Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - One of the most thoroughly enjoyable wines I have ever experienced; had the opportunity (or misfortune) to consume it on a number of occasions while still in its infancy (2008-2009). During that time, I found it did not suffer much of the famous Vieux Telegraphe "dumb stage," but also that it still had great potential. These notes are based on the sum of those half-dozen tastings. This wine is fairly opaque, dark ruby, and long-legged. Definitely a product of a hot, dry, growing season, leading to healthy, saturated fruit. Apart from what you would expect from a new-school Chateauneuf, this has some particularly saucy plum sauce notes, as well as a bit of nori. These hang out on the fringes of a beautiful fruit core, which is perfectly introduced by a spiced, fragranced, nose. The best feature is its velvety texture and satisfying mouthfeel are not far short of perfection (not equal to the very best Chateauneufs in history, but close). I have set some of this aside to hold and will for a while. Wonderful to pair with a fragrant duck, a thick slice of cote du boeuf, or some hard cheeses, this will probably be remembered among my all-time-favorites.
