1977 Dow Porto Vintage

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

92 Points

Friday, November 27, 2015 - Note: This wine was open and decanted 24 hours prior to drinking.

Color: Light to Medium mature ruby red in appearance. Does not look especially deep or thick relative to other ports I have had in the past. Still looks moderately youthful for a 38 year old wine.

Nose: Aromatic in a large Burgundy glass. Not as fragrant in respect to the 1970 Graham I had last year but the but the perfumed port nuances come through nicely but are not particularly strong or overpowering.

Taste after 24 hours: Medium body with a sweet finish. Tannins and fruit are well balanced and this seems ready to go and will likely improve over the next 10+ years. This is a very nice wine and a pleasant drink today but the 77 Fonseca has more elegance and depth of fruit and the 85 Graham has better structure and a more intense middle plate for a relative comparison. I like the purity and sweet finish of this Dow and would rate it very good but falling short of excellent. This is a lighter style of vintage port. Will see how it does tomorrow but right now I would give it 92 points at most.

Taste after 48 hours: Noticeably better today with more body and texture in the middle. This will never be a heavyweight champion but rather a good middle weight with limited depth. The finish has moderate length and complexity. I think for a few more dollars I would rather buy a Taylor, Fonseca or Graham vintage port from a good year. I normally only drink port in the winter at holiday time and I really want something special. This is a fine port but it does not necessarily encourage me to purchase more. Definitely a nice drinker today but in the future I will stick to the blue chips.
