Wednesday, March 2, 2016 - Bright cranberry red in color. On the nose, it’s high-toned and fragrant, with bright red fruit aromas of raspberry and cherry, fresh roses, dried rose petals, a whiff of both sweet and peppery spices, and licorice. I love the profile of xinomavro—always strikes me as a mixture of nebbiolo and syrah, my two favorite red varieties. On the palate, all that youthful freshness is there with ripe juicy red fruit flavors and floral, almost rosewater flavors, but there’s also a surprising depth, with solid tannin and a well-built, well-balanced structure. A hint of stemminess, which doesn’t bother me one bit, and a bone dry finish that leaves behind savory tannin and a cigar-box woodsy/tobacco herbal character. This is just really delicious, high quality, expressive stuff, with great varietal and regional typicity, and excellent value. Can’t hope for more than that.
