Sunday, May 23, 2021 - 3rd day of the '21 Wine-o-palooza.....only 4 contestants left. Jen opened this one from her cellar as a birth year wine since she is the birthing person for her 18 yo....

A little bit of an odd nose on the pnp but over 3-4 hours in the decanter it evens out and over 2+ hours more it grows on you and struts its stuff. Competes fairly and squarely with the '03 Cos d' Estournel that I brought for the occasion til about the 7th hour of decant when the Cos pulls ever so slightly ahead.......soft cherry fruit, leather, tobacco and cassis. As time wears on, sneaky tannins start to show up late to the party, low to moderate intensity, but integrating well with the fruit and the acidity. A little tart cherry initially it evolves into more dark red/black fruit later. Maybe a little pine needle late, too? I think DJHammond covers this wine perfectly in his note from the other day. A screaming buy at this price.

5/29/2021 8:23:00 AM - Lol......I had a separate vrate in the cellar that I had your wines in for the trip a month ahead of time...I actually changed them out 3-4 times before settling on the ones I brought up. Doing the same with the wines for J's trip now!...and I've got more/different '03s I can bring in October, too. Looking forward to the Lascombes.

5/30/2021 5:52:00 AM - Although I am more used to reading your notes on bottles from Carter Cellars, Myriad and the Realm (one of the few US cabs in this price range that can be found in Switzerland), I enjoyed your comment on Sociando 2003. Did you drink from a bottle or magnum? Cheers

5/30/2021 8:41:00 AM - bsinclair, this was from a 750 that Jen opened for us during our big wine weekend gala. I had not had this producer previously and was very pleasantly surprised. For the first few hours it was ahead of the '03 Cos in my estimation. I would buy a few more of these if I come across them as I am down to my last one of my other '03s like Cos, Poyferre and Pape Clement. This has turned out to be a great vintage for my palate. Cheers, my friend!
