This wine had a well-balanced feel with a velvety mouthfeel and nice medium body, but a very simplistic and reductive fruitiness that bordered on jammy. Good - but falling well short of greatness.

I have now sampled this a couple of times. The Esprit de Beaucastel does not have the complexity of its French cousin - but with the simplicity and reduction also comes not having to deal with waiting several hours for the aroma of horsecrap to depart, nor the need for decanting, decanting, and sometimes decanting again, that I enjoy when drinking the grand vin of Chateau de Beaucastel, from whose vineyards this Rhône Ranger from Pasô Rôbles is allegedly cloned. But it's very hard to differentiate, after an aperitif, from the second wine of Beaucastel, the Coudoulet, from the same vintage. All that being said, when judged on its own right and not by comparison to ancestors, this stands up as a flawelssly-conceived and flawlessly-executed wine. The plurality varietal - mourvedre lends a little smoke to the mid palate, and leather to the finish. Overall, the mouthfeel is rich, and the attack is not too harsh. The nose is not memorable - grenache always smells like spring apples to me. Overall, I think this wine is worthy of acquisition and consumption - highly worthy.
