85 Points

Thursday, March 9, 2023 - Opened last night. I just don't understand it. This bottle is yet another I have had that completely underwhelms and disappoints. Cork was in good shape, the wine was a strong ruby red, but it shows very little of anything on the nose; almost no fruit at all. Palate wasn't any better. Just flat all the way around. Is it possible this is just closed up tight at ten years of age? Ouch. I am rating this since there is no obvious defect. 5-10-14-6: 85/100.

3/10/2023 4:07:00 PM - Sounds like bottle variation. The 13 should be good. My 14’s (poor vintage) are actually improving.

3/10/2023 5:24:00 PM - Hasta be. First bottle was a 98 and inspired me to stock up; I bought 7 in all. None measured up to the first, most were very good, but a couple were disappointing given my expectations.

9/1/2023 5:28:00 PM - Had a similar experience last night. A bit of cola nose, lovely texture, but muted. I’ve never experienced this with a wine before. 1st of a case. Perfect cork. Decanted ~45 mins. Just flavorless. I’m scratching my head to open another or maybe it’s still in a ‘dumb phase’?

9/2/2023 12:38:00 AM - Skotto: I've had some great bottles of this (98 pts.) and some real disappointing ones (85 pts.) where the wine just did not live up to its lofty reputation (I've seen it described as the Lafite Rothschild of Italy). Hopefully you have at least a few good bottles in your case. Certainly it should last a long time if stored properly. If you do try another bottle in the near future and have the same experience, let the bottle sit overnight in the cellar and see if that makes a difference when you taste it the next day. Good luck!

2/13/2024 6:35:00 AM - Thanks Mickle, my second bottle had a very slow start then began roaring to live after 4.5 hrs in the decanter. I’m betting this is in a dumb phase, exacerbated the low temps in my storage. Once bottles get past the 5 year mark, it’s really difficult to understand progression unless one cellars it from release. Experience tells me that wines I store tend to mature more slowly vs bottles I buy in the shop. I think the wine maker was leaving a clue with a cork as long as a ring finger - I’m doing my best to sit on my remaining bottles another 5+ years.
