94 Points

Thursday, October 5, 2017 - My new benchmark Bordeaux. Nice Cab notes but so well blended I can barely pick out the other varietals. Slight finish of faint black pepper. Color is so light looks like Grenache, did not need more than 30m decant! I’m new to Bordeaux but now I’m beginning to see what all the fuss is about! Nice to drink a bottle of 20+ years.

1/12/2018 10:10:00 AM - Hey Jake, Montrose I've never had but my buddy is threatening to bring a 100 pointer for my 60th bd dinner next month. It sounds like one of the good chateaux. We didn't go there in BDX but we did to Mouton, Margaux and Latour. As our winemaker told us, there are 8000 Chateaux in BDX. About 150 make really good wine, the rest are sheet!

Price unfortunately, is the big sticking point when it comes to BDX. It is getting very hard to find a really good red under $150-$300 bottle, just like in Napa it's getting hard to find a good one under $75-100. I was looking back at the prices at the tasting in Paris in '76 when we won both red and white categories. Our wines were like $8.50-12.00 a bottle and the French were $18.50-27.00 a bottle even back then in the 70's.
