2012 Kata Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard

Community Tasting Note

Friday, March 17, 2017 - A dark and plush Cabernet-based blend that is drinking beautifully right now. Dark purple in color, full in body, enticing nose of black cherry, pencil shavings, and gravel. Tastes of boysenberry, graphite, pepper, and cedar, with a lingering and silky finish with integrated tannins. The round and layered mouth-feel reminds me of Benoit's work at Realm and Fait-Main - comparisons I mean as the highest of compliments. Blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Petite Sirah. 14.1% alcohol. A beautiful wine that has several years left, but it tastes fully integrated now.

3/18/2017 4:12:00 AM - Nice note! If it's drinking great right now, I'm going to put it on deck. And I agree about this holding it's own against Fait Main and Realm and that it's a compliment. Kata has a very unique taste.

3/18/2017 8:20:00 AM - Thanks for the feedback. This was my first bottle of Kata; I had initially been worried the Petite Sirah would make the wine too rustic (i.e., peppery, gamey), but the blend really works - ripe Beckstoffer fruit up front, savory note in back, altogether silky package. In terms of timing, this has years left; that said, I tend to like wine on the younger side, and this really does taste well-integrated, with even just a half hour decant. Hope you enjoy it!
