Saturday, May 22, 2021 - Decanted at 6:30pm and tasted over 5 hours with some left for a later date. Dark, nearly opaque garnet color with little to no sign of age. At first the nose was full of tarry and oak derived scents like vanilla and some char/smoke but this gave way over the first couple hours to a much more nuanced and perfumed nose. Lilacs, plum, licorice, cherry, baking spices and pipe tobacco abound on the nose at hour 5. Palate still has some lightly grippy tannin, plenty of acidity for continued aging and is equally complex and evolving over time with air. Getting more complex and elegant as time went on. Finish is very long with an emphasis on the vanilla and plummy notes. This is a much different (and better) wine after several hours in the decanter. Great with grilled steaks.
