Friday, March 23, 2007 - I've always had a weakness for this Chateau as its 1989 was one of the first whole cases I ever purchased. I keep waiting for its cru bourgeois magic to return. After reading the encouraging BWE notes about this vintage, I gave it a whirl... A very purple color, more mauve than black. Fairly tight, hard to evaluate. Certainly, it seems balanced and it has good fruit and depth, but everything is somewhat muted. Very black currant in profile, avoid the cloying qualities of many 2003s. The tannins are thick and so ripe that they are hard to identify as tannins- I think this is a trait of Left Bank in this vintage--abundant but ripe, lush tannins. Reminds me a lot of the Lilian-Ladouys 2003 with a bit more class perhaps. I like this wine, but don't think it's worth the price, unless it can be found in the low $20s. B
