97 Points

Sunday, September 6, 2020 - This dense and layered Cabernet needed about three hours to open up, but it was marvelous once it did. Dark red in color and full in body, the wine offers incredible aromas of black cherry, espresso bean, forest floor, and dried herbs. The flavors are just as intense, with notes of blueberry, graphite, cocoa powder, fresh embers, and peppercorn, with a grainy and layered finish. Blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Petit Verdot. 14.5% alcohol.

This presented as more tightly coiled than many Napa 2012s, but - unlike some of my CT brethren - I think the wine is incredible right now. If you want something more integrated and subtle, I’d wait a few more years. Even with a few rough edges, though, this wine has singular complexity and class, with only good things to come. I am a newcomer to the Abreu wines, but I think Thorevilos is my favorite. 97 for now, with upside in 2022 and later.
