Friday, October 17, 2014 - Clear, somewhat translucent dark cherry color that turns slightly orange towards the rim. Somewhat restrained nose with aromas of sweet dark cherries, light meaty tones, some inky character and a hint of hot, sun-baked rocks. The wine is somewhat light-bodied on the palate, but with racy acidity and rather pronounced, grippy tannins, giving the wine very rough, robust and quite rustic overall feel and a lot of intensity to the fruit. Flavors of ripe red cherries, fresh tart dark-skinned berries, some sour cherries, a little bit of gravely earth, light smoky and a hint of smoke. Long, spicy and sunny, yet cool finish with flavors of tart dark berries, blackberries and sour cherry bitterness with some herbal character, a hint of peppery spice and quite a bit of tannic roughness. The wine ends on a somewhat astringent, mouth-drying note.

Finally, a wine with good structure and nice, unpolished and rustic character! This is far from a crowdpleaser: there are a lot of angular tannins and a good dose of bright acidity, giving the wine a nice, gritty edge. Terrific focus, intensity and lovely purity of fruit that is all about tart and savory notes, not ripe sweetness. Quite angular wine on its own, but really terrific with food. Just lovely. Good value at 8€ for a 12 cl glass in a restaurant.
