment was in order. Sure enough, the cork had two lines of red from the wine end to the capsule.
Adouzed for 1 and 1/2 hours, maybe needed more. Very pure dark cherry, earthy fruit on the nose.
The wine has lift and definition, clearly it is young and does not have all the complexity that will eventually show with time (i like older wine), it showed tarry, dirt, leaves and some leather, with some good length. Acids are in line. Sweetness. Never a huge NSG fan, I do love Mugnier.
I noticed no green meanies, and think this will only get better with time. A taste the next day out of a glass sitting on the table for the night showed the purity of the fruit. The acids stuck out a bit further, so I think cellaraing is needed for 5+ years.

After an incredible early morning of seven Dom Perignons in a technical tasting at the Post Hotel 2008 Wine Summit at Lake Louise in Alberta Canada, we had the distinct pleasure to enjoy eight beautiful Burgundys. Frederic Mugnier, General Manager at Domaine Jacques- Frederic Mugnier led us through this interesting tasting. Frederic was well prepared and knowledgeable though struggled with English. I can not criticize as I know fewer words in French than the number of languages he can speak. The 2004 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale was more red than purple. Not having experienced many red burgs I was not sure if that was normal. On the nose I got cherries and plum. There were strong tannins and it seemed very acidic which Frederic discussed. It was ok, but not over the top.

Tasting Notes Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier (The Wine Summit At Lake Louise 2008): Medium ruby colour; scented aromas – some pine needles – red plums; light bodid – harmonious; cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit flavours; acids showing – not much in the way of tannins; finishes quite light, but the aftertaste lingers, framing the freshness and fruit content.

Dark burgundian color. Nutty nose with red fruits on the nose and hint of greenness. Palate is balandce between red fruits and green stem. Sign of unripe fruits...finish is quite short and end with the traditional 04 green back palate.

Mugnier Tasting at World of Pinot Noir (Shell Beach, CA): Mugnier tasting. Mostly red fruit on the nose with some interesting floral charm. Blend of red and black cherry on palate, good length, good spice. Nicely balanced, not particularly powerful Just a trace of the 2004 green at the end. I liked this wine for the '04 vintage from the first time I tasted in 2006, and it keeps getting better. I will revisit my stash starting around 2010.

from .375. opened with a nose of intense green/ganja notes. Vacu-vined and refrigerated overnight. violets, brush and some smoke on the nose. The palate has considerable tension- a coiled spring with a velvet texture carrying soil and smoke notes along with rich cherry fruit. Very good.

Seattle Burgundy Group Tasting #1 -- Nuits St. Georges (Seattle): Like the Fourches without the forceful expression, and considerably danker. Mr Cyril Zagat noted "bio/barrel aromas." Musty as well in the mouth, but maybe the most minerally of all eleven NSGs tonight, and perhaps showing the most promise for evolution. If...shrillness does not increase. James Zagat said he's "had better from this bottling." Frederic Mugnier notes that he has gone from one to nine vineyard workers having added this family vineyard of some 10 ha; has stopped using herbicides; begin picking on 23.09; had higher sugars (!) in 2004 than in 1990, 1997, 2000, and 2003; and finds his 2004s more tannic than his 2002s and capable of lasting 20 years, according to Alan Meadows, who bestowed 89-91 points.

over 2 nights, from .375. Upon opening, this is just flat out angry. Very high acid, lean and mean. It slowly opens up and reveals tremendous energy- tautly wound around a core of lovely black fruit. On night 2, this is flat out terrific- lush, pure cherry fruit, a hints of smoke and underbrush. similar in my mind to mugneret's chaignots in the elegant approach to NSG.

Mugnier Dinner (The Ledbury, London): This had the characteristic 2004 greenness that people are talking about and which I hadn't come across until now. Stalky, celery nose, on the palate enough sweet puppy fat fruit to balance it out. M Mugnier himself said that it was fresh, lively with an acidity that added vibrancy.

In the minority here, I believe. Drunk four times over the last month with consistent notes. Lightly colored, transparent ruby. Nice nose of ripe cherries and earth. Medium bodied on the palate with some decent persistence and refreshing acidity. Finish is where it puts me off - a very strong sense of dusty green bell pepper. It is a finish that I have noted in most (all?) 04 Burgs incl more pedestrian wines up to some Grand Crus - hallmark of the vintage I am sure but this was the wine where I found it most objectionable. Won't re-try for 3 years.

Drank from half-bottle. Nose of concentrated black cherry fruit with a little bit of spice. On the palate this just oozes class, with a velvety mouthfeel, superb balance and a long finish. A beautiful effort that is well worth seeking out.

Good color. Classic Pinot nose of crushed cherries, cardboard and a bit of horse leather and barnyard. Quite fresh and juicy with good depth of cherry fruit flavors. Finishes fairly tight with good acidity and a firm structure but this wine has a really nice cut of cherry fruit that is really tasty and can be drunk now but clearly should improve over the next couple of years. Suprisingly good despite the vintage being generally passed by.

"What did I buy from Garagiste?!?" third semi-annual tasting and dinner (My home - Chicago IL): Tasting. I included this in the tasting because it’s the first time the wine is being made by Mugnier (Marechale’s owner) who took back the lease from Faiveley for the 2004 vintage. I’ve never been a big Marechale fan and 2004 is my least favorite Burgundy vintage in a decade…but this wine is a success. Not quite a “90 point” wine but close. Good black fruit, very forward and fresh. Nicely balanced and accessible but the tannins retain the green edge characteristic of the vintage, particularly in NSG. I doubt this is a long-term ager but it drinks nicely now. Better with food than on its own.

Certainly a whiff at full retail, but worthy of consideration at closeout pricing.

I suspect this will last for quite a while and just get better -- the color is still quite primary.

overall: a very nice burg, but doesn't scream nuits st georges to me which is a slight problem.

Nose of mint, tar, black fruit, smoke, strawberries, earth .. experienced at a rushed tasting of other 1er Crus under less than ideal circumstances.

Martin Scott Wines Portfolio Event (New York City): Medium ruby color. Nose of blackberry, raspberry, tar and mineral notes. A bit thin on the palate, however.
