Saturday, September 2, 2017 - Difficult to describe this as anything less than completely extraordinary!
On opening quite harshly tannic and unappealing.
10 hours slow ox.
Impenetrable dark garnet.
Ultra-complex nose, strong truffle, humus, dark forest floor, leather, rubber, blood, game, charcuterie, black cardamom, cola, tar. Kept changing and evolving, every sniff, something different.
Sweet, lovely palate: dark red fruits, roses, violets, cola, chinotto, Asian spice, gingerbread and Christmas cake, youthful and vibrant, great acidity and still a very tannic wine that may well live forever?
Over several hours resolved into a combination of saline soy with dark cherry and iodine.
1950 is I think considered an average vintage.
