Sunday, December 27, 2020 - Virtual Holiday Wine Tasting (Home): Very dark red plus color with a 6mm transition to clear. Splash decanted, poured into vessels at 2pm and into glasses at 4pm. Drank a glass over 3 hours. This was a quite remarkable for a 38 year old wine. And while this is in a wonderful drinking window presently, there is room for further development as this easily has another 15 years plus left. The nose is impressive with its burst of smoky lead pencil, scorched earth and a wonderfully pure blend of red, black and blue fruits. The nose effuses a mix of cassis, raspberry, boysenberry and cherry fruits with cedarbox and leather. The palate shows a power reflective to the vintage, full and concentrated but impressive for the purity of fruit and overall presence. The complexity of fruit stands out with black and red berries on top of the cherry notes and blue fruit nuances. This has a satiny full bodied texture where the tannins come off as round and integrated, but certainly not indicating that this is ready to slip over the horizon anytimme soon. The pencil, fine tobacco and scorched earth notes come through as well and the finish is impeccable. Just a gorgeous wine. My #2 WOTN, just shaded by the finest of threads by the '94 Dominus. 96(+)pts.
